Retail marketing guide
How stores win shoppers in person and online
Canada Create™ is a retail marketing agency for independent stores, specialty retailers, multi location chains and brands that sell both in store and online across Canada. We bring more shoppers through your doors and to your online store with local search, Google Shopping and local inventory ads, social media, email and SMS, and paid campaigns planned around the retail calendar, all measured by store visits and sales rather than impressions.
Retail marketing has changed more in the last few years than in the previous twenty. Shoppers check stock on their phones before they drive, compare prices in the aisle, read reviews in the parking lot and expect the same experience in store and online. The retailers who grow treat their website, Google profile, social channels and stores as one shop with many doors.
How shoppers find and choose a store today
Most store visits now start on a screen. A shopper searches “running shoes near me”, “baby store open now” or the name of a product, sees a map with nearby stores, checks whether the item is in stock, scans reviews and photos and decides where to go. Others discover a store on Instagram or TikTok, save the post and visit on the weekend. Loyal customers open your email or text because a new collection arrived.
That means retail advertising has to answer three questions fast: do you have what I want, is it worth the trip, and why you instead of the big box store or the marketplace? Independent and specialty retailers win on expertise, curation, service and community. Chains win on convenience and availability. Your marketing should lead with whichever advantage is truly yours.
Local search and Google Business Profile for stores
For a physical store, your Google Business Profile is often seen by more people than your website. A complete profile for each location includes accurate hours (holiday hours updated before every long weekend and the December rush), categories, photos of the storefront and the inside of the store, products, attributes such as accessibility and in store pickup, and regular posts for new arrivals and events. Each real location gets its own profile; keyword stuffing the business name or creating profiles for locations that do not exist breaks Google’s rules and can get a profile suspended.
Reviews are part of the decision. Ask happy customers to leave a review with a sign at the till, a QR code on the receipt or a follow up email, and reply to reviews, good and bad, calmly and quickly. Never offer discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews; the Competition Bureau treats fake or incentivized reviews as deceptive marketing. Our SEO services, from CAD 1,500 a month, cover local search for single stores and multi location chains, including location pages that rank for each city or neighbourhood.
Show your inventory where shoppers search
Retailers with a product catalogue can put their stock directly in front of shoppers on Google. With a Merchant Center account connected to your inventory, products can appear in free listings and Shopping ads, and with local inventory, Google can show that a product is available at a nearby store, often with an “in store” or “pick up today” label. For many retailers this is the most direct path from a search to a store visit.
It only works if the data is clean: correct prices, availability that updates as stock moves, good product titles and photos, and a website or store page for each product. Most modern point of sale and ecommerce systems, including Shopify, Lightspeed and Square, can feed inventory to Google; we help set up the feed, fix disapprovals and build campaigns around it. If you also sell online, our ecommerce agency and Shopify advertising teams connect the two channels.
Plan campaigns around the retail calendar
Retail runs on seasons, and the best marketing is planned months ahead. The Canadian retail year typically includes back to school in August and September, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the December holiday peak, Boxing Day, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, plus category seasons such as patio and garden in spring or winter outerwear in the fall. Each one needs creative, landing pages, email and ad budgets ready before demand peaks, not the week it arrives.
Between peaks, marketing keeps the store top of mind: new arrivals, in store events, workshops and demos, local partnerships and community causes. A steady rhythm of social posts and emails often matters more for an independent store than a single big campaign.
Social media, video and local influencers
Retail is visual, and social media is where many shoppers discover products. Short video of new arrivals, staff picks, styling ideas, unboxing and behind the scenes content works well on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. Paid social lets you reach people within a few kilometres of each store, retarget website visitors with the products they viewed and promote events.
Local creators can bring a store to new audiences, but every paid, gifted or affiliate relationship must be disclosed clearly, and the brand is responsible for making sure creators do it. See our social media management, social media advertising and influencer marketing services.
Email, SMS and loyalty: sell more to the customers you have
Your existing customers are your most profitable audience. Collecting emails and mobile numbers at checkout, online and through a loyalty program lets you announce new arrivals, invite people to events, remind them of seasonal needs and recognize their birthdays. Segmenting by what they bought and where they shop makes messages feel personal.
Every commercial email and text in Canada must follow CASL: consent before you send, clear identification of your store and a working unsubscribe in every message. Keep receipts and order updates separate from promotions. Our email marketing service builds the welcome, browse, post purchase and win back flows that keep customers returning.
Retail advertising rules to get right
Retail advertising is regulated mainly by the federal Competition Act and provincial consumer protection laws. A few rules matter in almost every campaign:
- Sale and “regular price” claims. Comparing a sale price with a regular or “was” price is misleading unless the item genuinely sold or was offered at that price for a substantial period or in substantial volume.
- All in pricing. Mandatory fees must be included in the advertised price; adding them at checkout (drip pricing) is addressed in the Competition Act.
- Stock and availability. Advertising a bargain you do not have in reasonable quantity can be a bait and switch problem; say “while quantities last” only when it is true and stock is reasonable.
- Environmental and “made in Canada” claims must be accurate and supportable.
- Quebec has French language requirements for commercial communications, signage and websites aimed at Quebec shoppers.
This is general information, not legal advice; check current rules with your legal advisor. We write retail advertising that stays within them.

Measure store visits and sales, not just clicks
Retail marketing is harder to measure than ecommerce because the sale often happens at the till. We track what can be tracked directly (calls, direction requests, website orders, pickup orders, coupon and promo code use, loyalty signups) and use platform store visit estimates and point of sale data where available. Combined, they show which channels and campaigns bring people into the store and which only bring clicks. Budget follows sales.

Retail marketing questions
What does a retail marketing agency do?
It plans and runs the channels that bring shoppers to your stores and online shop: local search, Google Shopping, retail advertising, social media, email and SMS, and the reporting that ties them to sales.
How do I get more foot traffic to my store?
Complete your Google Business Profile, show your products and local stock on Google, run ads near your stores, post new arrivals and events on social media and email your existing customers regularly.
What are local inventory ads?
They are Google Shopping ads and free listings that show a product is available at a nearby store, often with pickup options, using a feed from your point of sale or inventory system.
Is social media worth it for a small store?
Yes, when it is consistent. Short videos of products, staff picks and events help locals discover you, and paid social can reach people within a few kilometres of the store.
What are the rules for sale prices in Canada?
Under the Competition Act, a regular or was price must reflect a genuine price the item sold or was offered at for a substantial period or volume. This is general information, not legal advice.
How do you measure in store sales from marketing?
We track calls, direction requests, pickups, promo codes and loyalty signups, and use store visit estimates and point of sale data where available.
Can you market a chain with many locations?
Yes. Each location gets its own profile and page, campaigns are set by store and region, and reports compare locations.
Who owns the accounts?
You do. Your Google, Merchant Center, ad, social and email accounts are in your name, and we work inside them.
What does retail marketing cost?
SEO starts at CAD 1,500 a month. Shopping, ads and full programs are quoted in writing after a free review, with ad spend paid directly to the platforms.
