How much does a click cost for a law firm in Canada? It depends heavily on the practice area. In our October 2026 pull of Google Ads keyword data for Canada, average cost per click (CPC) ranged from under US$2 for notary searches to almost US$98 for long term disability lawyer searches. This page publishes that data by practice area, explains why the gaps are so large and shows how to work out what a click is worth to your own firm.

We run law firm Google Ads measured on calls, forms and booked consultations.
How to read this table: Volumes are monthly averages over the last twelve months. CPC is Google’s historical average in US dollars, so what you pay in Canadian dollars will be higher at current exchange rates. Your real CPC also depends on your city, ad quality, bidding strategy and competitors, so treat these as a guide, not a quote.
Why injury and criminal clicks cost so much
- Value per file: injury and disability files can be worth far more than a typical family or real estate matter, so firms can afford to bid more.
- Urgency: criminal and impaired driving clients call quickly, so the first firm they reach often gets the file.
- Few searches, many bidders: narrow searches like “dog bite lawyer” have small volumes but attract the same injury firms, which pushes prices up.
What a click is worth to your firm
Instead of asking whether a CPC is “too high”, work out your break even cost per click from your own numbers:
- Average fee per retained file (from your billing records).
- Close rate: the share of consultations that become retained files.
- Consultation rate: the share of ad clicks that become booked consultations.
- Target marketing cost per file: the share of the fee you are willing to spend to win it.
Break even CPC = average fee × target marketing share × close rate × consultation rate. If your actual CPC is below that number and your tracking is accurate, the campaign is profitable. If not, improve the conversion steps before you raise bids. Better intake usually beats bigger budgets.
How to lower your cost per retained file
- Target the case and the city: “wrongful dismissal lawyer Mississauga” beats “lawyer”.
- Use negative keywords: jobs, schools, free forms, legal aid and law society searches waste money.
- Match the landing page: each ad goes to a page about exactly that case type.
- Answer the phone: missed calls are the most expensive clicks of all.
- Import offline conversions: send retained files from your CRM to Google Ads so bidding learns what a good lead looks like.
- Test Local Services Ads: pay per lead rather than per click. See our Local Services Ads guide.
- Build SEO alongside: organic rankings cut your dependence on expensive clicks over time.
Keep ads compliant
Ad text is marketing under Law Society rules, so it must be true, accurate and verifiable. Avoid “best”, guaranteed outcomes and specialist titles you do not hold. See lawyer advertising rules in Canada.

Frequently asked questions
What is the average cost per click for lawyers in Canada?
It varies widely. In our October 2026 data, legal CPCs ranged from about US$2 for notary searches to about US$98 for LTD lawyer searches.
Which legal keywords are most expensive?
Long term disability, impaired driving, car accident, dog bite and slip and fall lawyer searches topped our Canadian data.
Why are personal injury clicks so expensive?
Injury files are valuable and many firms bid on the same searches, especially in large cities.
Are these CPCs in Canadian dollars?
No. Google reports them in US dollars, so Canadian dollar costs will be higher at current exchange rates.
How do I know if a CPC is too high for my firm?
Work out your break even CPC from your average fee, close rate, consultation rate and the share of the fee you will spend to win a file.
How can a law firm lower its cost per client?
Target case and city searches, use negative keywords, match landing pages, answer every call and import retained files into Google Ads.
Are Local Services Ads cheaper than search ads for lawyers?
They charge per lead rather than per click, which can lower costs for some firms. Test both and compare cost per retained file.
Should law firms bid on competitor names?
Google allows it, but do not use competitor names in your ad text, and judge it on cost per retained file.
How often does legal CPC data change?
Constantly. Competition, seasons and Google's auctions shift prices, so review your own data monthly.
