Marketing a law firm in Canada comes down to three jobs: be found when someone searches for help, earn trust in the first minute on your website, and make it easy to book a consultation. The channels that do this best change by practice area. A personal injury firm lives on search and intake speed. A family law firm wins on trust and reviews. A corporate firm grows through referrals and expertise content. This playbook shows which channels fit each practice, what the Law Society rules mean for your marketing, and where to put your budget first.
Start with how clients search for your practice
Clients rarely search for “law firm”. They search for the problem: “family lawyer near me”, “wrongful dismissal lawyer”, “real estate lawyer for closing”. Search demand across practice areas in Canada is very uneven, and so is the cost of a click. Cost per click (CPC) is shown in US dollars as Google reports it.
| Search | Monthly searches in Canada | Average CPC (USD) | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| family lawyer | 18,100 | 14.27 | Largest legal demand; trust and reviews decide the click |
| paralegal | 14,800 | 8.12 | Strong demand for lower cost legal help |
| personal injury lawyer | 9,900 | 67.39 | Highest value files and the most expensive clicks |
| employment lawyer | 9,900 | 11.47 | High competition, strong content opportunity |
| divorce lawyer | 9,900 | 14.18 | Overlaps with family law searches |
| immigration lawyer | 8,100 | 10.85 | Multilingual and newcomer audiences |
| real estate lawyer | 8,100 | 10.95 | Volume practice driven by referrals and fixed fees |
| criminal lawyer | 5,400 | 44.77 | Urgent searches, often after hours |
| corporate lawyer | 2,400 | 17.48 | Smaller demand, longer decision cycle |
| long term disability lawyer | 140 (as “ltd lawyer”) | 98.47 | Small volume, very high value per file |
We plan and run law firm marketing across SEO, Google Ads and websites, within Law Society advertising rules.
Two lessons come out of this data. High CPC practices (personal injury, criminal, disability) need tight Google Ads management and fast intake, or the budget disappears. High volume, lower CPC practices (family, real estate, immigration) reward local SEO, reviews and helpful content, because organic visibility compounds over time.
The channels that work for law firms
Local SEO and Google Business Profile
Most legal searches show a map pack before the regular results. A complete Google Business Profile with the right primary category, practice area services, office hours, photos and a steady flow of genuine reviews is the cheapest lead source most firms have. Our local citations guide covers the listings that support it.
SEO for practice area pages
Each practice area needs its own page that answers the client’s real questions: how the process works, how fees work, how long it takes and what to bring to the first meeting. Thin pages that list ten practice areas in one paragraph do not rank. See SEO for lawyers for how we structure them.
Google Ads
Ads put you at the top for urgent searches today, while SEO builds. They only pay off with exact match targeting, negative keywords, call tracking and someone answering the phone. Our Google Ads for lawyers service measures campaigns on booked consultations, not clicks. For CPC by practice area, read Google Ads for lawyers: cost per click by practice area.
Google Local Services Ads
Local Services Ads charge per lead rather than per click and appear above regular ads for many legal categories. Since October 2025 the trust badge is called Google Verified. See our guide to Local Services Ads in Canada.
Your website
Your site has to answer three questions fast: do you handle my problem, can I trust you, and how do I talk to someone. Clear practice pages, lawyer bios with credentials, fee information where you can give it, and a booking or callback form on every page do most of the work. Read what clients look for on a law firm website and see our law firm website design.
Intake and follow up
Marketing fails when calls go to voicemail. Many firms lose more files to slow intake than to weak ads. A CRM for law firms, after hours answering and same day follow up turn the same marketing budget into more retained clients. An AI receptionist can capture details after hours while you decide who calls back.
Referrals and reputation
Referrals from past clients, other lawyers, accountants, realtors and physicians still drive much of the work in solicitor practices. Make referrals easy: a clear page for referring professionals, fast acknowledgement and a thank you process that respects the Law Society’s referral fee rules.

Stay inside the Law Society rules
Every province’s Law Society requires marketing to be truthful, accurate and verifiable, and not misleading. In Ontario, the rules on marketing sit in Section 4.2 of the Rules of Professional Conduct, and they restrict things like unverifiable awards, claims of superiority over other lawyers and misleading references to past results. Only certified specialists can call themselves specialists. Read our full guide to lawyer advertising rules in Canada before you launch a campaign, and check the current rule text with your own Law Society.
Where to start if your budget is limited
- Fix your Google Business Profile and ask every satisfied client for a review, within your Law Society’s rules.
- Build one strong page for your most profitable practice area and the cities you serve.
- Track every call and form so you know which source brings retained files.
- Add Google Ads on a narrow set of high intent searches once intake is ready to answer fast.
- Publish one genuinely useful guide a month on the questions clients ask in consultations.
If you would rather have this planned and run for you, see our law firm marketing services or the full list of industries we serve. We also help firms put AI to work on intake and document workflows.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best way to market a law firm in Canada?
Combine local SEO and a complete Google Business Profile with strong practice area pages, fast intake and, for urgent practice areas, Google Ads. The right mix depends on your practice.
How much should a law firm spend on marketing?
Start from the value of a retained file and your close rate, then fund the channels that reach your clients. We scope and quote every program in writing.
Which practice areas have the most expensive Google Ads clicks?
In our October 2026 data for Canada, personal injury, long term disability and criminal defence searches had the highest average cost per click.
Is SEO worth it for lawyers?
Yes, for most practices. Organic rankings and map pack visibility keep bringing enquiries after the work is done, unlike ads that stop when spending stops.
Can lawyers use client testimonials?
Rules vary by province and change over time. Ontario restricts misleading or unverifiable content, so check the current Law Society rules before using any client statement.
Can I call myself a specialist?
In Ontario only lawyers certified by the Law Society as specialists may use that title. Other provinces have similar limits.
Do Google Local Services Ads work for law firms?
They can, especially for family, immigration and personal injury. You pay per lead, and Google screens the firm before ads run.
What should a law firm website include?
Clear practice area pages, lawyer bios with credentials, fee information where possible and an easy way to book a consultation on every page.
How do I get more Google reviews for my law firm?
Ask every satisfied client at the end of the matter with a direct link, and reply to every review professionally and without disclosing confidential details.
How long does law firm SEO take?
Most firms see clearer results after six to twelve months, depending on competition in their city and practice area.
