Shopify email marketing guide
Everything to know before you choose a Shopify email app
Shopify email marketing works when three things are in place: an email app that fits your catalogue and budget, automated flows that reach shoppers at the moments they decide to buy, and a consent and sending setup that keeps you inside Canadian law and out of the spam folder. Most stores install an app, send a few discount blasts and stop there. Canada Create™ chooses and configures the right Shopify email app, writes and designs the flows, adds SMS where it makes sense, and manages the program on an ongoing basis for ecommerce brands across Canada and the United States.
This guide is written for Shopify store owners and ecommerce managers who want to understand how the pieces fit before they spend money. It covers how the apps differ, what Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation means for your list, which flows to build first, how deliverability works, what the program costs and how to judge whether it is paying back. If you would rather hand the whole thing over, you can get a proposal in one business day.
How Shopify email marketing works
Shopify email marketing is the practice of sending permission-based email, and often SMS, to people who have shopped or signed up on your Shopify store, using an app that reads your store data. What separates it from a generic newsletter is that data. Your email app knows who bought, what they bought, when they last visited, what they left in the checkout and whether they gave consent. Every good message you send is built on that information.
It helps to think of the program in three layers. When a store is underperforming, the problem almost always sits in one of them.
The platform layer
The platform layer is the email app that sends your messages. It might be Shopify’s own tool or a dedicated ecommerce email platform connected through the Shopify App Store. The app decides what you can do: how finely you can segment, which triggers are available, how testing works and how much each send costs. Picking the wrong app does not stop you sending email, but it caps how far the program can grow.
The data layer
The data layer is the customer, order and browsing information Shopify passes to your email app. Customer records, order history, product and collection data, consent status and on-site behaviour all flow through this connection. When the sync is set up badly, segments fill with the wrong people, product blocks show out-of-stock items and flows fire twice. Most of the silent damage in Shopify email marketing happens here.
The message layer
The message layer is what shoppers actually see: automated flows and scheduled campaigns. Flows are triggered by behaviour, such as signing up, abandoning a checkout or placing a first order, and they run every day without anyone pressing send. Campaigns are the one-off sends you schedule, such as a new collection, a seasonal sale or a story about how a product is made. Healthy ecommerce email marketing needs both. Flows catch shoppers at predictable moments, and campaigns keep the rest of the list warm.
Choosing between Shopify email apps
There are dozens of Shopify email apps, and most comparison articles rank them by feature count. A more useful way to choose is by the job you need the app to do, the size of your list and who will run it day to day. The table below compares the main options store owners actually weigh.
| Option | Best fit | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Messaging (Shopify’s built-in email tool) | New and smaller stores, simple catalogues, lean teams | Lives inside the Shopify admin, uses your store data and branding, free to install | Fewer advanced segmentation, testing and reporting options than dedicated platforms |
| Dedicated ecommerce email and SMS platforms, for example Klaviyo or Omnisend | Growing stores with repeat buyers, larger lists and several product lines | Deep Shopify data sync, behaviour-based segments, email and SMS in one place, strong flow builders | Subscription cost rises with list size; the tool rewards someone who runs it properly |
| General newsletter tools, for example Mailchimp or MailerLite | Content-led brands, stores with a blog or community focus | Familiar editors, good for storytelling newsletters | Ecommerce events and product data can be thinner, depending on the integration |
| SMS-focused Shopify apps, for example Yotpo SMS & Email (formerly SMSBump) | Brands with heavy mobile traffic and time-sensitive offers | Text-specific opt in tools, keyword sign-ups, quiet hours | A second system to manage if email lives elsewhere; per-message costs |
What is the best email app for Shopify?
The best email app for Shopify is the one that matches your list size, your product complexity and the time your team can give it. A store with a few hundred customers and one product line usually does well on Shopify’s own tool. A store with repeat purchase behaviour, several collections and a list in the tens of thousands usually needs a dedicated platform to segment and test properly. We recommend an app only after looking at your order data, not before. Canada Create™ has no reason to push one vendor, so the recommendation follows your numbers.
Does Shopify have its own email platform?
Yes. Shopify’s own email tool, first released as Shopify Email, now sits inside Shopify Messaging, which brings email, SMS and other channels into the Shopify admin. It uses your store’s logo, colours and products, pulls customer segments directly from Shopify and handles basic automations such as welcome and abandoned checkout messages. For many new stores, it is the right place to start.
When switching apps makes sense
Switching apps makes sense when your current tool cannot build the segments or flows your data calls for, when costs have climbed past what the features justify, or when email and SMS live in two systems that do not talk to each other. A switch is a migration, not a reinstall. Consent status, suppression lists, unsubscribes and historical engagement all need to move with the list, and flows should be rebuilt and tested before the old ones are switched off. Losing an unsubscribe list during a migration is one of the quickest ways to create a compliance problem.
Shopify SMS consent, email opt in and CASL
Consent is where Canadian stores differ most from the US-centred advice that dominates search results. Canada has one of the stricter anti-spam regimes in the world, and it applies to email and text messages alike. The notes below are general information to help you ask the right questions; they are not legal advice, and your lawyer should confirm how the rules apply to your store.
What CASL requires
Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation, known as CASL, applies to commercial electronic messages sent to or from computers and devices in Canada, including email and SMS. In broad terms, it requires three things: consent to send, clear identification of who is sending, and a working unsubscribe mechanism. Unsubscribe requests must be honoured within ten business days. Consent can be express, where someone actively agrees, or implied in certain situations. A purchase typically creates implied consent for two years, and an inquiry typically creates it for six months. Express consent does not expire until someone withdraws it, which is why growing an express opt in list is worth the effort.
How Shopify records consent
Shopify stores email marketing consent and SMS marketing consent as separate fields on each customer record. A shopper who ticks the email box at checkout has not agreed to texts, and the reverse is also true. Your email app reads those fields, so it matters where sign-ups come from: checkout, pop-ups, footer forms, account creation and imports. Imported lists are the usual weak point. If you cannot show when and how a contact agreed, that contact should not be treated as express consent.
Shopify SMS opt in done properly
A valid Shopify SMS opt in names your brand, explains what kind of messages will follow and how often, and tells people how to stop. The checkbox must not be pre-ticked. The first text should confirm the subscription and include opt out instructions, such as replying STOP. Mobile carriers also apply their own rules on content and sender registration, so SMS apps handle part of that process for you. Shopify SMS marketing consent and email consent should be collected separately and worded separately.
Shopify SMS consent for US subscribers
US subscribers fall under different rules from Canadian ones. Email to US recipients is governed mainly by CAN-SPAM, which focuses on accurate headers, identification and unsubscribes. Text messages to US numbers carry stricter consent requirements. If you sell into both countries, your forms and flows should handle both, and your app should know which country each subscriber is in. Stores serving Quebec should also review how Quebec’s privacy law affects the personal information they collect.
How ecommerce email marketing on Shopify has changed
Ecommerce email marketing started as the monthly newsletter: one message, one list, one discount code. As Shopify grew, apps began to read store events, and automated abandoned checkout emails became standard. Dedicated platforms then pulled in full order history and browsing behaviour, which made segments based on what people actually do possible. Two more recent changes shape how programs are run today.
Why open rates stopped telling the truth
Apple Mail Privacy Protection, introduced in 2021, loads email images in the background for many Apple Mail users, which makes those messages register as opened whether or not a person read them. Open rates became inflated and unreliable as a success measure. Clicks, placed orders and revenue per recipient are now the numbers that matter. Subject line tests judged only on opens can pick the wrong winner.
Why sender rules became stricter
Since February 2024, Gmail and Yahoo have required bulk senders to authenticate their domains, offer one-click unsubscribe and keep spam complaint rates below 0.3 percent. Stores that send from an unauthenticated address or mail people who never engage now see messages filtered or rejected. Deliverability used to be a technical footnote. It is now part of the core setup, which is why we cover it in its own chapter below.
The automated flows to build first
Flows are the backbone of Shopify email marketing because they run every day and reach people at moments of real intent. We build them in order of how close each moment sits to a purchase, and we write every message for your brand rather than using stock templates with your logo swapped in.
Shopify welcome email series
A Shopify welcome email is the first message a new subscriber receives, sent while their interest in your brand is at its peak. A good welcome series runs over several messages. It delivers any promised offer right away, explains what makes your products different, answers the objections your customer service team hears most, and shows the best sellers for that visitor’s interest. The welcome series is where a new subscriber decides whether your emails are worth opening. We split it for people who have already bought and people who have not, so buyers are not shown a first-order discount they cannot use.
Abandoned checkout and abandoned cart
Shopify’s abandoned checkout emails trigger when a shopper enters contact details at checkout and leaves without paying. Because the shopper has already chosen products and started paying, this is usually the highest-intent flow you run. We write it as help first and incentive second: a reminder, an answer to common concerns such as shipping times, duties or returns, and only then an offer if your margins support one. Abandoned cart and browse abandonment flows go further up the funnel and need your app’s on-site tracking to identify the visitor.
Post-purchase and review requests
Post-purchase flows turn a first order into a second one. Order confirmations and shipping updates are transactional notifications that Shopify sends; the marketing sequence runs alongside them with care instructions, how-to content, cross-sells chosen from real purchase patterns and a review request timed to arrive after delivery. Reviews collected here feed your product pages and, through your Google presence, your wider visibility.
Replenishment, back in stock and winback
Replenishment flows remind customers to reorder consumable products at the point they are likely to run out, which we estimate from your own order intervals. Back in stock flows notify people who asked to hear when a sold-out item returns. Winback flows reach customers who have not ordered for longer than your typical buying cycle, with a clear reason to come back. Each of these uses your data rather than a fixed calendar.
Build order
- First: welcome series, abandoned checkout, post-purchase.
- Second: browse and cart abandonment, back in stock, review requests.
- Third: replenishment, winback, VIP and birthday flows, and sunset flows that clean out people who no longer engage.
Campaigns and a newsletter for Shopify that people read
Campaigns are the scheduled sends that give your list a reason to stay subscribed. A newsletter for Shopify should sound like your brand talking to a customer, not like a flyer. The mix we plan includes launches, restocks, seasonal edits, founder stories, product education and customer photos, with promotions placed where they will do the most good rather than in every send.
What is the 80/20 rule in email marketing?
The 80/20 rule in email marketing most often means that about 80 percent of your messages should give value, such as education, stories and useful content, and about 20 percent should sell directly. Some marketers use it in the Pareto sense instead, pointing out that a small share of subscribers usually produces most of the revenue. Both readings are useful. The first keeps your list from tuning out, and the second is why engaged segments get more sends than the rest.
What is the 3-3-3 rule in marketing?
There is no single agreed definition of the 3-3-3 rule; marketers use the name for several different ideas. The version we apply to campaigns is simple: the subject line and preview text must earn attention within three seconds, the email should carry no more than three core points, and a reader should reach checkout in three clicks or fewer. It is a planning check, not a law.
What are the 5 T’s of email marketing?
The 5 T’s are a checklist that different writers describe in different ways. The version we plan with is targeting, timing, tone, testing and tracking: who receives the message, when it lands, how it sounds, what you are testing in it and how you will measure the result. If a campaign brief cannot answer all five, it is not ready to send.
How often to send campaigns
Campaign frequency should follow engagement, not a fixed calendar. Recent buyers and frequent clickers can receive more messages than people who have not opened or clicked in months. We build engagement tiers so that your most active subscribers hear about every launch, while quieter ones receive only your strongest sends. This protects deliverability and keeps unsubscribe rates down without shrinking revenue.
Shopify SMS marketing: when texting earns its place
Shopify SMS marketing works well for short, time-sensitive messages sent to people who asked for them. It works badly as a copy of your email calendar. Text messages are personal and interruptive, and every send has a direct cost, so each one needs a reason.
Shopify SMS messaging versus email
SMS suits limited drops, restocks of popular items, early access for VIPs, delivery-day reminders and abandoned checkout nudges for shoppers who opted in to texts. Email suits storytelling, product education, visual collections and longer offers. We plan both channels together so a subscriber never receives the same message twice in an hour. Where someone is on both lists, SMS carries the urgent part and email carries the detail.
SMSBump and other Shopify SMS marketing apps
SMSBump, now part of Yotpo SMS & Email, is one of several Shopify SMS marketing apps; several dedicated email platforms also include SMS. The right choice depends on whether you want email and SMS in one system, whether the app supports Canadian phone numbers and sender rules, and how it records consent. Running two separate systems is workable, but only if suppression and consent sync between them.
What SMS costs to run
SMS is billed per message by the app you use, and longer messages or picture messages usually count as more than one message. Costs also vary by country. That is why SMS lists are kept smaller and more deliberate than email lists, and why we measure SMS on revenue per message sent, not on list size.
Shopify email sending and deliverability
Deliverability is whether your emails reach the inbox. It depends on your domain setup, your sending habits and how subscribers respond. A well-written email that lands in spam earns nothing, so this chapter covers the technical protocol we follow for every store.
What email should I use for Shopify?
You should send from an address on your own domain, such as hello@yourbrand.ca, not from a free Gmail, Outlook or Yahoo address. Free providers publish policies that cause mail sent through third-party platforms under their domains to fail authentication checks. A branded address also builds recognition in the inbox. Use a sender name customers know, and make sure replies reach a real inbox that someone checks.
Authenticating your sending domain
Domain authentication proves to mailbox providers that your email app is allowed to send for your brand. It uses three DNS records: SPF lists the services permitted to send, DKIM adds a cryptographic signature to each message, and DMARC tells receiving servers what to do when a message fails and sends you reports. These records live wherever your domain’s DNS is managed, which is often your registrar or your website hosting provider. Shopify and the main email apps walk you through their required records; we add them, check alignment and move DMARC from monitoring to enforcement once the reports are clean.
Warming a new sending setup
A new domain, a new app or a long-dormant list should be warmed rather than blasted. We start by sending to your most engaged subscribers and increase volume over several weeks as inbox placement holds. Jumping straight to your full list from a new setup is a common cause of sudden spam filtering.
List hygiene and sunset flows
List hygiene means removing addresses that bounce and reducing sends to people who no longer engage. Sunset flows give inactive subscribers a last chance to stay and then stop mailing them. A smaller, engaged list almost always delivers better than a large, stale one, and it usually lowers your platform bill too.
What is the real Shopify email?
Genuine Shopify account emails come from Shopify’s own domains and match notices you can see when you log in to your Shopify admin directly. Store owners regularly receive phishing messages that imitate Shopify, often warning of a suspended store or failed payment. If an email asks you to log in or pay, open your admin in a new tab instead of clicking the link. For your customers, the same principle applies: consistent sender names and authenticated domains help them trust your real emails.
Segments, data and tracking
Good segmentation means each subscriber gets the messages most relevant to them. Shopify gives your email app a rich base to work from, and the app adds its own engagement and browsing data.
Segments worth building
The segments we build first are based on behaviour: first-time buyers, repeat buyers, high-value customers, people who browse but have not bought, customers overdue for their usual reorder and subscribers who have not clicked in a set period. Product and collection interest adds another layer, so that a customer who only buys one category does not hear mainly about another. We also separate wholesale or trade customers where a store has them, and for B2B buyers we can connect enquiries into CS+, Canada Create™’s CRM, so sales follow-up does not get lost.
Why the numbers never quite match
Your email app, Shopify and Google Analytics 4 will usually report different revenue for the same campaign. Email apps count orders within an attribution window after an open or click, while Google Analytics uses its own attribution rules and depends on tagged links. Neither is wrong; they answer different questions. We tag every link with consistent UTM parameters, report the app’s figures and the analytics figures side by side, and explain the gap rather than hiding it.
Metrics we report
- Revenue per recipient for each flow and campaign.
- Placed order rate and click rate, rather than open rate.
- Unsubscribe and spam complaint rates, watched against mailbox provider limits.
- List growth by source, including pop-ups, checkout and paid traffic.
- Share of store revenue from email and SMS, tracked over time.

What Shopify email marketing costs, and how to judge the return
The cost of Shopify email marketing comes from several separate lines, and mixing them up is how store owners end up surprised by a bill. We price setup, monthly management and third-party fees separately so you can see exactly where the money goes.
Are Shopify emails free?
Shopify’s built-in email tool is free to install and includes a monthly allowance of free emails, after which sending is billed by volume. SMS is always paid per message. Dedicated platforms charge a subscription that rises with the number of contacts or sends. Because vendors change their pricing, check the current rates in your Shopify admin or on each app’s pricing page before you budget.
How much does Shopify email marketing cost?
What you spend depends on your list size, the app you choose, how many flows need building, how many campaigns you send and whether SMS is part of the plan. The table below shows the cost lines we separate in every proposal.
| Cost line | What it covers | What moves the price | Who you pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-time setup | Audit, app selection or migration, domain authentication, forms, core flows, templates | Number of flows, catalogue complexity, migration from another app, bilingual versions | Canada Create™ |
| Monthly management | Campaign planning, writing, design, sending, testing, flow optimization, reporting | Number of campaigns per month, segments, channels, languages | Canada Create™ |
| Email platform subscription | The email app itself | Contacts, send volume, plan features | The app vendor |
| SMS sending | Per-message charges for texts and picture messages | Message length, volume, destination country | The app vendor |
| Paid list growth | Ads that drive sign-ups and first orders | Your ad budget and targeting | Google, Meta or other ad platforms |
We do not publish a flat package price for email because two stores with the same list size can need very different amounts of work. Send us your store and current setup and we will quote setup and management separately, with third-party fees listed so you can see them before you commit.
How to judge the return
Judge email and SMS on contribution margin, not attributed revenue. A flow that brings in sales with a heavy discount can look strong in the app and still lose money. We compare revenue per recipient over time, watch whether discounting is training customers to wait for offers, and where your list is large enough, use holdout groups to see how many orders the messages really added. The goal is profitable repeat purchases, not the biggest number on a dashboard.
How Canada Create™ runs your program
Canada Create™ has worked with businesses across Canada and the United States since 2008, and we are a BBB Accredited Business with an A+ rating. Our email work follows the same sequence every time, so nothing important is skipped.
Audit
The audit reviews your current app, list sources, consent records, flows, templates, deliverability records and past results. You receive a plain-language summary of what is working, what is missing and what is putting your list at risk.
Build
The build phase covers app setup or migration, domain authentication, sign-up forms and pop-ups, core flows and a branded template system. Every message is written for your customers and checked on mobile before it goes live.
Manage and report
Monthly management covers the campaign calendar, writing, design, segmentation, testing and optimization of existing flows. You get a monthly report built on the metrics above, and our team is reachable through our 24/7* toll-free line. We keep your business by showing results.
How the playbook changes by product type
Ecommerce email marketing is not one playbook. The same flows exist in every store, but their timing, content and offers change with what you sell.
Fashion and apparel
Fashion stores run on newness, so launch campaigns, early access and size-specific back in stock alerts carry more weight. Fit guidance and return policy answers belong in abandoned checkout messages.
Beauty and skincare
Beauty brands depend on education and reorders. Routines, ingredient explanations and replenishment timing drive repeat purchases. Product claims must stay within what your labels and regulators allow, and we write to that standard.
Food, beverage and consumables
Consumable products suit subscriptions and replenishment flows. Shipping cut-off dates, freshness and delivery windows matter more here than almost anywhere else.
Home, furniture and high-ticket goods
High-ticket purchases have long consideration periods. Flows run longer, lean on reviews, care information and delivery details, and often hand serious buyers to a person rather than pushing another discount.
Wholesale and trade buyers
Stores that also sell wholesale need separate segments and messaging for trade accounts, with reorder reminders and new line sheets rather than consumer promotions.
Email inside the rest of your store’s marketing
Email works best when the rest of your marketing feeds it. Traffic from SEO and Google Ads becomes subscribers through well-placed sign-up forms, and those subscribers become repeat customers through flows. Stores with a physical showroom can pair email with local SEO so nearby shoppers find the store and join the list in person.
Your store itself matters too. If product pages load slowly or checkout is confusing, email only sends more people into the same problem. Canada Create™ also handles ecommerce website development, web design and WordPress development for brands that run content hubs alongside their Shopify stores, so fixes can happen in one place.
Agency, freelancer or in-house: choosing who runs it
There are three common ways to run Shopify email marketing, and each fits a different stage.
- In-house: works when you have a marketer with time, copywriting skill and technical comfort with DNS, segmentation and testing. It gives you the closest control over voice.
- Freelancer: works well for a defined project such as building flows or migrating apps, but ongoing management depends on one person’s availability.
- Agency: suits stores that want strategy, writing, design, deliverability and reporting from one team with backup coverage, and no need to hire.
Many stores combine them: an agency builds and manages the system, while an in-house person supplies product news and customer stories. We are happy to work that way.
Is Shopify still worth it in 2026?
Shopify remains a strong choice for most growing ecommerce brands because of its checkout, its app ecosystem and how deeply email and SMS apps connect to it. Whether it is right for your business depends on your catalogue, your sales channels and your budget for apps and fees. If you are weighing a platform change, talk to us before you move your list, because a migration changes how consent and customer data are stored.

How we build your Shopify email program
Every store goes through the same five stages, so consent, deliverability and flows are right before we start sending campaigns.
- Audit Week 1
We review your email app, list sources, consent records, flows, templates, domain authentication and past results, then summarize what works and what puts your list at risk.
- Plan Week 1 to 2
We recommend an app, map the flows to build first, define segments and agree the campaign calendar and reporting measures with you.
- Build Week 2 to 5
We set up or migrate the app, authenticate your domain, add sign-up forms and write, design and test the welcome, checkout and post-purchase flows.
- Launch and warm up Week 4 to 8
Flows go live, and campaign volume grows gradually from your most engaged subscribers so inbox placement holds.
- Manage and report Monthly
We plan, write, design and send campaigns, test and improve flows, and send a monthly report built on revenue per recipient and placed orders.

Shopify email marketing questions
What is the best email app for Shopify?
The best email app for Shopify is the one that fits your list size, product range and the time your team can give it. Smaller stores often do well on Shopify's own tool, while stores with repeat buyers and larger lists usually need a dedicated platform. We recommend an app after reviewing your order data.
Does Shopify have its own email marketing platform?
Yes. Shopify's own email tool, first released as Shopify Email, is now part of Shopify Messaging inside the Shopify admin. It uses your store's branding and customer data and handles basic automations.
Are Shopify emails free?
Shopify's built-in email tool is free to install and includes a monthly allowance of free emails, after which sending is billed by volume. SMS is paid per message. Check current rates in your Shopify admin, as vendors change pricing.
How much does Shopify email marketing cost?
Cost depends on list size, the app you choose, the number of flows and campaigns and whether SMS is included. We quote one-time setup and monthly management separately, and list app and SMS fees so you see every cost before you commit.
Do I need consent to email my Shopify customers in Canada?
Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation requires consent, sender identification and a working unsubscribe for commercial email and texts. A purchase typically creates implied consent for a limited time, while express consent lasts until withdrawn. This is general information, so confirm your approach with your lawyer.
How do I get Shopify SMS opt in and consent right?
Collect SMS consent separately from email consent with an unticked box that names your brand, explains what messages to expect and how to stop. Shopify stores the two consents in separate fields, and your first text should confirm the subscription and explain how to opt out.
What email address should I use for Shopify?
Send from an address on your own domain, such as hello@yourbrand.ca, and authenticate it with SPF, DKIM and DMARC. Free Gmail, Outlook or Yahoo addresses are likely to fail authentication when sent through an email app.
What is the 80/20 rule in email marketing?
It usually means about 80 percent of your messages give value, such as education and stories, and about 20 percent sell directly. Some marketers use it in the Pareto sense, where a small share of subscribers produces most of the revenue.
Is Shopify still worth it in 2026?
For most growing ecommerce brands Shopify remains a strong choice because of its checkout, its app ecosystem and how closely email and SMS apps connect to it. The right answer depends on your catalogue, channels and budget, so talk to us before moving your list to another platform.

What stores miss without a managed email program
Without working flows, shoppers who abandon checkout, first-time buyers and lapsed customers hear nothing at the moments they are most likely to buy. Unauthenticated domains and stale lists push messages into spam, and missing consent records create risk under Canadian anti-spam rules.
