Claude search optimization
Be a source Claude can cite when your buyers research at work
SEO for Claude means preparing your website and listings so that Claude, Anthropic’s AI assistant, can find your business, understand it and cite it when it searches the web to answer someone’s question. Anthropic sells Claude to companies through Team and Enterprise plans as well as to individuals, so it is a common tool at work for researching suppliers, summarizing options and drafting recommendations. When a Toronto buyer asks Claude to compare providers or explain a requirement, the businesses it can cite are the ones whose pages its crawlers can reach and whose facts are clear.
This page covers Claude only: Anthropic’s three crawlers, how Claude’s web search shows sources, the access mistakes that hide sites from it, and how we measure it. The wider program, covering Google’s AI features and the other assistants, lives on our page about AI search optimization in Toronto.
Getting cited by Claude, not using Claude for SEO
Search “Claude SEO” and most results are about using Claude as a tool to do SEO work: writing briefs, analyzing pages or building scripts. That is a different topic. This page is about the other direction: how your business appears when other people use Claude to research a purchase. If you want to use AI tools in your own marketing, our guides to AI prompts for SEO and content are a better place to start.
How Claude finds information on the web
Anthropic’s help article on web search in Claude explains the basics. When a question benefits from current information, Claude invokes a search tool and grounds its answer in content from the live web. In the newer Claude experience there is no web search toggle: Claude searches the web when it helps. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner first enables web search for the whole workspace, under Organization settings and Capabilities, and members can then use it in their chats.
Anthropic says every response that uses web search includes citations, so readers can verify the sources. A response can include direct citations, source links for further reading and relevant quotes where appropriate. Claude can also fetch a specific page when a user provides its address, reading the full content of that page. The same article notes that when Claude shows pictures from the web, those image results come from Bing.
For a business, two things follow. Claude’s web answers point readers to the pages they relied on, so a cited page can earn a visit from someone deep in a decision. And any public page can be read in full when a user pastes its link, so what is on it needs to be accurate.

ClaudeBot, Claude-User and Claude-SearchBot
Anthropic documents three robots in its help article Does Anthropic crawl data from the web, and how can site owners block the crawler?, dated April 7, 2026 and checked November 3, 2026. Each one has a different job, and blocking each one has a different effect.
| Robot | What Anthropic says it does | What disabling it means, per Anthropic |
|---|---|---|
| ClaudeBot | Collects web content that could contribute to the training of Anthropic’s models | Signals that your site’s future materials should be excluded from training datasets |
| Claude-User | Fetches pages when people ask Claude questions | Prevents Claude from retrieving your content for user queries, which may reduce visibility in user-directed web search |
| Claude-SearchBot | Navigates the web to improve the quality of search results for users | Prevents indexing for search, which may reduce your visibility and accuracy in Claude’s search results |
The distinction matters because many sites block ClaudeBot on purpose, as a decision about AI training, and some block all three by accident through a broad “block AI bots” rule. Blocking ClaudeBot alone does not, by Anthropic’s description, stop Claude-User from retrieving your page for a user’s question or Claude-SearchBot from indexing it for search. Blocking Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User, on the other hand, is what reduces your visibility in Claude’s answers.
Choosing your settings
If you want Claude to cite you while keeping your content out of Anthropic’s training data, the settings look like this:
- Disallow ClaudeBot in robots.txt, if that is your training decision.
- Allow Claude-SearchBot, so your pages can be indexed for Claude’s search.
- Allow Claude-User, so Claude can read your pages when a user asks.
Whatever you choose, we record the decision and test it again whenever your site, host or security tools change.
Rules Anthropic says its robots follow
Anthropic’s article lists commitments that help when you configure access:
- Its bots honour industry-standard robots.txt directives.
- They support the non-standard Crawl-delay rule if you need to slow them down.
- They do not try to bypass CAPTCHAs.
- Opting out must be done in robots.txt, and for every subdomain you want covered.
- Blocking Anthropic’s IP addresses may not work reliably, because it stops the bots from reading your robots.txt in the first place.
That last point is easy to miss. If your firewall blocks Anthropic’s addresses, the bots cannot see your robots.txt preferences at all. Robots.txt is the supported control; IP blocks are not.

Common access mistakes that hide a site from Claude
When Claude never cites a business, the cause is often one of these:
- A blanket AI bot block. Some security plugins, CDNs and hosting panels offer a single switch to block “AI crawlers”. It usually catches Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User along with ClaudeBot.
- A robots.txt group that disallows everything except Googlebot. Some sites were set up this way years ago and never revisited.
- A subdomain left out. Anthropic says robots.txt rules must be set for every subdomain. A blog or booking system on a separate subdomain needs its own file.
- CAPTCHAs on every page. Anthropic’s bots do not bypass CAPTCHAs, so a site that challenges all visitors is unreadable to them.
- Key information behind scripts, images or PDFs. Text that a crawler cannot extract cannot be cited.
We check each of these from outside your site and in your logs, then fix the ones that apply.
What Claude can cite from your pages
Claude writes answers from passages it finds on the live web, and it shows citations. Pages that are easy to cite have a few things in common:
- They answer one question per section. A heading that names the question, followed by a direct answer in the first sentences, then the detail.
- They state facts plainly and specifically. Who you serve, where, what is included, what affects the price, how long it takes, what credentials apply, all in text.
- They show their reasoning. Claude is often asked to compare or explain. Pages that set out trade-offs, criteria and exceptions give it material for those answers.
- They are current and dated. A last reviewed date and up-to-date figures make a page more trustworthy to the person checking the citation.
- They link to official sources. When your page explains a rule, link to the regulator or government page so a reader can confirm it.
Claude at work: B2B and professional buyers
Claude’s Team and Enterprise plans put it in front of employees who research vendors as part of their job. Their prompts look like: “Summarize the main managed IT providers in the GTA that support healthcare clinics, with their certifications”, or “What does an Ontario company need to know before hiring a commercial cleaning contractor?” These are specific, commercial questions, and the answers draw on pages that cover:
- Service scope and fit: what you do, for which organizations and what is not included.
- Credentials and compliance: certifications, licences, insurance and privacy practices you actually hold.
- Process and timelines: how a project or onboarding works and how long each stage takes.
- Decision criteria: what a buyer should compare, written fairly.
If your buyers are businesses, these pages also serve your B2B SEO and your sales team.
Local questions in Claude
When a question is local, Claude’s web search looks for pages that tie businesses to that area, and Anthropic has not said which local databases it favours. So we give it no room for doubt: your location pages, Google Business Profile, Bing Places entry, Apple Maps card, Yelp page, BBB profile and trade directories all carry the same name, address, phone, hours and services. Because Claude’s image results come from Bing, accurate photos on your site and Bing-indexed pages help too. The groundwork is the same as local SEO in Toronto.
When a buyer pastes your link into Claude
Web fetch changes how buyers use your website. Anthropic says that when a user gives Claude a URL, Claude retrieves the full content of that page into the conversation so it can analyze or summarize it. A procurement manager can paste your services page and ask, “Summarize what this company offers and whether it fits a 40-person accounting firm.” A homeowner can paste your quote page and ask what is missing.
That makes the first screen of each important page more important than ever:
- Say what the page is about in the opening lines: the service, who it is for and where you offer it.
- Keep facts current, because Claude will repeat whatever the page says today, including an old price list or a discontinued service.
- Put contact details and next steps in text, so a summary includes how to reach you.
- Avoid hiding key content in tabs or accordions that only load with scripts. Content inside standard HTML is safer.
- Make long pages scannable with clear headings, so a summary picks out the right sections.
Anthropic also notes that on free accounts, a long page pasted into Claude can use a large share of the user’s usage limit. Clear, well-organized pages are easier and cheaper for people to work with.
A Claude access checklist for Toronto owners
These checks cover the Claude-specific basics and take an afternoon.
- Open robots.txt on your main domain and on every subdomain, and look for ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User and any rule that disallows all bots.
- Decide what you want for ClaudeBot (training), and make sure Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User are allowed if you want to be cited.
- Ask your host or developer whether a security plugin, CDN or hosting panel has a “block AI crawlers” switch turned on.
- Check whether visitors ever see a CAPTCHA on public pages. If they do, Anthropic’s bots will not get past it.
- Search your logs for Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User requests, and confirm they receive normal pages.
- Ask Claude, with web search on, three questions your buyers ask, and note who it cites.
- Paste your main service page into Claude and ask for a summary. If the summary is wrong or vague, the page is the problem.
How we measure visibility in Claude
There is no Anthropic dashboard that tells a site owner when Claude cited them, so we build the picture from five kinds of evidence:
- Tracked questions your buyers ask, run on a schedule with web search on, with the date and plan type recorded.
- Citations and mentions: your name in the answer, the links to your pages, and the competitors and outside sites listed beside you.
- Accuracy: every fact Claude states about you, checked against the truth.
- Crawler activity: requests from Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User in your server logs, which show whether Anthropic’s bots are reaching your pages.
- Referral visits from claude.ai, when analytics can attribute them, followed through to calls and forms.

How Claude fits with the other assistants
Claude’s settings are different from OpenAI’s and Perplexity’s, but the content and listings work is shared. For OpenAI’s crawlers, see ChatGPT SEO in Toronto; for Perplexity’s crawler and firewall rules, see Perplexity SEO in Toronto; for Bing, which powers Claude’s image results and Microsoft’s assistant, see Microsoft Copilot SEO in Toronto. Our AI SEO program in Toronto keeps them in one scope, on top of our SEO services in Toronto.
Before you start: questions owners ask
Is Claude worth optimizing for?
If your customers are companies or professionals, yes: Anthropic sells Claude for daily work, and its web answers carry citations that send readers to the sources. For a local consumer business, the crawler settings are worth fixing in any case, since they cost little; deeper content work can follow if Claude shows up in your referral data.
Can anyone promise that Claude will mention my business?
No. Claude decides what to search and cite for each question, and answers vary between users and sessions. What can be done is to make sure Anthropic’s search and user agents can read your pages, publish clear answers to the questions your buyers ask and keep your facts consistent, then report what changes.
How quickly do changes take effect?
Anthropic does not publish a timing for robots.txt changes. Once Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User can reach your pages, improvements can show up when Claude next searches for a related question. Independent mentions take longer. Each month we rerun the same questions and show you how the answers moved.

SEO for Claude in Toronto: questions buyers ask
How Claude finds sources
What is SEO for Claude?
SEO for Claude means preparing your site and listings so Claude can find, understand and cite your business when it searches the web. The work covers Anthropic's three crawlers, firewall and CAPTCHA checks, pages that answer buyer questions in plain text, consistent business details and regular checks of what Claude says.
Can Claude search the web?
Yes. Anthropic says Claude can search the internet for up-to-date information. In the newer Claude experience it searches whenever it helps, without a toggle. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner enables web search for the workspace first, under Organization settings and Capabilities.
Does Claude cite its sources?
Yes, when it uses web search. Anthropic says every response grounded in web search includes citations so readers can verify the sources, with direct citations, source links for further reading and relevant quotes where appropriate.
What is Claude web fetch?
Web fetch is Claude's ability to read a specific page when a user gives it the URL. Anthropic says Claude reads the whole page into the conversation so it can summarize or examine it. Any public page on your site can be read this way, so keep it accurate.
Does Claude use Google or Bing for search?
Anthropic's help article states that Claude's image results come from Bing. The same article does not name a provider for text search, and Anthropic runs its own Claude-SearchBot to improve search results. Being indexed in Bing and reachable by Claude-SearchBot are both worth securing.
Is Claude SEO about using Claude to do my SEO?
That is a different topic. Many people search Claude SEO to learn how to use Claude as a tool for SEO work. Our service is about the other direction: making sure your business is found and cited when your buyers use Claude to research a purchase.
Why would Claude recommend a competitor instead of my business?
Usually because the pages Claude found describe the competitor more clearly for that question, or because your site blocks Claude-SearchBot or Claude-User, hides facts in images or scripts, or challenges every visitor with a CAPTCHA. Checking the citations Claude shows reveals which applies.
Does Claude's free plan use web search?
Web search is available on Claude's plans, but Anthropic notes that free accounts have usage limits that reset every five hours, and that web search and web fetch both count toward them. Long pages pasted into a chat use more of that limit, so concise, well-organized pages are easier to work with.
Does Claude show images from my website?
When web search is on, Claude can show images in its answers, and Anthropic says those image results are powered by Bing, each with a source link. Original photos on pages that Bing has indexed, with descriptive file names and alt text, are the ones that can appear.
Anthropic crawlers
What is ClaudeBot?
ClaudeBot is Anthropic's crawler for collecting web content that could contribute to training its generative AI models. Anthropic says that restricting ClaudeBot signals that your site's future materials should be excluded from its training datasets. It is separate from the robots that serve search and user requests.
What is Claude-SearchBot?
Claude-SearchBot navigates the web to improve search result quality for Claude users. Anthropic says disabling it prevents your content from being indexed for search optimization, which may reduce your site's visibility and accuracy in user search results.
What is Claude-User?
Claude-User is the agent that visits a website when someone asks Claude a question that needs it. Anthropic says disabling it prevents Claude from retrieving your content for user queries, which may reduce your visibility for user-directed web search.
Does blocking ClaudeBot remove my site from Claude's answers?
Not by Anthropic's description. ClaudeBot relates to training; Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User relate to search and user requests, and each robot is controlled separately. If you want to appear in Claude's answers, allow Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User, whatever you decide about ClaudeBot.
How do I block ClaudeBot but stay visible in Claude?
In robots.txt, add a group for ClaudeBot with Disallow: / and leave Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User allowed. Repeat the file on every subdomain you want covered. Then check your firewall and CDN do not block Anthropic's other robots by a broader rule.
Do Anthropic's crawlers respect robots.txt?
Anthropic says its bots honour industry-standard robots.txt directives and respect anti-circumvention measures such as CAPTCHAs. It also supports the non-standard Crawl-delay extension. Robots.txt, set for each subdomain, is the opt-out method Anthropic documents.
Can I slow down ClaudeBot instead of blocking it?
Yes. Anthropic supports the non-standard Crawl-delay rule, for example a ClaudeBot group with Crawl-delay: 1. That limits how often the bot requests pages without removing your preference about training or search entirely.
Why should I not block Anthropic's IP addresses?
Anthropic says blocking its IP addresses may not work correctly or persistently, because it stops its bots from reading your robots.txt file. Without robots.txt, your preferences cannot be applied. Use robots.txt as the control, and keep firewalls from blocking the search and user agents you want.
Do I need separate robots.txt rules for my subdomains?
Yes. Anthropic says to set the robots.txt rules on every subdomain you want covered. A blog, shop or booking system on its own subdomain has its own robots.txt, so check each one matches your decision about ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User.
How do I know whether Anthropic's bots are reaching my site?
Search your server or CDN logs for the ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User user agents and check the responses they get. Anthropic says a crawler whose source IP is on its published list comes from Anthropic, which helps separate real requests from impostors.
Can a CAPTCHA stop Claude from reading my site?
Yes. Anthropic says its bots respect anti-circumvention technologies and will not try to bypass CAPTCHAs. A site that shows a challenge to every visitor, or to unfamiliar bots, may be unreadable to Claude. Limit challenges to forms and logins rather than whole pages.
Does Anthropic publish the IP addresses of its crawlers?
Yes. Anthropic's crawler article links to a list and says that a crawler whose source IP is on it comes from Anthropic. Use the list to confirm genuine requests in your logs, but control access with robots.txt, since Anthropic says IP blocking may not work reliably.
Getting cited
How do I get my business cited by Claude?
Allow Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User, remove CAPTCHAs and blanket AI bot blocks from public pages, publish clear answers to your buyers' questions in text, keep your business details identical across listings and earn mentions on independent sites. Then track your key questions to see whether Claude cites you.
What kind of pages does Claude cite?
Pages that answer a specific question directly, state facts in text, explain trade-offs fairly and stay current. Claude is often asked to compare and explain, so comparison, requirement and process pages are useful sources, as long as they are accurate and specific.
Does Claude read PDFs and images on my site?
Plain HTML text is the format every crawler handles best. Information that sits only in a picture, a scanned PDF or a section that loads with scripts may never be extracted, so it cannot be quoted. Keep the key facts on the page as text and use images to illustrate them.
Do listings and reviews matter for Claude?
Anthropic does not publish which sources Claude prefers, but independent listings, associations and review sites are the kind of pages answer engines read when they compare businesses. Keep your listings accurate and consistent, and collect genuine reviews within each platform's rules.
Does Claude use schema markup?
Anthropic does not say how Claude treats structured data. Schema that matches the page still helps search engines, so keep it, but write the page so that its visible text alone tells Claude everything it needs to quote you.
Should I write pages differently for Claude?
No special style is needed. Clear headings phrased as questions, a direct answer at the start of each section, specific facts and links to official sources help Claude cite you accurately, and they help human readers and every other search engine too.
What if Claude gets facts about my business wrong?
Check the citations Claude shows for the wrong fact, correct your own page or the third-party listing it came from, and keep Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User allowed so Claude can read the corrected version. Then ask the same question again in a new chat after a while.
What does Claude read when someone pastes my page's URL?
Anthropic says web fetch retrieves the full content of the page into Claude's context. Claude can then summarize it or answer questions about it. Make sure the opening lines say what you offer, who it is for and where, and that prices, services and contact details are current.
Should my pages start with a summary for Claude?
A short opening that states the service, the audience and the area helps every reader, including Claude when it summarizes a page. It does not need a special format; a clear first paragraph under a descriptive heading does the job.
Work and B2B use
Is Claude used by businesses in Canada?
Anthropic offers Claude to organizations through Team and Enterprise plans, with workspace-level controls such as enabling web search. That makes Claude a research tool inside many companies, which matters if you sell to businesses or professionals.
Do Team and Enterprise users of Claude see web results?
They can, once an owner or primary owner enables web search for the workspace in Organization settings and Capabilities. Members can then use web search in their chats. Their research questions are often commercial, such as comparing vendors or checking requirements.
What do B2B buyers ask Claude about suppliers?
Typically specific questions: which providers in the GTA serve a particular sector, what certifications they hold, how onboarding works, how long a project takes and what to compare. Pages that answer those questions plainly, with facts you can stand behind, are the ones Claude can cite.
Can professional firms in Ontario be cited by Claude?
Yes, within their regulator's advertising rules. Clear, factual pages on what a process involves, what clients need to prepare and how long it takes, written by named professionals and linked to official sources, are useful to Claude. Claims your regulator restricts stay out.
Does Claude matter for local consumer businesses?
Less than Google or ChatGPT for most local consumer businesses, but the crawler settings are worth getting right because they cost little. If your referral data shows visits from claude.ai, or your buyers are professionals, deeper content work for Claude becomes worthwhile.
Measuring results
How can I tell whether Claude is citing my business?
Pick the questions your buyers ask and put them to Claude with web search on, every month, noting the date and plan type, whether your business appears and which of your pages are linked. Single answers vary; the record over several months is what tells you where you stand.
Does Anthropic offer a report for site owners?
Anthropic does not document a citation report for site owners. Measurement relies on tracked questions, the citations Claude shows, your server logs for Anthropic's user agents and referral visits in your analytics.
Can I see visits from Claude in my analytics?
Sometimes. A click from claude.ai is reported as a referral when the browser shares where it came from, and as direct traffic when it does not, so the referral count understates the real number. We report it as its own line and tie it to enquiries where the tracking allows.
Why do Claude's answers about my business vary?
Claude chooses for each question whether to search and what to cite, and the exact wording, earlier messages and workspace settings all shift the outcome. Our checks keep the same questions and conditions each month so the comparison is fair.
What should I look for in my server logs?
Requests from Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User that return full pages, not errors, redirects to a login or challenge screens. Regular Claude-SearchBot visits to your important pages are a good sign that Claude's search can see them.
Can I test how Claude summarizes my website?
Yes. Paste your main service page into Claude and ask for a summary of what your business offers and who it suits. If the summary is wrong, vague or misses something important, the page needs clearer wording or better structure.
Working with us
What does SEO for Claude include at Canada Create?
A Claude visibility audit, a review of robots.txt for ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User on every subdomain, firewall, CDN and CAPTCHA checks, log monitoring, citable service and comparison pages, listing and mention work, and monthly reporting on citations, accuracy, crawler activity and enquiries.
How much does SEO for Claude cost in Toronto?
The fee depends on your site, how many services and questions you want covered and how much access and content work is needed. After a free consultation we send a custom proposal with the fees in writing; third-party costs, if any, are itemized.
How long does SEO for Claude take?
Crawler and firewall changes are normally finished early in the engagement. Anthropic does not publish how fast it reacts to robots.txt updates, and citations follow how Claude answers questions in your field, which changes more gradually. The monthly checks show progress.
Is SEO for Claude separate from my other AI search work?
The Anthropic crawler settings and Claude tracking are specific to Claude, but the content and listing work is shared with ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI features. We run it inside one AI search scope so nothing is done twice.
Can I do SEO for Claude myself?
You can handle the basics: review robots.txt for Anthropic's three robots on each subdomain, remove site-wide CAPTCHAs, check your logs and ask Claude your buyers' questions monthly. Help is useful when firewalls, subdomains or larger content gaps are involved.
Do I need SEO for Claude if I already allow AI crawlers?
Allowing crawlers is the first step, not the whole job. Claude still needs clear pages to cite, consistent facts and independent mentions, and a broad allow rule can be undone by a CDN or CAPTCHA setting. An audit confirms what Claude actually sees.

Can Claude read your website at all?
A single "block AI bots" switch can stop Claude's search and user agents along with its training crawler. Check what Anthropic's robots see before anything else.
