Mobile app design
Mobile app design and UX that people keep using
A mobile app design company in Canada that researches the job, wireframes and tests the flow with real users, then designs the interface for iPhone and Android before a line of code is written.
Canada Create™ designs the user experience and interface of new and existing apps, from research and prototypes to a complete design system, and builds the app when you want one team for both.

What is included in mobile app design
Each project is scoped to your app, but these are the building blocks we plan, design and hand over.
- User researchInterviews, task observation and competitor review that define the job the app must do.
- User journeys and scopeThe flows that matter and a first release that solves the most valuable problem completely.
- WireframesEvery screen in structure first, so decisions stay on flow and words.
- Clickable prototype and testingReal users trying the app on their own phone, with rounds of fixes before code.
- UI designBrand, typography, colour, icons and motion applied to iPhone and Android patterns.
- Onboarding and notificationsFirst-minute experience, permission timing and notifications designed as a service.
- AccessibilityContrast, text scaling, screen readers and touch targets designed in from the start.
- Design system and handoffComponents, states, specifications and assets developers build from directly.
Mobile app design cost
Cost depends on screens and roles, research and testing scope, platforms, the state of your brand and whether a full design system is needed. We separate research, UX, UI and the system so you see where the investment goes.

App designers
App designers who test before they polish
Executive summary: Most apps are deleted within days of being installed, and the reason is almost always design: the first screen did not make the value obvious, the next step was unclear, or the app asked for too much before it gave anything back. Canada Create™ has designed apps, websites and the marketing behind them since 2008 for businesses across Canada and the United States. This page explains what mobile app design covers, how UX research, wireframes and prototypes save money before development, how we design for iPhone and Android rules, what an app design company should deliver, what drives the cost, and how to choose a mobile app design agency.
What mobile app design covers
App design is two disciplines that have to agree. User experience design (UX) decides what the app does, in what order, and how a person gets from opening it to the result they wanted: the flows, the information on each screen, the words, the errors and the empty states. User interface design (UI) decides how that looks and feels: layout, typography, colour, icons, motion and the fit with your brand and with the conventions of each platform. A beautiful app with a confusing flow fails, and a logical app that looks dated does not get trusted, so both are designed together and tested with real people before the build.
Research before wireframes
Good app design starts with the people who will use the app and the job they need done. We interview customers or staff, watch how they do the task today, review competing and comparable apps, and map the moments where an app would remove friction. The output is a short set of user journeys and a first-release scope that solves the most valuable problem completely rather than many problems partially. This is where most of the eventual cost of an app is decided, because every screen that does not earn its place here will be designed, built, tested and maintained later.
Wireframes, prototypes and testing
Wireframes lay out every screen in grey boxes so the conversation stays on structure and words rather than colour. A clickable prototype then connects the screens so a real customer or staff member can try the app on their own phone, and we watch where they hesitate, tap the wrong thing or give up. Two or three rounds of testing at this stage typically remove problems that would have cost weeks to fix in code. When the prototype works, the UI design applies your brand and the platform rules, and the design system that results is what developers build from and what future features are designed against.
Designing for iPhone and Android
Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines and Google’s Material Design differ in navigation, gestures, typography and controls, and users notice when an app feels foreign on their phone. We design for both platforms from one system, keeping the brand consistent while respecting each platform’s patterns, and we design for the realities of small screens: one-handed use, bright sunlight, interrupted sessions, slow connections and accessibility settings such as larger text and screen readers. Accessibility is part of the design rather than a later audit, both because it is right and because store guidelines and Canadian accessibility rules increasingly expect it.
Onboarding, notifications and retention
The first minute decides whether an app is kept. Onboarding is designed to get a new user to the first valuable result before asking for an account, permissions or payment details, and to ask for each of those at the moment the user understands why. Notifications are designed as a service to the user rather than a marketing channel, because an app that interrupts gets muted or deleted. Empty states, errors and loading are designed with the same care as the main screens, because that is where users decide whether the app is finished.
Redesigning an existing app
Many app design projects start with an app that exists but underperforms: installs that do not become active users, features nobody finds, reviews that mention confusion, or a look that no longer matches the brand. We audit the current app against analytics and reviews, interview users, and redesign in stages so the app keeps working for the people who rely on it, with the riskiest screens tested as prototypes before they change in the store.
Handoff to development
Design is only useful when developers can build it exactly. We deliver a design system with components, spacing, colour and type scales, every screen in every state, interaction specifications and exported assets, in files your developers or our mobile app development team work from directly. When Canada Create™ builds the app, design and development sit in the same team, so questions are answered in hours and the built app matches the approved design. When another team builds it, we stay available to review the build against the design.
What drives mobile app design cost
Every design project is quoted in writing after a discovery call. The drivers are the number of screens and user roles, whether research and testing with real users are in scope, how many rounds of prototype testing the risk justifies, whether the app needs one platform or two, the state of your existing brand, and whether a full design system or a lighter set of screens is needed. A proposal separates research, UX, UI and the design system so you can see where the investment goes.
How to choose a mobile app design agency
Ask to use apps the agency designed, on your phone, and ask what changed after launch because of user data. Ask who does the research and design and whether they have designed for both platforms. Ask how testing with real users is done and how many rounds are included. Ask what the handoff contains and whether the agency can also build the app. An agency that answers with specifics, and shows you prototypes rather than only finished screenshots, is one that designs for use rather than for a portfolio.

Mobile app design questions
What is the difference between UX and UI design for an app?
UX design decides what the app does, in what order and how a person reaches the result they wanted: flows, screen content, words, errors and empty states. UI design decides how it looks and feels: layout, typography, colour, icons and motion. Both are designed together and tested with real users.
How much does it cost to design an app?
It depends on the number of screens and roles, whether research and user testing are in scope, the platforms, the state of your brand and whether a full design system is needed. We quote in writing after a discovery call and separate research, UX, UI and the design system.
How long does mobile app design take?
A prototype and validation project typically takes three to five weeks. Full design for a new app on both platforms typically takes six to ten weeks, depending on the number of screens and rounds of testing.
Do you design for both iPhone and Android?
Yes. We design one brand system that respects Apple and Google conventions in navigation, gestures, typography and controls, so the app feels native on each phone.
Can you design the app and also build it?
Yes. When Canada Create™ builds the app, design and development sit in the same team. When another team builds it, we deliver a complete design system and stay available to review the build.
Can you redesign an app that already exists?
Yes. We audit analytics and reviews, interview users and redesign in stages with tested prototypes so the app keeps working for the people who rely on it.
Do you test the design with real users?
Yes. A clickable prototype is tried by real customers or staff on their own phones, and rounds of fixes happen before code, where changes are fastest and least expensive.
Is accessibility part of app design?
Yes. Contrast, text scaling, screen-reader labels, touch targets and motion settings are designed in from the start, which also helps with store guidelines and Canadian accessibility expectations.

An app that nobody uses costs more than an app that was never built
Most failed apps are not failed code. They were built without a clear job, launched without a plan to reach users and left without updates. We scope the first release around one measurable outcome, connect the app to your existing systems and market it after launch, so the investment keeps paying.
