How Much Does It Cost to Build an App in Canada? What Drives the Quote

This guide supports our app development services.

What drives the quote: a silver smartphone with stacked translucent interface layers floating above it, one red block glowing at the top beside turning gears

The cost to build an app in Canada depends on five things more than anything else: how many features and screens it has, whether it runs on iPhone, Android, the web or all three, what it connects to (payments, booking, a CRM, maps, other software), how much custom design it needs, and who builds it. A simple app with a few screens and no back end is a small project; an app with user accounts, payments, an admin dashboard and integrations is a large one. Beyond the build, plan for app store fees, hosting, updates and support every year. The rest of this guide explains each cost driver so you can compare quotes on the same terms.

This article describes what drives a quote. It does not list Canada Create’s prices; every project is quoted in writing after a consultation.

Features: the biggest single driver

Every feature needs design, code, testing and upkeep. A few examples of how features add up:

  • User accounts and log-in mean a back end, password resets, email verification and privacy controls.
  • Payments mean a payment provider, receipts, returns handling and sales tax rules for Canadian provinces.
  • Booking or scheduling means calendars, time zones, reminders and rescheduling logic.
  • Chat or messaging means real-time infrastructure, moderation and notifications.
  • Maps and location mean map services, permissions and battery-friendly tracking.
  • An admin dashboard lets your staff manage content, users and orders without a developer.

The quickest way to control cost is a first version that does one job very well, then adding features once real users show what they need.

Native vs cross-platform cost

  • Native apps (Swift for iPhone, Kotlin for Android) are built separately for each platform. They give the most direct access to device features and the most platform-specific feel, and they usually cost the most because there are two code bases to build and maintain.
  • Cross-platform apps (for example React Native or Flutter) share most of the code between iPhone and Android. For many business apps this lowers build and maintenance cost, with some extra work for device-specific features.
  • Web apps and progressive web apps run in the browser and can be installed on a phone’s home screen. They avoid app store review and fees but have less access to some device features and no app store listing.

Choose based on what the app must do on the device, who your users are and how long you will maintain it, as well as the first quote.

Ongoing costs after launch

Budget for these every year, separate from the build:

  • App store accounts. Apple lists the Apple Developer Program at $99 per year (US dollars), and Google Play charges a US$25 one-time registration fee.
  • App store commissions on paid apps and in-app purchases. Under Apple’s App Store Small Business Program, eligible developers with up to US$1 million in proceeds pay a 15 per cent commission. Google Play’s help page lists 15 per cent on the first US$1 million a developer earns each year and 15 per cent on auto-renewing subscriptions, and notes that updated fees are being rolled out, so check the current page. Physical goods and services sold through an app usually go through a regular payment processor instead.
  • Hosting and back-end services for databases, file storage, notifications and email, which grow with your number of users.
  • Updates. Apple and Google release new operating system versions every year, and apps need updates to keep working and to meet store requirements.
  • Bug fixes, security patches and support.
  • Third-party services such as maps, payments, analytics and SMS, often billed per use.

How long app development takes

Timelines follow the same drivers as cost. A focused first version with a few screens moves faster than an app with accounts, payments and integrations, and every round of changes after design approval adds time. Plan for discovery and design, development, testing on real devices, app store review and a period of fixes after launch. Ask each developer for a timeline broken into those phases so you can compare.

Canadian factors that affect the quote

  • French language. If you serve Quebec, plan for a French version of the app, the store listing and support content.
  • Privacy law. Apps that collect personal information must follow Canadian privacy law, and Quebec’s Law 25 adds rules such as tracking off by default. See our guide to Quebec Law 25.
  • Accessibility. Building to WCAG accessibility guidelines from the start costs less than fixing an app later, and Ontario organizations have AODA obligations.
  • Sales tax. Apps that sell goods or services need GST, HST, PST or QST handled correctly by province.
  • Data residency. Some health, finance and public sector clients want data stored in Canada, which narrows hosting choices.

How to get an accurate app development quote

  • Write a one-page brief: the problem, who uses the app, the three most important tasks, platforms, and any systems it must connect to.
  • Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves. Ask for the must-haves to be quoted first.
  • Ask what is included: design, back end, admin dashboard, testing, store submission, launch support, documentation.
  • Ask who owns the code, the store accounts and the cloud accounts. The answer should be you.
  • Ask about the yearly costs after launch as well as the build.
  • Compare like with like. A low quote often leaves out the back end, testing or store submission.

Getting your app found after launch is its own job; our app store optimization guide covers it. For the website side of a budget, see how much a website costs in Canada. Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to build an app in Canada?

It depends on the number of features and screens, the platforms (iPhone, Android, web), the back end and admin tools, integrations such as payments or booking, the level of custom design and who builds it. A small single-purpose app and a full platform with accounts and payments are very different projects, so get a written quote based on a clear brief.

What makes an app expensive?

User accounts, payments, real-time features such as chat, integrations with other systems, an admin dashboard, separate native apps for iPhone and Android, custom design, French and English versions, and strict security or privacy needs. Each adds design, development, testing and upkeep.

Is native or cross-platform cheaper?

Cross-platform development, such as React Native or Flutter, usually costs less to build and maintain because most of the code is shared between iPhone and Android. Native apps can make sense when the app depends heavily on device features or platform-specific performance.

How much does it cost to have someone build an app for you?

The price depends on scope and team. A freelancer may suit a narrow, well-defined app, while an app with a back end, integrations and ongoing updates usually needs a team covering design, development and testing. Compare quotes that include the same items: design, back end, testing, store submission and launch support.

How long does app development take?

It follows the same drivers as cost. A focused first version moves faster than an app with accounts, payments and integrations. Plan for discovery and design, development, testing on real devices, app store review and a period of fixes after launch.

What are the yearly costs of running an app?

App store accounts (Apple lists $99 US a year; Google Play charges a US$25 one-time fee), hosting and back-end services, third-party services such as maps or SMS, operating system updates, bug fixes, security patches and support.

Does Apple or Google take a cut of app sales?

Yes, on paid apps and in-app digital purchases. Apple's Small Business Program charges 15 per cent for eligible developers with up to US$1 million in proceeds, and Google Play's help page lists 15 per cent on the first US$1 million a developer earns each year. Check both pages for current rates.

What is the best app development platform?

There is no single best one. Swift and Kotlin suit native iPhone and Android apps, React Native and Flutter suit cross-platform apps, and a progressive web app suits simple tools that do not need an app store listing. The right choice depends on what the app must do and who will maintain it.

Does owning an app make money?

Only if it solves a problem people will pay for or saves your business money. Many business apps earn their keep indirectly, through repeat bookings, faster ordering or less staff time, more than through app store sales. Work out that value before deciding on the budget.

How can I lower the cost of building an app?

Start with a first version that does one job well, choose cross-platform or a web app where it fits, use standard design components, limit integrations to the essential ones and add features after real users show what they need.
