ChatGPT advertising
Advertise on ChatGPT with campaigns you can measure
ChatGPT ads put your business in front of people at the moment they ask for help. ChatGPT ads management in Toronto is the work of setting up, running and measuring advertising inside ChatGPT for Toronto and GTA businesses: checking your category is eligible, building campaigns in OpenAI’s Ads Manager, writing ads that suit a conversation, connecting conversion tracking and reporting what the spend produced. Canada Create has run search and social advertising from its office at 126 Willowdale Ave., Suite #3, in North York since 2008, is a Google Partner and is a BBB Accredited Business with an A+ rating.
ChatGPT advertising is new, still in beta and changing quickly. This page describes the product as it works in Canada in November 2026, links to OpenAI’s own help pages, and says plainly where it does not fit yet.
What ChatGPT ads are
ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements that OpenAI shows below ChatGPT’s answers. Each ad is labelled as sponsored and sits apart from the answer itself. OpenAI states that ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives, that advertisers never see users’ chats, and that advertisers receive only aggregated performance figures such as views and clicks.
An ad carries your business name and logo, a headline, a short description, an image and a link to your landing page. Ads Manager lets you run a single image or several images in one ad. When someone taps the ad, they leave the conversation for your site, so the landing page does the rest of the work.
Who sees ChatGPT ads in Canada
OpenAI began showing ads to Canadian users on 16 April 2026, after a first test in the United States. In Canada, as elsewhere, ads appear for logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. People on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans do not see ads, accounts OpenAI identifies as belonging to someone under 18 are excluded, and ads are not placed near sensitive conversations such as personal health, mental health or politics. Users can also turn off ad personalization in their settings. The audience you can reach is therefore large but not the whole ChatGPT user base, and it skews toward people using the free product. OpenAI’s ads in ChatGPT help page sets out the current rules.
How ChatGPT advertising matches an ad to a conversation
There are no keywords to bid on in the Google Ads sense. OpenAI’s system looks at the context and intent of the current conversation, the content of your ad and landing page, and context hints you supply about what you offer. When a user has ad personalization switched on, it can also use some signals from their wider ChatGPT activity. Eligible ads then compete in an auction that weighs relevance alongside the bid.
For an advertiser, that changes the craft. Context hints guide matching but do not force your ad into a particular conversation, and a clear landing page that describes the service in plain language helps the system understand where your ad belongs. Writing ads for ChatGPT is closer to answering a question well than to writing a keyword-stuffed search headline.
Where ChatGPT ads fit beside search ads
A Google search is usually a few words typed when someone already knows what they want. A ChatGPT conversation is often longer: comparing options, planning a trip, working out which software to buy, deciding what to cook or how to fix something. Ads that appear there reach people earlier and with more context about their problem, which suits considered purchases and services that need explaining.
Advertise on ChatGPT: getting started with Ads Manager
Businesses can buy ChatGPT ads directly through OpenAI’s self-serve Ads Manager or through OpenAI’s sales team and partners. OpenAI’s Ads Manager availability page lists Canada for self-serve buying, and the legal entity that advertises and pays must be based in a listed country.
Setting up a campaign involves:
- Advertiser registration: your business details, verification and a payment method, held in your company’s name.
- Campaign settings: objective, budget, bids and pacing, and the countries and, where available, regions, cities or postal codes you want to reach.
- Ads and landing pages: images, headlines, descriptions and context hints, each checked against OpenAI’s ad policies before it runs.
- Measurement: OpenAI’s Measurement Pixel on your website, its Conversions API for server-side events, and UTM parameters so your own analytics see ChatGPT traffic.
Some new self-serve accounts can advertise only in their home country at first, with wider access after identity verification and spending history. For a Toronto business advertising in Canada that rarely matters, but it is worth knowing before planning a campaign across borders.
ChatGPT ads pricing, bidding and budgets
OpenAI bills ChatGPT ads by impression or by valid click, depending on the bidding you choose, and campaigns can be optimized for views, clicks or conversions. You set the budget and pay OpenAI directly for the media; our management fee is separate and quoted in writing after a free consultation.
OpenAI has said it does not yet publish performance benchmarks across advertisers or industries, and reporting can lag: spend can take hours to update and attributed conversions roughly a day or two. A first ChatGPT campaign is best treated as a measured test with a clear question, for example whether it brings demo requests or bookings at a cost you would accept, rather than a channel to scale on day one.
Measuring ChatGPT ads properly
Clicks are easy to count; customers are what matter. We install the Measurement Pixel and, where your systems allow, the Conversions API, then set up the conversion events that represent real outcomes: a booking, a quote request, a purchase or a qualified call. UTM tags send the same visits into your analytics so ChatGPT can be compared with Google, Meta and your other channels on the same basis.
OpenAI also reports view-through conversions, which happen after someone saw an ad without clicking it. Ads Manager keeps these separate from click-through conversions, and we report them separately too, because they are a different kind of evidence. Where you share lead and sales records, reporting follows the ad through to qualified opportunities and revenue.
Ad creative and landing pages for a conversation
People reading a ChatGPT answer are in research mode. Ads that work there answer the question behind the conversation, show the product or service clearly, and lead to a page that continues the same thought. We write the headline, description and context hints, produce or adapt the images, and build or adjust a landing page so the promise in the ad is kept on the page.
For Quebec audiences, ads and landing pages are prepared in French as well as English, and the same Charter of the French Language considerations apply as to any other advertising in Quebec.
Which businesses ChatGPT ads suit today, and which they do not
OpenAI’s ad policies are stricter than Google’s and change often. At the time of writing, political advertising, gambling, dating, and alcohol and drug ads are not allowed. For Canadian businesses that means:
- A good fit now: ecommerce and retail, travel and hospitality, restaurants and food brands, software and SaaS, education and training, consumer services, home services and B2B services.
- Not available today: cannabis and alcohol advertising.
If your business is in a restricted field, we will say so at the first call. Google Ads management in Toronto and AI search optimization in Toronto, which helps ChatGPT and other assistants mention your business in their unpaid answers, are the routes that work for you now. We recheck OpenAI’s policies before every new campaign.
ChatGPT ads, Google Ads and AI search optimization: three different jobs
These three are easy to confuse because they all involve search and AI.
- ChatGPT ads are paid placements below ChatGPT’s answers. You pay for impressions or clicks, and the ad stops when the budget stops.
- Google Ads are paid placements on Google Search, Maps, YouTube and partner sites, including in and around Google’s AI Overviews. They reach people when they search, which is still where most local buying starts.
- AI search optimization is unpaid work on your website, business profiles and reputation so that ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google’s AI answers mention and cite your business. It takes longer and lasts longer.
Most businesses that test ChatGPT ads should already have Google Ads and their basic AI search visibility in order, because those two capture the people who are ready to act. ChatGPT ads then add reach earlier in the decision. If you only want staff to use ChatGPT well inside your company, that is a different service: ChatGPT for business in Toronto.
Planning a first ChatGPT ads test
A useful first test answers one commercial question. For an online store it might be whether ChatGPT brings first orders at a cost close to Meta’s; for a software company, whether it brings demo requests from the right size of business; for a tour operator, whether people planning a Toronto trip book after seeing the ad. We agree that question, the conversion that answers it and the budget and period needed before anything is built.
The test then runs with a controlled budget, a small number of ads and landing pages, and tracking checked on day one. We watch delivery daily in the first week, because a new platform can under-deliver or spend unevenly, and then review weekly. At the end of the period you see spend, conversions, cost per result and the comparison with your other channels, with a clear recommendation: expand, adjust or stop.
Common mistakes with ChatGPT advertising
The new platform invites a few predictable errors:
- Treating context hints as keywords: stuffing them with search phrases rather than describing the offer and the customer’s problem.
- Sending clicks to the home page: a conversation is specific, so the landing page should be too.
- Launching without the pixel: without conversion tracking, Ads Manager can only optimize toward clicks, and you cannot compare results with other channels.
- Ignoring the policy check: building a campaign in a restricted category and losing weeks to rejected ads.
- Judging the test too early: reporting delays of a day or two and a short learning period mean the first week rarely tells the whole story.
- Adding view-through conversions to the totals: they belong on their own line, because nobody clicked.
Privacy, consent and Canadian rules
OpenAI keeps chats private from advertisers, so ChatGPT ads do not give you anyone’s conversation or personal details. The data you control is on your side: the pixel on your site, the events you send through the Conversions API and the leads you collect. Those follow the same Canadian rules as any other ad platform, including PIPEDA and, for Quebec visitors, Quebec’s private sector privacy law, so your consent banner and privacy policy should cover the pixel before it fires. Commercial emails or texts you send to people who enquire still need CASL consent.
How Canada Create manages ChatGPT ads
Every engagement starts with an eligibility check against OpenAI’s current policies and an honest view of whether your customers are likely to be using ChatGPT during their decision. From there, the work covers:
- Ads Manager setup in your business’s name, with your team holding admin access
- Campaign structure, budgets, bids and location settings
- Ad copy, context hints, images and landing pages, approved by you before launch
- Measurement Pixel, Conversions API and UTM tracking, tested before spend starts
- Weekly review of spend, delivery and conversions, and policy checks as OpenAI’s rules change
- A monthly report and call comparing ChatGPT with your other channels on cost per enquiry or sale
We also keep a running record of what OpenAI changes, from new formats to new countries and categories, so you hear about changes that affect your campaigns without having to follow every announcement.

ChatGPT ads in Toronto: questions advertisers ask
ChatGPT ads basics
Does ChatGPT have ads now?
Yes. OpenAI shows sponsored ads below ChatGPT's answers for logged-in adult users on the Free and Go plans, and the rollout reached Canada in April 2026. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans do not show ads.
What are ChatGPT ads?
They are labelled sponsored placements shown below a ChatGPT answer, with an advertiser's name, logo, headline, description, image and a link to the advertiser's site. They are bought through OpenAI's Ads Manager or its sales team and partners, and OpenAI says they do not change the answer itself.
What do ChatGPT ads look like?
An ad appears beneath the answer in a separate box marked as sponsored. It shows the business name and logo, a short headline and description, one or more images and a link. Tapping it opens the advertiser's landing page outside the chat.
Why am I getting ads on ChatGPT?
Ads appear on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans for adult users. The ad you see is chosen from the topic of your current conversation and, if ad personalization is on, some signals from your wider ChatGPT use. You can see why an ad appeared and change personalization in Settings.
How do I stop getting ChatGPT ads?
Paid plans such as Plus and Pro do not show ads. On the Free plan, OpenAI offers an option to see fewer ads in exchange for fewer daily free messages, and you can turn off ad personalization and delete ads data under Settings, Ad Controls.
Do ChatGPT ads influence the answers?
OpenAI states that they do not. Its ad system runs separately from the model that writes answers, ads are placed below the response and labelled, and advertisers cannot pay to change what ChatGPT says. Unpaid mentions in answers come from the information ChatGPT finds about a business.
Can advertisers see my ChatGPT conversations?
No. OpenAI says advertisers never see chats or personal details. They receive aggregated, non-identifying performance figures such as total views, clicks and conversions on their own websites.
Are ChatGPT ads available in Canada?
Yes. OpenAI started showing ads to Canadian Free and Go users on 16 April 2026, and its Ads Manager availability page lists Canada for self-serve advertisers. The advertiser's legal entity must be based in a listed country.
Getting started
How do I advertise on ChatGPT?
Register as an advertiser in OpenAI's Ads Manager at ads.openai.com, verify your business, add a payment method, then create a campaign with an objective, budget, bids, locations and ads. Install the Measurement Pixel before launch so you can see which clicks became customers.
How to advertise a business on ChatGPT?
Start by checking that your category is allowed under OpenAI's ad policies. Then set up Ads Manager in your company's name, write ads and context hints that describe your offer clearly, build a landing page that continues the conversation, and run a measured test with a fixed budget and goal.
What is ChatGPT Ads Manager?
Ads Manager is OpenAI's self-serve tool for ChatGPT advertising. Businesses use it to register, add billing, set budgets, bids and pacing, upload ads, choose locations, launch campaigns and view performance reports.
Can any business advertise on ChatGPT?
No. The advertiser must be in a supported country and follow OpenAI's ad policies, which currently exclude or restrict political, gambling, dating, alcohol and drug ads.
Do I need a separate budget for ChatGPT ads?
Yes. ChatGPT ads are billed by OpenAI to your own payment method, separately from Google or Meta. Most businesses fund a first test from a small share of their existing paid media budget and decide on more after seeing cost per enquiry.
Can ChatGPT ads target Toronto only?
Ads Manager targets by country and, where OpenAI offers it, by region, city, market or postal code. We check the location options available for Canada when the campaign is built and set them to the areas you serve.
Can I run ChatGPT ads in French for Quebec?
Yes. Ads and landing pages can be prepared in French, and Quebec's language rules for commercial advertising apply as they do on any other platform. Location settings are used to reach Quebec where available.
How long does it take to launch ChatGPT ads?
Account registration, verification and ad review can take from a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on the business and the ads. Measurement and landing page work usually happen in parallel, so a first campaign is often ready within a few weeks of approval.
Costs and bidding
How much does it cost to run ads on ChatGPT?
You choose the budget. OpenAI charges by impression or by valid click depending on your bidding, and prices come from an auction. OpenAI does not publish benchmark costs by industry yet, so the first weeks of a test set the realistic figures for your business.
Are ChatGPT ads pay per click?
They can be. OpenAI first sold ChatGPT ads on a cost per thousand impressions basis and later added cost per click bidding and conversion-based optimization. Ads Manager lets you pick the bidding that matches your goal.
How does the ChatGPT ads auction work?
OpenAI describes a relevance-weighted auction: eligible ads are scored on how well they fit the conversation and compared on bid, and the winner pays based on the next competitor rather than its own maximum bid. A relevant ad can beat a higher bid that fits poorly.
Is there a minimum spend for ChatGPT ads?
OpenAI's terms and Ads Manager settings define any minimum budget, and they have changed during the beta. We confirm the current requirement when the account is set up and plan the test budget so it is large enough to learn from.
What does Canada Create charge to manage ChatGPT ads?
Management is quoted in writing after a free consultation, based on the campaigns, creative, landing pages and measurement work involved. Your ad spend is paid directly to OpenAI and shown separately from our fee.
Are ChatGPT ads worth it for my business?
They can be worth testing if your category is eligible and your buyers use ChatGPT to research before they choose, for example in travel, software, ecommerce, education or home services. Judge them on cost per enquiry or sale against your other channels after a fair test.
Targeting and matching
How does ChatGPT decide which ad to show?
It looks at the context and intent of the current conversation, the ad's text and landing page, and context hints from the advertiser. With ad personalization on, it may also use some signals from the user's wider ChatGPT activity. Relevance and bids are then weighed together.
Do ChatGPT ads use keywords?
Not in the Google Ads sense. Advertisers supply context hints describing what they offer, which guide matching but are not exact-match keywords and do not ensure placement in a particular conversation. Clear landing pages help the system understand the offer.
Which conversations never show ads?
OpenAI says ads are not shown near sensitive topics, including personal health, mental health and politics, and are not shown to accounts identified as belonging to people under 18. Those exclusions apply whatever the advertiser's settings.
Can I retarget my website visitors on ChatGPT?
OpenAI's Ads Manager has been adding audience features during the beta, and what is available changes. We check the current audience options when planning a campaign and use them only where your privacy notice and consent settings cover it.
Can ChatGPT ads show to people on paid plans?
No. OpenAI shows ads on the Free and Go plans only. People on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans do not see them, which is worth remembering for B2B campaigns aimed at companies that buy business plans.
Measurement and results
How do you track conversions from ChatGPT ads?
With OpenAI's Measurement Pixel on your site, its Conversions API for server-side events, and UTM parameters on landing page links so your own analytics record the visits. We set up events for the actions that matter, such as bookings, quote requests and purchases, and test them before launch.
What is the ChatGPT Measurement Pixel?
It is a small script from OpenAI that runs on your website and reports conversion events, such as a purchase or lead, back to Ads Manager. It works alongside the Conversions API, which sends the same events from your server for more reliable tracking.
What are view-through conversions in ChatGPT ads?
They are conversions that happen after someone saw your ad without clicking it. Ads Manager reports them separately from click-through conversions. They are useful context, but we report them on their own line rather than adding them to enquiry totals.
How long does ChatGPT ads reporting take to update?
OpenAI notes that spend figures can lag by a few hours and attributed conversions can take roughly 24 to 48 hours to appear. Daily decisions should allow for that delay.
How do you measure whether ChatGPT ads worked?
We agree one question before launch, such as cost per qualified lead or cost per sale, then compare ChatGPT with Google and Meta on the same basis using your analytics and CRM records. The monthly report shows spend, conversions, cost per result and what we would change.
Can ChatGPT ads results be compared with Google Ads?
Yes, if both are measured the same way. UTM tags and the same conversion events in your analytics make the comparison fair. Expect different behaviour: ChatGPT reaches people earlier in their research, so the path to a sale can be longer.
Policies and eligibility
Are political ads allowed on ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI does not currently allow ads that advocate for or against political candidates, parties, elections, public policy or contested social issues in ChatGPT.
Why was my ChatGPT ad rejected?
Common reasons are a restricted category, claims the landing page does not support, a landing page that does not work or does not match the ad, or images and text that break OpenAI's ad policies. Ads Manager shows the reason; the fix is to correct the cause and resubmit.
Do OpenAI's ad rules change often?
Yes. The program is in beta, and OpenAI has expanded countries, formats, bidding and categories several times in 2026. We check the current policies and Ads Manager options before each new campaign and tell clients when a change affects them.
ChatGPT ads vs other channels
What is the difference between ChatGPT ads and Google Ads?
Google Ads reach people when they search and are bought on keywords, with a long track record and detailed benchmarks. ChatGPT ads reach people during a conversation, are matched on context rather than keywords and are still in beta. Most businesses should have Google Ads working before adding ChatGPT.
Is ChatGPT advertising the same as AI search optimization?
No. ChatGPT ads are paid placements below answers. AI search optimization is unpaid work that helps ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers mention and cite your business in the answer itself. They work well together.
Can I pay to be mentioned in ChatGPT's answers?
No. Paid ads appear below the answer and are labelled as sponsored. Being mentioned inside an answer depends on what ChatGPT can find about your business on your website, profiles, reviews and other sites, which is what AI search optimization works on.
Should I move my Google Ads budget to ChatGPT ads?
Not all at once. Google still carries most local and ready-to-buy searches. A sensible approach is a separate, limited ChatGPT test with the same conversion tracking, then shifting budget only if ChatGPT produces customers at a comparable or better cost.
Are ChatGPT ads good for B2B companies?
They can be for software, SaaS and B2B services where buyers research options in ChatGPT, but people on business plans do not see ads. LinkedIn and Google Ads usually stay the core B2B channels, with ChatGPT tested as an additional source of demo or consultation requests.
Is ChatGPT for business the same service as ChatGPT ads?
No. ChatGPT ads are advertising aimed at customers. ChatGPT for business is about setting up ChatGPT for your own staff, with workspace settings, policies and training.
Working with Canada Create
Do you manage ChatGPT ads for Toronto businesses?
Yes. Canada Create sets up and manages ChatGPT ads for eligible businesses in Toronto, the GTA and across Canada, alongside Google Ads, social media advertising and AI search optimization, with one report covering all of them.
Who owns the ChatGPT Ads Manager account?
Your business does. The advertiser account is registered in your company's name with your payment method, and we work through access you control. Campaign history and data stay with your business.
What do you need from me to start ChatGPT ads?
Business registration details for verification, a payment method for OpenAI, access to your website or developer for the pixel, your offers and approved claims, images or brand assets, and someone who will follow up enquiries quickly.
What does a ChatGPT ads report include?
Spend, impressions, clicks, click-through and view-through conversions reported separately, cost per result and, where you share records, qualified leads and sales. It also notes OpenAI policy or product changes that affect your account and the next decision.
How do I get a proposal for ChatGPT ads?
Use the form on this page or call (416) 273-9030, Monday to Friday, 9 am to 6 pm, and Saturday, 10 am to 2 pm. Tell us what you sell and who buys it; we check eligibility and reply within one business day with next steps toward a custom proposal.
