How Much Do Facebook and Instagram Ads Cost in Canada?

This guide supports our social media advertising service.

What ads really cost: a phone with feed tiles beside a stack of coins and a blank price tag

Facebook and Instagram ads cost whatever budget you set: Meta never charges more than your lifetime budget, and you decide the daily or total amount before a campaign starts. What changes is how much each result costs, because both platforms sell space through the same Meta auction, where price depends on your audience, your goal, your ad and how many other advertisers want the same people. This guide explains how Meta charges, what drives cost per click and cost per lead in Canada, and how to work out a budget that makes sense for your business.

How much do Facebook and Instagram ads cost?

There is no fixed price list. You set a budget and Meta spends it in an auction, so two businesses with the same budget can pay very different amounts per click or per lead. Facebook and Instagram ads are bought in the same place (Meta Ads Manager) and usually run together, so the cost question is the same for both; the placement settings decide whether your ad shows on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger or across all of them.

Instead of asking “what does an ad cost?”, it helps to ask three questions: how much can you afford to pay for one customer, how many enquiries turn into customers, and how much do you need to spend to test that properly.

How does Meta charge for ads?

Meta’s own bidding documentation describes the pieces:

  • Budget: a daily budget is the average you are willing to spend each day, and spend can run higher on days with better opportunities. A lifetime budget is a total for the campaign’s run, and Meta says you will not be charged more than your lifetime budget unless you change your delivery settings.
  • Optimization goal: what you want the system to find, such as link clicks, leads, purchases or reach.
  • Billing event: what you actually pay for, most often impressions (priced per thousand, called CPM), with some objectives allowing other events such as clicks.
  • Bid strategy: lowest cost (Meta spends your budget to get the most results), or a cost or bid cap if you need to hold each result under a set amount.

The auction weighs your bid against how likely each person is to take the action you chose. A relevant ad that people respond to wins more often at a lower cost than a weak ad with a higher bid.

CPM vs CPC: which do I pay?

CPM is the cost per thousand impressions; CPC is the cost per click. Most campaigns are billed on impressions even when you optimize for clicks or leads, so CPM is what Meta charges and CPC is a result you calculate: total spend divided by clicks. Watch both. A rising CPM means the audience is getting more expensive; a rising CPC with a steady CPM means fewer people are clicking, which points to the ad or the offer.

What drives the cost of Meta ads in Canada?

  • Audience size and competition. A narrow audience in downtown Toronto that many advertisers chase costs more per impression than a broad provincial audience.
  • Season. Retail competition from Black Friday to the holidays tends to push CPMs up for everyone, including service businesses.
  • Your goal. Optimizing for purchases or leads costs more per impression than optimizing for reach, because Meta looks for people more likely to act.
  • Creative. Ads people stop for, engage with and do not hide perform better in the auction. Fresh creative often lowers cost more than budget changes do.
  • Landing page and form. A slow page or a long form raises cost per lead even when clicks are cheap.
  • Industry rules. Ads for housing, employment and financial products and services reaching Canada fall under Meta’s special ad categories, which remove age, gender and detailed demographic targeting and require a radius of at least 25 km around a location. That can raise cost per result for real estate, recruiting and lending.

How much budget do I need for Facebook or Instagram ads?

Work backwards from what a customer is worth, then give the campaign enough money to learn. A simple way to do it:

  1. Find your profit per new customer (average sale minus direct costs), counting repeat purchases if they are reliable.
  2. Find your close rate: of every 10 enquiries, how many become customers.
  3. Multiply profit per customer by close rate to get your break-even cost per lead. Aim to pay well below that.
  4. Set a test budget that can buy enough leads to judge: a few dozen leads, not three or four.

Example: a renovation company earns $2,000 profit on an average job and closes 2 out of 10 qualified leads. Break-even cost per lead is $2,000 times 0.2, or $400. If the company wants to keep most of that profit, it might target $100 to $150 per lead and plan a test budget that can produce around 20 leads at that cost before deciding whether to scale. The numbers are illustrative; use your own sale value and close rate.

What is a good cost per lead on Meta?

One that leaves you a profit after your close rate. A $200 lead is excellent for a business that earns $5,000 per customer and closes half its leads, and a $20 lead is too expensive for a $30 product. Track cost per lead and cost per customer by campaign, and judge Meta ads on customers, not on clicks or likes.

Is it worth running ads on Facebook and Instagram?

For many local and ecommerce businesses, yes, especially when people do not yet search for what you sell, when the product is visual, or when you want to reach past customers and website visitors again. Meta ads create demand; search ads catch demand that already exists. If customers usually search before they buy, compare with search advertising using the same cost-per-customer math. Our guide comparing Google Ads and Meta Ads for small business budgets walks through that choice.

Should I advertise on Facebook, Instagram or both?

Start with both and let the results show you. Meta’s automatic placements spread budget toward the placements that deliver your goal at the lowest cost, and you can later break results down by platform and placement in Ads Manager. Keep separate creative sizes for feed, Stories and Reels so each placement looks native.

Tips to lower your cost per result

  • Install the Meta pixel and send lead or purchase events properly, so the system learns from real outcomes.
  • Refresh creative every few weeks and test new hooks in the first second of video.
  • Match the landing page to the ad: same offer, same words, fast on a phone.
  • Use instant forms with a qualifying question when lead quality matters more than volume.
  • Reply to leads quickly, while people still remember filling in the form, and remember that follow-up marketing emails or texts need consent under Canada’s anti-spam law.
  • Exclude existing customers from prospecting campaigns, and retarget them with a separate message.

Frequently asked questions

How much do Facebook ads cost per month?

As much as the budget you set. You choose a daily or lifetime budget in Ads Manager, and Meta says it will not charge more than a lifetime budget unless you change delivery settings. Cost per click or lead varies with audience, goal and creative.

How much budget do I need for Instagram ads?

Work back from your profit per customer and close rate to a break-even cost per lead, then budget enough to buy a few dozen leads at your target cost before judging results.

What's the difference between CPM and CPC?

CPM is the cost per thousand impressions and CPC is the cost per click. Most Meta campaigns are billed on impressions, so CPC is a result you calculate by dividing spend by clicks.

Do Facebook and Instagram ads cost the same?

They run in the same Meta auction and are bought in the same Ads Manager, so pricing works the same way. Results by platform can differ, and you can compare them by placement.

What is a good cost per lead on Meta?

One that still leaves a profit after your close rate. Multiply profit per customer by your close rate to find your break-even cost per lead and aim well below it.

What drives the cost of Meta ads in Canada?

Audience size and competition, the season, your optimization goal, creative quality, landing page speed and form length, and special ad category rules for housing, employment and financial products.

Is it worth it to run ads on Facebook?

For many local and ecommerce businesses, yes, especially to create demand, sell visual products or reach past visitors. Judge it on cost per customer, and compare it with search ads when customers usually search first.

How can I advertise on Facebook?

Create a Meta business account and ad account, choose a campaign objective in Ads Manager, set the audience, budget and placements, upload creative and install the Meta pixel to track results.

What is the 20 percent rule on Facebook ads?

It was an old Facebook guideline that limited text to about 20 percent of an ad image. Meta dropped the rule, but short text on images still reads better in a busy feed.

Should I advertise on Facebook, Instagram or both?

Start with both through automatic placements, then check results by platform and placement and adjust creative for feed, Stories and Reels.
