ChatGPT search optimization

Help ChatGPT describe your business the way your customers would

ChatGPT SEO helps ChatGPT find your business, read it correctly and cite it when someone in Toronto asks it for a recommendation, a comparison or a quick answer. A growing share of buyers now type the whole question into ChatGPT (“which bookkeeper in North York works with restaurants?”) instead of scanning ten blue links, and the short answer they get names a handful of businesses. Our job is to make sure the facts ChatGPT can reach about you are complete, current and consistent, so you have a fair chance of being one of those names.

This page covers ChatGPT on its own: its crawlers, its controls, the content it can quote and how we measure it. For the wider program across Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude and Grok, see our main page on AI search optimization in Toronto.

Two ways ChatGPT knows about your business

When ChatGPT answers a question, the information can come from two places, and they behave very differently.

What the model already learned

Large language models are trained on large amounts of text collected before a cut-off date. Anything the model absorbed about your company at that point (your name, what you did, perhaps an old address) can surface in an answer without any live lookup. That knowledge ages. If you moved offices, changed services or rebranded after the cut-off, the model may still repeat the old version.

What ChatGPT search reads today

For questions that need current information, ChatGPT runs a search and reads live web pages, then writes its reply from what it found and can show the websites it used. This is the part a business can influence week to week. If your pages are reachable by OpenAI’s search crawler, state your facts plainly and agree with what other sites say about you, ChatGPT search has accurate material to work with. If they are blocked, slow, thin or contradictory, it has to rely on other sources or on older memory.

Most of our ChatGPT SEO work targets the second path, because it is the one that responds to changes you make, and because good live sources also correct stale memory over time.

Two panels comparing what ChatGPT learned in training with what ChatGPT search reads from live web pages today

How ChatGPT search finds and shows your website

OpenAI publishes the names and roles of its web robots on its crawler documentation page. Each one has a separate job, and each is controlled separately in your robots.txt file. As of November 3, 2026, the page lists four user agents that matter to a business website.

User agentWhat OpenAI says it doesWhat blocking it means
OAI-SearchBotFinds websites to show in ChatGPT’s search featuresYour pages are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, apart from navigational links
GPTBotCollects content that may be used to train OpenAI’s foundation modelsA signal that your content should not be used for training; search is not affected
ChatGPT-UserVisits a page when a person’s question or a custom GPT action needs itNot used for automatic crawling or search inclusion; robots.txt may not apply to user-started visits
OAI-AdsBotChecks landing pages submitted as ads in ChatGPTOnly relevant if you advertise in ChatGPT; not used for training

Three points from that documentation shape everything else we do.

  • Search visibility depends on OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, although they can still appear as navigational links. Blocking it, on purpose or by accident, takes you out of the answers that matter most.
  • Training and search are separate choices. You can allow OAI-SearchBot so you appear in search results while disallowing GPTBot so your content is not used to train OpenAI’s foundation models. One does not depend on the other.
  • Changes are not instant. OpenAI notes it can take about 24 hours from a robots.txt update for its search systems to adjust.

Allowing search while declining training

Many owners are comfortable being cited but would rather not contribute content to model training. The robots.txt pattern for that choice is short. A group for OAI-SearchBot that allows the site, and a group for GPTBot that disallows it:

  • User-agent: OAI-SearchBot, then Allow: /
  • User-agent: GPTBot, then Disallow: /

We set this with you as a deliberate business decision, write it down, and check the live file after every site migration, plugin update or hosting change, because those are the moments these lines quietly disappear.

Firewalls, CDNs and bot protection

A correct robots.txt is not enough if something in front of your site turns the crawler away. OpenAI recommends allowing requests from its published IP ranges for OAI-SearchBot, and lists them in a JSON file linked from the documentation. Security plugins, hosting firewalls and content delivery networks often challenge or block unfamiliar bots by default. We read your server logs for the OAI-SearchBot user agent, compare the request IPs with OpenAI’s list, and confirm the crawler receives the same page a visitor does.

ChatGPT-User and pages people paste into a chat

ChatGPT-User is different. It visits a page when a person asks ChatGPT something that requires it, or when a custom GPT action calls your site. OpenAI says it is not used for automatic crawling and is not used to decide whether content may appear in search, and that because these visits are started by a user, robots.txt rules may not apply. In practice that means anyone can ask ChatGPT to read your public page. Make sure what it finds there is accurate.

Four cards explaining OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, ChatGPT-User and OAI-AdsBot and what blocking each one means for a business website

Why ChatGPT gets a business wrong

When we review what ChatGPT says about a company, the errors usually fall into a few patterns, and each one has a different fix.

Old facts from model memory

A business that moved, changed its name or dropped a service after a model’s training cut-off may still be described the old way when ChatGPT answers without searching. The fix is not to argue with the model. It is to make sure every live source says the current version, so search-based answers carry the right facts and later training picks them up.

Two businesses with similar names

The GTA has many companies with close names: two clinics called Maple Dental, a law firm that shares a surname with another, a franchise location and an independent shop with the same brand word. Answer engines can merge them. Clear, consistent signals separate you: the full legal or trading name, the exact address and phone, the neighbourhood, licence or registration numbers where your regulator publishes them, and links between your website and your official listings.

Closed, moved or duplicate locations

Old listings for a location you closed, or duplicate listings created by a previous agency, give an answer engine conflicting addresses. We find them, close or merge them through each platform’s own process, and redirect old location pages on your site to the current ones.

Prices and service lists that drifted

If one page says you offer a service and another page or a directory says you stopped, the answer may go either way. A single, current source of truth for each service, linked from everywhere else, removes the doubt.

Review platforms that disagree

A strong rating on one platform and an old, weak profile on another can lead to mixed descriptions. Claim the profiles that exist, keep them active, and respond to reviews in a way that adds facts (what you did, where and when) rather than generic thanks.

What ChatGPT needs from your website

Once the crawler can get in, the question is whether it finds something worth quoting. ChatGPT search is reading your pages to answer a specific question from a specific person, so the pages that do well are the ones that answer that kind of question directly.

Key facts in the HTML, not hidden behind scripts

Your services, service area, hours, phone number and prices or price factors should be in the page’s HTML text. Content that only appears after JavaScript runs, inside images, or behind a “load more” button may never be seen by a crawler that reads the server’s response. We test each important page with scripts off and fix what disappears.

One clear page for each service you sell

ChatGPT answers narrow questions. A single “Services” page with a list of twelve bullet points gives it very little to cite for “emergency furnace repair in Scarborough”. A dedicated page for each core service, written for the people who buy it, gives it a page that matches. That page should say what the service is, who it is for, where you offer it, what affects the cost, how long it takes and what the customer should do next.

Facts that match everywhere

If your website says you open at 8, your Google Business Profile says 9 and a directory still lists your old Yonge Street address, an answer engine has to guess. We bring your name, address, phone number, hours, service area and core services into line across your website and the listings you control, so every source tells ChatGPT the same story.

Pages for the questions people actually ask ChatGPT

People write to ChatGPT in full sentences, often with their situation attached: “My restaurant in Leslieville needs a new POS and a website that takes online orders. Who in Toronto does both?” Those questions are longer and more specific than search keywords. We collect the real questions your buyers ask (from your sales calls, your inbox, Search Console and People Also Ask data) and make sure each one has a clear answer somewhere on your site.

Content ChatGPT can quote with confidence

There is no published formula for which passages ChatGPT picks, so we stay with editorial habits that make a page easy for any reader, human or machine, to use and verify. They come from long practice in search, and they help with every assistant.

Answer first, then the conditions

Give the answer in the opening sentences of a section, then explain the reasoning, exceptions and evidence. A roofer’s page that says “most of our residential roof replacements take two to four days, depending on weather and roof size” is far easier to quote than three paragraphs of introduction that never commit. Keep the qualifications that make the answer true; do not trim a complex answer into a claim you cannot support.

Specific, checkable details

Names, dates, locations and figures make a statement checkable, but only use them when your records support them. If you describe a result, keep the time period, how it was measured and what else changed. If you cannot back a number, explain the process or the decision instead. Specific wording makes a claim easier to trust; it does not make an answer engine cite it by itself.

Headings that match real questions

A heading such as “How much does a kitchen renovation cost in Toronto?” tells both a reader and a crawler what the section answers. A heading such as “Our approach” tells them nothing. Under each question heading, answer it, and keep one topic per section so a passage still makes sense when it is lifted out alone.

Named, checkable authors

Say who wrote or reviewed the page, what their role is and why they know the subject, with a link to a real profile. Keep that information accurate. An author bio gives readers context for judging the advice; it is not a trick for earning citations, and adding credentials that cannot be verified does more harm than good.

Page elementCommon problemPractical edit
Answer placementBuried after several introduction paragraphsState the answer in the first sentences of the section
ClaimsGeneral statements nobody can checkSpecific facts with dates, places and the context that makes them true
HeadingsGeneric labels such as Overview or BenefitsThe question the section answers, in the buyer’s words
AuthorshipNo name, or a name with no backgroundA named author or reviewer with a real role and profile link
StructureLong sections that mix several topicsOne topic per section, so a passage makes sense on its own

How ChatGPT handles local questions in Toronto

Local questions are where ChatGPT can send a customer to your door, and where wrong information hurts the most. When someone asks for a dentist near Union Station open on Saturday, the answer depends on what reachable sources say about which dentists are near there, what they offer and when they are open.

  • Your own location pages. If you serve several parts of the GTA, say so on the page, with the neighbourhoods and the services you actually provide there. Do not invent locations you do not serve.
  • Business listings that agree with your website. Keep your Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Maps (see our Apple Business Connect guide), Yelp and your BBB entry consistent. OpenAI does not publish which listings ChatGPT uses, so we treat all the major ones as possible inputs.
  • Reviews in your customers’ words. Reviews describe what you are good at in language that matches how people ask. Ask every happy customer, in a way that follows each platform’s rules.
  • Hours, holidays and closures. Stale holiday hours are an easy error to miss. Update them before each long weekend.

The groundwork is the same as strong local SEO in Toronto, which is why we run them together.

Mentions ChatGPT can find about you

ChatGPT search reads more than your website. When it compares businesses, the pages it finds may include association member lists, local news stories, “best of” round-ups, industry directories, forums and review sites. A business that only talks about itself on its own site gives an answer engine one voice. A business that is described the same way by its regulator’s directory, its trade association, a neighbourhood news site and its customers gives it several voices that agree.

We help you claim and correct the listings you are entitled to, make sure your memberships are visible, and prepare real stories and expertise that earn coverage on their merits. We do not buy links, create fake profiles or seed reviews, and any offer to do so is a warning sign.

A ChatGPT SEO checklist for Toronto owners

Use this list to check the ChatGPT-specific basics yourself before you hire anyone. Each item can be confirmed in an afternoon.

  • Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot. Make sure OAI-SearchBot is not disallowed, and that the GPTBot line matches your decision about training.
  • Ask your host or developer whether a firewall, CDN or security plugin blocks AI crawlers as a group. Many offer a one-click setting that does exactly that.
  • Search your server logs, or ask your host to, for the OAI-SearchBot user agent, and check that those requests get a normal page rather than an error or a challenge.
  • View your main service pages with JavaScript turned off. Your services, area, hours and phone number should still be readable.
  • Check that each core service has its own page, and that each page states who it is for, where you offer it and what affects the cost.
  • Compare your name, address, phone and hours on your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business, Yelp and BBB. Fix every difference.
  • Ask ChatGPT five questions your buyers ask, with search on, and write down the businesses named and the links shown. Repeat next month with the same wording.
  • Look at the sources cited for your competitors. Each one is a place your business may also belong.

If any item turns up a problem you cannot fix in-house, that is where an audit starts.

ChatGPT SEO for multi-location brands and franchises

Brands with several GTA locations face a specific risk: ChatGPT may describe the brand well but send people to the wrong branch, or mix the hours of two locations. Each location needs its own page with its own address, phone, hours, services and neighbourhood detail, linked from a clear location finder, and each needs a matching listing on the major platforms. Franchise systems also need one owner for the brand-level facts (what every location offers) and a simple process for each location to keep its local facts current. We set up that structure and the tracked questions for each location, so the report shows which branches are named and which are missing.

How we measure ChatGPT visibility

ChatGPT has no equivalent of Search Console for site owners, so measurement relies on repeatable testing plus the analytics you already have. We keep four things separate, because a citation, a visit and an enquiry are not the same outcome.

Tracked prompts

We agree a fixed set of buyer questions with you (for example “family lawyer in Etobicoke for a separation” or “commercial cleaning companies in Vaughan”) and run them on a schedule, recording the date, whether search was used, the location setting and whether we were signed in. Answers vary between sessions and people, so one good answer proves little; the trend across repeated runs is what counts.

Mentions and cited pages

For each tracked prompt we record whether your business is named, which of your pages are linked, which competitors appear and which outside pages are cited. That list of cited sources often shows exactly where a competitor is getting its mentions.

Accuracy of what ChatGPT says

We check every fact ChatGPT states about you (services, area, hours, phone, prices or price ranges, licences) against the truth, and trace wrong facts back to the page or listing that probably caused them.

Visits and enquiries

Visits that arrive from chatgpt.com can show up as referrals in your analytics when the browser passes that information along. We set up reporting for those visits and connect them to calls, forms and bookings where your tracking allows, and we say plainly where the data cannot see.

What our ChatGPT SEO service includes

Every engagement is scoped to your business after a free consultation, then confirmed in a written custom proposal. The usual components are below.

  • ChatGPT visibility audit. Tracked buyer questions, who ChatGPT names today, which sources it cites and every inaccurate fact about you.
  • Crawler and access review. robots.txt groups for OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot set to your decision, firewall and CDN checks, server log review and a scripts-off render test of key pages.
  • Service and question pages. Answer-first rewrites of the pages that should be cited, and new pages for the real questions your market asks.
  • Entity consistency. Name, address, phone, hours, services and service area aligned across your site, schema and the listings you control.
  • Listings and mentions. Claimed and corrected directory, association and map listings, and help preparing genuine expertise for coverage.
  • Review requests. A review request step built into your customer process, within each platform’s rules.
  • Reporting. A monthly report with tracked prompts, mentions, cited pages, accuracy issues, identifiable referrals and enquiries, with the limits of the data stated.

ChatGPT SEO, ChatGPT ads and ChatGPT for your team

These three get mixed up, and they are different services with different goals.

  • ChatGPT SEO (this page) earns unpaid mentions and citations by making your business easy to find and understand.
  • Ads in ChatGPT are paid placements managed as a separate campaign; see ChatGPT ads in Toronto. OpenAI’s own documentation lists OAI-AdsBot, which visits landing pages submitted as ads to check them against OpenAI’s policies.
  • ChatGPT for your staff is about setting up a workspace, policy and training so your team uses ChatGPT well; see ChatGPT for business in Toronto.

Many people who search “ChatGPT SEO” mean something else again: using ChatGPT to help with SEO tasks such as outlines or keyword ideas. That is a useful skill, and our guides to ChatGPT prompts for SEO and AI prompts for SEO and content cover it. This page is about the opposite direction: getting ChatGPT to recommend you.

Where ChatGPT fits with Google and the other assistants

ChatGPT is one channel among several, and the strongest results come from treating them as one footprint with a few engine-specific settings. Google still sends most search traffic, and its AI Overviews and AI Mode reach anyone searching on Google. Microsoft Copilot matters for buyers inside Windows and Microsoft 365. Perplexity shows numbered sources that make citations easy to study. The shared groundwork (crawlable pages, consistent facts, real reviews and mentions) serves all of them, and it starts with sound SEO services in Toronto. Our AI SEO program in Toronto brings them together in one scope.

Questions owners ask before starting

Is ChatGPT big enough to matter for my business?

For most Toronto businesses that sell to consumers or other companies, yes, because buyers already ask it for shortlists and comparisons, and the answer often names only a few businesses. The value is highest where buyers research before they call: professional services, clinics, trades with high ticket prices, B2B services and software. If your customers mainly find you by walking past, start with Google and your map listings and treat ChatGPT as a later step.

Can anyone promise that ChatGPT will recommend me?

No. ChatGPT decides what to say in each conversation, answers vary between people and sessions, and OpenAI does not sell organic placement. What can be done is to remove the barriers (blocked crawlers, missing pages, conflicting facts) and build the sources that describe you accurately. We report what changes, honestly, including when it does not.

How quickly can things change?

Crawler settings can take effect within about a day, according to OpenAI. New and rewritten pages need to be found and read, and third-party mentions build over months. There is no fixed timeline: the pace depends on competition in your category and on how much groundwork is missing, and the monthly report shows what moved.

ChatGPT SEO in Toronto: questions buyers ask

How ChatGPT search works

What is ChatGPT SEO?

ChatGPT SEO covers everything that helps ChatGPT find, understand and cite your business when people ask it for recommendations or answers: crawler access for OpenAI's search bot, clear pages that answer buyer questions, facts that match across your website and listings, and genuine mentions on other sites. It sits inside a wider AI search program rather than replacing Google SEO.

What is ChatGPT search?

ChatGPT search is the part of ChatGPT that looks up current information on the web while it writes an answer, instead of relying only on what the model learned in training. OpenAI's documentation describes OAI-SearchBot as the crawler that surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features. For a business, it is the path you can influence, because it reads your live pages.

How does ChatGPT search work?

When a question needs current or local information, ChatGPT searches, reads the pages it finds and writes a reply from the most useful passages, often with links to the sites it relied on. Pages have to be reachable by OAI-SearchBot and readable as text. Pages that answer the exact question clearly, and that agree with other sources, give it the strongest material.

What search engine does ChatGPT use?

OpenAI's crawler documentation names OAI-SearchBot as the robot that finds sites for ChatGPT's search features, and it does not list every outside search provider on that page. Because of that, we make sure your site is reachable by OAI-SearchBot and also fully indexed in Google and Bing, since those indexes support several other assistants as well.

Does ChatGPT use Google search?

OpenAI does not say that ChatGPT search runs on Google. What it does document is its own search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and how site owners control it. Ranking well on Google still helps indirectly, because the same clear pages and third-party mentions that earn Google rankings are often the pages other systems find and quote.

Can ChatGPT search the internet in real time?

Yes. ChatGPT can search the web for questions that need current information, and it can visit a specific page when a person asks it to, using the ChatGPT-User agent. That is why outdated hours, prices or service lists on your site can end up in an answer, and why keeping them current matters.

Is ChatGPT an AI search engine now?

In practice it works as one for many people: they ask a question and get a written answer with links instead of a list of results. It is still a conversation, so follow-up questions change the answer. For your business, that means being findable for the first question and for the follow-ups, such as price, area and availability.

Will ChatGPT replace Google for Toronto customers?

Not soon for most businesses. Google still handles most searches and its own AI Overviews reach people inside Google results. ChatGPT is a growing second channel where research-heavy buyers build shortlists. The sensible move is to keep Google SEO strong and make sure ChatGPT finds the same accurate story about you.

Crawlers and access

What is OAI-SearchBot?

OAI-SearchBot is OpenAI's search crawler. According to OpenAI, it is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features, and sites that opt out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, apart from navigational links. OpenAI recommends allowing it in robots.txt and allowing requests from its published IP ranges.

What is GPTBot?

GPTBot is OpenAI's crawler for collecting content that may be used to train its generative AI foundation models. Disallowing GPTBot tells OpenAI not to use your content for training. It is controlled separately from OAI-SearchBot, so you can decline training and still appear in ChatGPT search answers.

Does blocking GPTBot remove my site from ChatGPT search?

No. OpenAI treats the two robots.txt tokens independently: blocking GPTBot concerns training, while OAI-SearchBot controls whether your pages can appear in ChatGPT search. Blocking OAI-SearchBot is the setting that removes you from search answers, so check which one your robots.txt, security plugin or host has blocked.

What is ChatGPT-User and does it follow robots.txt?

ChatGPT-User is the agent ChatGPT uses when a person's question, or a custom GPT action, needs to visit a page. OpenAI says it is not used for automatic crawling or for deciding search inclusion, and that because a user starts these visits, robots.txt rules may not apply. Treat every public page as something ChatGPT may be asked to read.

How do I let ChatGPT search reach my website?

Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, make sure your firewall, CDN or security plugin does not challenge requests from OpenAI's published IP ranges, and keep important information in the page text. Then confirm in your server logs that OAI-SearchBot requests return the full page, not an error or a challenge screen.

How long does ChatGPT take to notice a robots.txt change?

OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours from a robots.txt update for its search systems to adjust. Changes to the pages themselves take longer to show in answers, because the crawler has to revisit them and the new information has to be used in replies.

Why does ChatGPT not show my website even though it is live?

The usual causes are a blocked OAI-SearchBot, a firewall that challenges unfamiliar bots, key text that only appears after JavaScript runs, or simply no page that answers the question asked. Other sites may also describe your competitors more clearly. An audit checks each cause in order, starting with access.

Can my firewall or Cloudflare settings block ChatGPT?

Yes. Bot protection on hosts, CDNs and security plugins often blocks or challenges crawlers it does not recognize. OpenAI publishes the IP ranges for OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot and ChatGPT-User so you can allow them. We test from outside and read your logs, because a correct robots.txt does not help if the request never reaches it.

What is OAI-AdsBot?

OAI-AdsBot is the OpenAI agent that visits landing pages submitted as ads in ChatGPT to check them against OpenAI's policies, and it may use the page content to decide when an ad is relevant. OpenAI says it only visits pages submitted as ads and its data is not used for training. It only matters if you advertise in ChatGPT.

Getting cited and recommended

What makes ChatGPT mention a business by name?

Give ChatGPT accurate material to work with: allow OAI-SearchBot, publish a clear page for each service and area, keep your name, address, phone and hours identical across your site and listings, collect genuine reviews, and earn mentions on sites that describe businesses like yours. Then track a fixed set of buyer questions to see whether you are named.

How can I get ChatGPT to recommend my business?

ChatGPT recommends businesses that its sources describe as a good fit for the question. You improve your chances by stating clearly who you serve, where and how, by matching that description across listings, and by being mentioned positively on independent sites and in reviews. No one can force a recommendation; the work removes the reasons you would be left out.

How do I get indexed in ChatGPT?

There is no submission form. ChatGPT search finds pages through OpenAI's crawler, so the steps are to allow OAI-SearchBot, avoid blocking its IP ranges, link every important page from your site's navigation or sitemap, and keep the pages fast and readable as plain HTML. Being well indexed in Google and Bing helps other assistants at the same time.

How do I get listed on ChatGPT?

ChatGPT has no business directory to join. Being listed means being findable in its search results and named in its answers. That comes from crawlable pages, consistent listings on the major map and directory platforms, and independent mentions, the same signals that describe your business everywhere else.

How do I show up in ChatGPT results for my service and area?

Publish one page per service and area that answers the questions buyers ask, such as cost factors, timing and availability, with your Toronto or GTA service area stated plainly. Make sure those pages are reachable, linked internally and consistent with your Business Profile. Then test the exact questions on a schedule.

Why is ChatGPT naming a competitor instead of my business?

In most cases the sources ChatGPT read describe that competitor more clearly for the question asked: a dedicated service page, more reviews that mention the service, an industry directory listing or a story on a local site. Comparing the sources cited for them with the sources about you shows which gaps to close first.

Does ChatGPT need special schema or markup?

OpenAI does not document any special markup requirement for ChatGPT search. Accurate structured data that matches the visible page, such as LocalBusiness or Service markup, is still good practice because it removes ambiguity for every system. Treat it as support for clear content, not a shortcut.

Do Google reviews affect whether ChatGPT recommends me?

OpenAI does not publish which review sources ChatGPT reads. Reviews still matter because they are public descriptions of your work in your customers' words, and they often appear on pages that answer engines find. Collect reviews steadily on the platforms your buyers use, and never buy or script them.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?

Unpaid answers are not for sale. ChatGPT does offer advertising, which is a separate, paid placement with its own rules and a landing-page check by OAI-AdsBot. We run ChatGPT ads as a separate service; this page is about earning the unpaid mentions and citations.

Content ChatGPT quotes

How should I write a page so ChatGPT can quote it?

Put the answer in the first sentences of each section, then explain the conditions and evidence. Use headings phrased as the questions buyers ask, keep one topic per section, and include specific details your records support, such as service areas, timelines and what affects the price. A passage that makes sense on its own is easier to quote accurately.

Does ChatGPT prefer long pages or short pages?

Length is not the goal. ChatGPT needs a passage that answers the question asked, and a page that covers the topic fully gives it more chances to find one. A long page full of repetition helps no one; a focused page that answers every real question about one service usually works better than one thin page or one sprawling page.

Do FAQ sections help with ChatGPT?

They can, when the questions are real ones your buyers ask and the answers are direct and specific. A question and a short, complete answer is an easy unit for any answer engine to reuse. Copying generic FAQs from other sites adds little, so build yours from your sales calls, inbox and search data.

How do I get cited by ChatGPT for video content?

Give each video a page on your site with a written summary or transcript, a clear title that matches the question it answers, and the key facts in text. Crawlers read text far more reliably than they interpret video. Publishing the video on a public platform with a full description gives answer engines a second place to find the same information.

Should I add numbers, dates and names to my pages?

Yes, when your records support them. Specific details such as years in business, service areas, licence numbers, typical timelines or price factors make a statement checkable and useful. Unsupported numbers do the opposite and can be repeated back to buyers as facts, so leave out anything you cannot stand behind.

What happens when ChatGPT repeats outdated information about my business?

Old details often come from the model's training or from a stale listing. Correct the information on your website first, then on every listing and directory that shows the old version, and keep OAI-SearchBot allowed so search answers pick up the new facts. Recheck the same questions after a few weeks.

Will ChatGPT cite a page that was written with AI help?

How a page was drafted matters less than whether it is accurate, specific and useful. Pages that repeat generic text found everywhere else give ChatGPT nothing new to cite. Pages with your own prices or price factors, process, photos, staff expertise and local detail do, however they were drafted.

Local and Toronto

How does ChatGPT answer near me questions in Toronto?

For local questions, ChatGPT relies on what reachable sources say about which businesses are in that area, what they offer and when they are open. Location pages that name the neighbourhoods you really serve, consistent map and directory listings, and reviews that mention the area all help it place you correctly.

Does ChatGPT SEO work for businesses in Brampton, Mississauga or Vaughan?

Yes. The same work applies anywhere in the GTA. What changes is the evidence for each area: a page or section that describes the service you provide there, listings with the right address or service area, and reviews from customers in those places. Do not create pages for areas you do not actually serve.

Does ChatGPT know which parts of the GTA I serve?

Only if your sources say so clearly. State your service area in text on your site, match it in your Business Profile and other listings, and mention it naturally on service pages. A map image or a list of postal codes inside a picture is invisible to a crawler that reads text.

What should I do if ChatGPT shows the wrong hours or address?

Fix the source. Check your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business and the main directories for the wrong detail, correct each one, and update holiday hours ahead of time. Then rerun the question in a fresh chat after a few weeks. We trace each wrong fact to its likely source as part of the audit.

Can a law firm, clinic or other regulated practice in Ontario do ChatGPT SEO?

Yes, within the rules of its regulator. The work focuses on accurate, factual information: services, areas, credentials you really hold, hours and how to book. Claims your regulator restricts, such as superiority or outcome promises, stay out of your pages, so they cannot be repeated by ChatGPT either.

Does ChatGPT use my Google Business Profile?

OpenAI does not document that it reads Google Business Profiles. Keep the profile accurate anyway, because it feeds Google's own AI features and its details are widely copied, and make sure your website and other listings match it so every source agrees.

Measuring results

How can I tell whether ChatGPT is citing my business?

Run the questions your buyers ask in ChatGPT on a fixed schedule and record the date, settings, whether you were named, which of your pages were linked and which sources were cited. One check is a snapshot; a series of checks over months shows the trend. We keep that record and report it monthly.

Can I see ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics?

Often, yes. Visits from chatgpt.com can appear as referral traffic when the browser passes that information along. Some visits arrive without it and show as direct traffic, so the number you see is a minimum. We set up a report for AI referrals and connect it to calls and forms where your tracking allows.

Why do ChatGPT answers about my business differ from person to person?

ChatGPT writes each answer fresh. The wording of the question, earlier messages in the chat, the person's location, whether search was used and whether memory is on can all change the result. That is why we test a fixed set of questions under recorded conditions instead of trusting one screenshot.

How do you track ChatGPT visibility over time?

We keep a stable list of buyer questions, run them on a schedule under recorded conditions, and log mentions, linked pages, cited competitors and any inaccurate facts. Alongside that we track AI referral visits and enquiries. Changes in the trend, not single answers, guide what we fix next.

Is a ChatGPT citation the same as a lead?

No. A citation means ChatGPT linked or named you; a visit means someone clicked; a lead means someone called, booked or sent a form. Each is counted separately in our reports, because one favourable answer does not prove business impact.

How do I analyze ChatGPT citations for SEO?

Collect the sources ChatGPT cites for your key questions, then group them: your own pages, competitor pages, directories, news and forums. The pages that keep appearing for your competitors show where you are missing, whether that is a service page, a directory listing or coverage on a local site.

Working with us

What does a ChatGPT SEO service include?

At Canada Create it includes a visibility audit of real buyer questions, a crawler and firewall review for OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot, answer-first service and question pages, name, address, phone and hours consistency, listing and mention work, review requests within platform rules, and monthly reporting on prompts, citations, accuracy, referrals and enquiries.

How much does ChatGPT SEO cost in Toronto?

It depends on how many services and locations you have, how much groundwork is missing and how competitive your category is. We do not publish prices. After a free consultation you receive a written custom proposal with the fees, and any third-party costs are listed separately.

How long does ChatGPT SEO take?

Access fixes can take effect within about a day, according to OpenAI. New pages, corrected listings and third-party mentions take longer to be found and used, often months. There is no fixed timeline, so we agree tracked questions at the start and report the trend monthly.

Does ChatGPT confuse businesses with similar names?

It can, especially in a large market like the GTA where several companies share a name or a brand word. Keep your full trading name, exact address, phone and neighbourhood identical everywhere, add registration or licence numbers where your regulator publishes them, and link your website to your official listings so the signals point to one business.

Is ChatGPT SEO different from regular SEO?

It builds on the same foundation (crawlable pages, useful content, consistent facts and a good reputation) and adds ChatGPT-specific settings and checks: OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot decisions, firewall access for OpenAI's IP ranges, conversation-style questions and prompt tracking. Most of the work helps your Google rankings at the same time.

Can I do ChatGPT SEO myself?

You can do a good part of it. Check your robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot, make sure each service has a clear page, align your listings, ask for reviews and test your key questions monthly. An agency helps when the site has technical barriers, many locations or a competitive category.

Do I need ChatGPT SEO if I already rank well on Google?

Strong Google rankings help, but they do not mean that ChatGPT finds or describes you correctly. Blocked OpenAI crawlers, firewall challenges and conflicting listings can still keep you out of its answers. An audit shows quickly whether your Google strength is carrying over.

Is ChatGPT SEO the same as ChatGPT ads?

No. ChatGPT SEO earns unpaid mentions and citations; ChatGPT ads are paid placements with their own campaign settings and policies. They can work together, and we manage them as two separate services so each is measured on its own.
