Shopify SEO guide
Shopify SEO, explained for store owners
Shopify SEO services in Toronto for stores that want more orders from search. Shopify SEO is the work that helps a Shopify store’s collection, product and blog pages rank when shoppers search for what it sells: collection structure, product content, duplicate product URLs, theme speed and apps, structured data, Shopify Markets for English, French and other markets, and reporting on organic orders. Canada Create is a Shopify Partner and a Toronto SEO agency in business since 2008, BBB Accredited with an A+ rating, working from 126 Willowdale Ave., Suite #3, Toronto.
Shopify gives every store a solid technical base: hosting, an SSL certificate, an automatic XML sitemap, editable titles and descriptions, and a content delivery network that serves images quickly. It also has habits that hold stores back if nobody handles them. Our Shopify SEO work covers both:
- Collections: structure, H1s, introductions, buying guidance and internal links for the collections closest to revenue.
- Products: titles, descriptions, images, variants, reviews and structured data, starting with the products that already sell.
- Duplicate URLs: product links that run through /collections/ paths, tag and filter pages, and variant parameters.
- Theme and apps: speed, Core Web Vitals and the scripts each app adds to every page.
- Shopify Markets and languages: English and French versions, currencies and hreflang.
- Migrations: redirects and content carried over when a store moves to Shopify or changes theme.
- Reporting: organic orders and revenue by collection, product and guide.
This page covers Shopify specifically. For stores on WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento or custom platforms, our ecommerce SEO agency service applies the same principles to your platform. To build or redesign a store, see our Shopify development agency.
What Shopify does for SEO out of the box
Shopify handles much of the technical foundation that other platforms leave to the store owner, which is one reason it suits growing stores:
- An XML sitemap at /sitemap.xml, updated automatically as products, collections, pages and blog posts are added or removed.
- A default robots.txt that keeps checkout, cart, account and internal search pages out of the index, editable through the robots.txt.liquid template when a store needs custom rules.
- Canonical tags on product pages that point to the main /products/ URL.
- Editable page titles, meta descriptions and URL handles for every product, collection, page and article, in the “search engine listing” section of each item.
- Image alt text fields, and images served through Shopify’s content delivery network in modern formats.
- Automatic redirects when a URL handle is changed, if the redirect box is ticked, plus a URL redirect tool for bulk imports.
- Themes that output basic product structured data.
What Shopify does not do is decide your collection structure, write useful product copy, control which filter and tag pages get indexed, keep apps from slowing the theme, or set up markets and languages properly. That is where Shopify SEO work starts.
Shopify collection SEO
Collections are usually the most valuable pages in a Shopify store, because most buying searches are category searches: “women’s winter boots”, “standing desk Canada”, “organic coffee beans”. A strong collection page has an H1 that matches the search, a short introduction above the products that helps shoppers choose, buying guidance and FAQs below the grid, filters that help without creating thousands of indexable URLs, and links to related collections and best sellers.
Planning collections around how people shop
Start from the way customers shop, not from your supplier list or your internal product types. Group products into a small number of main collections, then add sub-collections where shoppers genuinely narrow their choice. Shopify collections are flat, so the hierarchy comes from navigation, breadcrumbs and links between collections. Automated collections built on tags or product types save time, but each one that is published becomes a page Google can find; publish only those worth ranking.
Collection descriptions and templates
Many Shopify themes show the collection description above the grid only, or not at all. We adjust the collection template so a short introduction sits above the products and fuller guidance sits below them, using metafields where needed, without pushing the products off the first screen on phones.
Tags, filters and the Search & Discovery app
Shopify can create a URL for every tag filter on a collection, such as /collections/boots/black. A handful of these match real searches; most are thin duplicates. Filters built with the Search & Discovery app use URL parameters, which are less likely to be indexed but still worth controlling. We decide which filtered views deserve a real collection of their own, and keep the rest out of the index with canonicals, robots rules and internal link choices. Search & Discovery also manages synonyms, product recommendations and boosted results for on-site search, which helps shoppers find the right product once they land.
Duplicate product URLs on Shopify
The best-known Shopify SEO issue is that a product can be reached at its main address, /products/blue-wool-toque, and also through every collection it belongs to, such as /collections/winter-accessories/products/blue-wool-toque. Shopify’s canonical tag points those collection paths to the main product URL, which prevents the worst damage. The problem is that many themes link to the collection path from the product grid, so Google keeps finding and crawling the duplicates and internal link value is split across them.
The fix is a theme change: product grids and related product blocks should link straight to the main /products/ URL. We make that change in the theme, test it, and then watch Search Console to confirm Google has settled on the right URLs. Variant links with ?variant= parameters, /collections/all, sorting parameters and paginated collection pages get the same review.
Shopify product page SEO
Product pages win brand and model searches and close the sale. On Shopify they are built from the product template, so a single template improvement reaches every product.
Titles, descriptions and handles
The product title becomes the H1 and, by default, the start of the page title. Product titles should carry the words shoppers search: brand, product type, model and key attribute. The search engine listing lets you write a different page title and meta description where that reads better in results. Handles should be short and readable; set them before launch, because changing them later means redirects.
Supplier descriptions appear on every competing store. Start with the products that already bring revenue or impressions and add what the supplier text leaves out: fit and sizing notes, materials and care, what is in the box, compatibility, and how the item suits Canadian winters or delivery times. A consistent description template per product type, using metafields for specifications, keeps the work fast without producing identical pages.
Variants
Colours and sizes of the same product belong on one product with variants, so links and reviews build up on one URL. Products people search for separately, such as different models, are better as separate products. When a variant needs to rank on its own, such as a colour people search by name, we look at whether a separate product or a dedicated collection serves that search better.
Images
Shopify serves images in efficient formats through its content delivery network, but large original uploads, missing alt text and long galleries still slow product pages. Use several angles plus scale and in-use shots, descriptive file names before upload, and alt text that says what the image shows.
Reviews and structured data
Product reviews from a reviews app add specific language and can feed review information into structured data. Many themes and apps each output their own product markup, which can leave a page with two conflicting sets. We check the rendered structured data on product and collection templates, remove duplicates and make sure price, currency, availability, brand, identifiers such as GTINs and reviews match what the page shows. Reviews must be genuine; we do not create or buy them.
Out-of-stock and discontinued products
Keep products visible during a temporary stockout, with a notify-me option or alternatives, rather than hiding them and losing their rankings. When a product is discontinued, redirect it to a genuine replacement or its collection with Shopify’s URL redirect tool. If nothing equivalent exists, leaving it to return a 404 is better than sending shoppers somewhere unrelated.
Shopify theme speed and apps
Shopify’s hosting is fast; what slows most Shopify stores is the theme and the apps. Each app can add scripts and styles to every page, and uninstalled apps sometimes leave code behind in the theme. Large hero sliders, autoplay video, chat widgets, review carousels, pop-ups and tracking tags all compete for the first seconds of loading on a phone.
Our speed work measures the home, collection and product templates on mobile, lists what every app and script costs, removes leftovers from uninstalled apps, replaces heavy apps where the theme can do the job, defers what is not needed for the first screen, and tests checkout, tracking and reviews after every change. Online Store 2.0 themes with app blocks make this easier than older themes, so a theme update is sometimes part of the recommendation, scoped as a project.
Shopify Markets, French and international SEO
Many Canadian stores sell in English and French, and into the United States. Shopify Markets lets one store serve several countries and languages with their own currencies, prices and domains or subfolders, such as /fr-ca/ for Canadian French. When markets and languages are set up correctly, Shopify adds hreflang tags so search engines show each version to the right shoppers.
The setup decisions matter: subfolders or separate domains, which markets get their own language, how prices and duties show in each currency, and how translations are produced. Shopify’s translation tools can generate a first draft, but Canadian French product pages should be written or reviewed by people for Canadian shoppers, not left as machine translation. Where Quebec’s Charter of the French Language applies to your business, a complete French shopping experience is part of the requirement; your qualified adviser confirms the obligations. Our multilingual SEO service covers the language work in depth.
The Shopify blog and content
Shopify’s blog is simpler than WordPress: blogs, articles and tags, with fewer layout options. It is enough for buying guides, comparisons, size guides and how-to articles that answer the questions shoppers ask before buying. Each article should link to the collections and products it discusses, and those collections should link back to the guide.
Seasonal content works best on permanent URLs updated every year: a Black Friday or holiday gift collection that stays live with a note between events earns more over time than a new page every season. Where a store needs richer content pages, we build them with metaobjects and section templates rather than a page builder app that slows the theme.
Moving to Shopify without losing rankings
Many stores come to Shopify from WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, Wix or Squarespace. Shopify’s fixed URL structure (/products/, /collections/, /pages/, /blogs/) means almost every old URL changes, so a migration without a redirect map can lose years of rankings in a week.
A safe migration maps every old product, category, page, blog post and important image URL to its new Shopify address and imports the redirects in bulk, carries over titles, descriptions, copy, alt text and structured data, keeps the same main navigation where it worked, and is checked in the new store before launch. After launch we watch Search Console for crawl errors, redirect gaps and indexing changes, and fix them quickly. Our Shopify development team handles the build; the SEO work makes sure the move does not cost you the traffic you already had. Our guide to traffic drops after a website migration explains what to check.
Shopify Plus and larger stores
Shopify Plus adds features that matter for larger stores: expansion stores for separate regions or brands, B2B catalogues and price lists, checkout extensibility and more automation. From an SEO point of view, the main decisions are whether to serve several countries from one store with Markets or from separate expansion stores, how B2B pages stay out of the public index where pricing is private, and how to keep large catalogues crawlable. Our Shopify B2B page covers wholesale setups.
Google Merchant Center, free listings and AI shopping answers
Shopify’s Google and YouTube channel connects your products to Google Merchant Center, so eligible products can appear in free listings across Google as well as Shopping ads. Results depend on clean product data: titles, prices and availability that match the product page, identifiers such as GTINs where products have them, correct shipping settings and main images without promotional text. We check the diagnostics, fix disapproved products and keep the feed consistent with the store.
The same product data, structured data and reviews help AI Overviews, AI Mode and shopping assistants describe your products correctly. When AI visibility is a priority in itself, see our AI SEO and AI search optimization service. Paid Shopping campaigns are run by our Shopify advertising team and quoted separately.
Shopify SEO apps: what they can and cannot do
SEO apps can help with bulk editing of titles and alt text, broken link reports, structured data and image compression. None of them can decide your collection structure, write product copy shoppers trust, or remove the duplicate links built into your theme. Several apps doing overlapping jobs can also slow the store and output conflicting structured data. We prefer fixing things in the theme where possible and keeping only the apps that earn their place.
Common Shopify SEO mistakes we fix
- Product grids linking to /collections/…/products/… paths instead of the main product URL.
- Dozens of thin tag pages and automated collections open to the index.
- Collection pages with no introduction or buying guidance, only a product grid.
- Supplier descriptions copied across the catalogue.
- Apps uninstalled but their code left in the theme, slowing every page.
- Two or three sets of product structured data from the theme and several apps.
- Handles changed without redirects, or a migration launched without a redirect map.
- French versions published as unchecked machine translation.
- Products hidden when out of stock, losing their rankings each time.
- Analytics that do not report organic orders and revenue by landing page.
What a Shopify SEO engagement includes
Each engagement follows the same order, because each stage depends on the one before it:
- Store audit: crawl, Search Console, analytics, theme, apps, structured data, Markets setup and product feed, with findings ranked by likely revenue impact.
- Theme and technical fixes: duplicate product links, tag and filter indexing, speed, structured data and redirects.
- Collections first: the collections closest to revenue get their structure, copy and internal links.
- Products next: best sellers and high-impression products get rewritten titles, descriptions and specifications.
- Content and authority: buying guides, seasonal pages, reviews and earned links.
- Reporting and review: organic orders and revenue by collection, product and guide each month, and next month’s priorities.

Shopify SEO is custom-scoped after a free consultation and quoted in writing. Shopify SEO in Toronto: questions store owners ask
Shopify SEO: the basics
What is Shopify SEO?
Shopify SEO is search engine optimization for stores built on Shopify: improving collections, products, the theme, apps, structured data and markets so the store ranks when shoppers search for what it sells. It uses the same principles as any ecommerce SEO, applied to how Shopify builds pages and URLs.
Is Shopify good for SEO?
Yes. Shopify provides fast hosting, an automatic sitemap, canonical tags, editable titles and descriptions, and an image delivery network. Stores still need to handle duplicate product links, thin tag pages, app scripts and collection content, which is where most Shopify SEO work goes.
Does Shopify have built-in SEO?
Shopify has built-in SEO basics: editable page titles, meta descriptions and URL handles, alt text fields, an automatic XML sitemap, a default robots.txt, canonical tags and automatic redirects when handles change. It does not plan your collections, write your copy or control app bloat for you.
Can you do SEO on Shopify?
Yes. Almost everything that matters can be done in the Shopify admin and theme: titles, descriptions, handles, collection copy, product content, redirects, robots.txt rules, structured data and speed fixes. A few URL patterns are fixed by the platform and need workarounds rather than changes.
What do Shopify SEO services include?
An audit of the store, theme and apps; collection structure and copy; product titles, descriptions, images and structured data; fixes for duplicate product links and tag pages; speed work; Shopify Markets and French setup; migration redirects; Merchant Center feed checks; buying guides and links; and reporting on organic orders.
What is the difference between Shopify SEO and ecommerce SEO?
Ecommerce SEO covers every store platform. Shopify SEO applies the same work to Shopify's specific features and limits, such as /collections/ product paths, tag filters, theme templates, apps and Shopify Markets. Stores on other platforms are covered by our ecommerce SEO agency service.
How to do SEO on your Shopify store
How do I do SEO on my Shopify store?
Start with your main collections: clear H1s, a short introduction and buying guidance. Make product grids link to the main /products/ URL, keep thin tag pages out of the index, rewrite descriptions for best sellers, check structured data, remove unused app code, connect Search Console and track organic revenue. Our Shopify and ecommerce SEO guide covers each step.
How do I add SEO keywords to Shopify?
Use the words shoppers search in the product or collection title, the page title and meta description in the search engine listing section, the URL handle, the first lines of the description and the image alt text. Write naturally for shoppers; Shopify has no separate keyword field that affects Google.
How do I change the SEO title and meta description on Shopify?
Open the product, collection, page or blog post in the admin, scroll to the search engine listing section, click edit and change the page title, meta description and URL handle. For the home page, use the online store preferences. Ticking the redirect box when changing a handle keeps old links working.
How do I optimize Shopify collection pages?
Give each main collection an H1 that matches the search, a short introduction above the products, buying guidance and FAQs below the grid, and links to related collections. Publish only collections worth ranking, and adjust the theme template so the copy displays well on phones.
How do I optimize Shopify product pages?
Use clear product titles with brand, type and key attribute, original descriptions with specifications in text, several compressed images with descriptive alt text, genuine reviews, and accurate structured data. Start with the products that already bring revenue or impressions.
Do Shopify tags help SEO?
Rarely as pages of their own. Tag filters create URLs with only a few products that seldom help shoppers and can dilute your main collections. Use tags for filtering and organization, and give real collections to the groupings people actually search for.
Should I write a blog on Shopify for SEO?
Yes, when the articles answer questions shoppers ask before buying, such as buying guides, comparisons and size guides, and link to the collections and products they discuss. Articles unrelated to what you sell rarely bring buyers.
How do I submit my Shopify sitemap to Google?
Shopify generates the sitemap at yourstore.com/sitemap.xml. Verify your domain in Google Search Console, open the sitemaps report and submit that address. Search Console then shows how many listed pages Google has indexed and flags problems.
Does Shopify automatically create a sitemap?
Yes. Shopify generates an XML sitemap at /sitemap.xml that lists products, collections, pages and blog posts and updates as they change. You cannot edit it directly, so hidden or thin pages are kept out by unpublishing them or managing their indexing in the theme.
What is a good Shopify SEO checklist?
Collections with H1s and copy, product grids linking to /products/ URLs, thin tag pages kept out of the index, original descriptions for best sellers, one clean set of structured data, unused app code removed, Markets and hreflang set up, Search Console and Merchant Center connected, and organic revenue tracked.
Can Shopify stores rank against Amazon and big retailers?
Yes, for the searches where you have a real edge: a specialist range, better product information, Canadian stock and delivery, or a niche the big sites cover thinly. Broad commodity searches are harder. Collection pages and buying guides are where specialist stores usually win.
How long does Shopify SEO take to work?
Theme fixes and improvements to pages already ranking on page two can show within a few months. New collections, content and links usually take longer, especially against marketplaces and large retailers. The schedule in your proposal sets out what is delivered when.
Technical Shopify SEO
Why does Shopify create duplicate product URLs?
Shopify makes each product available at /products/handle and through every collection it belongs to, at /collections/name/products/handle. The canonical tag points to the main URL, but many themes link to the collection paths, so Google keeps crawling duplicates. A theme change that links straight to /products/ fixes it.
Can I edit robots.txt on Shopify?
Yes. Shopify lets you customize robots.txt through a robots.txt.liquid theme template. The default rules already block checkout, cart and internal search pages, so most stores need only small changes, such as blocking specific filter parameters. Mistakes here can block important pages, so changes need testing.
Can I change Shopify URL structure?
Not the prefixes: products always sit under /products/, collections under /collections/, pages under /pages/ and blog posts under /blogs/. You can change each handle after the prefix. Search engines rank Shopify stores well with this structure; clear handles and good internal links matter more.
How do I set up redirects on Shopify?
Shopify creates a redirect automatically when you change a handle with the redirect box ticked. For other cases, use the URL redirects tool in the admin, which accepts single redirects and bulk CSV imports. Every redirect should go straight to the final URL in one hop.
Do Shopify apps slow down my store?
Many do. Each app can add scripts and styles to every page, and uninstalled apps sometimes leave code in the theme. Measuring what each app costs on mobile and removing leftovers or replacing heavy apps with theme features is often the quickest speed gain.
Does my Shopify theme affect SEO?
Yes. The theme controls headings, how product grids link, where collection copy appears, structured data output and much of the page speed. Online Store 2.0 themes with app blocks are generally easier to keep fast and well structured than older themes.
Does changing my Shopify theme affect SEO?
It can. A new theme may change headings, collection layouts, structured data and speed, though URLs normally stay the same. Check the new theme in preview for headings, copy placement, product links and markup before publishing, and watch Search Console afterwards.
How do I fix Shopify structured data problems?
Check the rendered product and collection pages with Google's rich results test. Many stores have markup from the theme and from one or more apps, which can conflict. Keep one complete set that matches the page, with price, currency, availability, brand, identifiers and genuine reviews.
How does Shopify handle product variants for SEO?
Variants share one product page, with a ?variant= parameter for each option and a canonical to the main product URL. That keeps links and reviews on one page. Products people search for separately, such as different models, are better set up as separate products.
How should I handle out-of-stock products on Shopify?
Keep them published during a temporary stockout, with a notify-me option or alternatives, so their rankings survive. Redirect discontinued products to a genuine replacement or their collection; if nothing fits, a 404 is better than an unrelated redirect.
Does Shopify compress images for SEO?
Shopify serves images through its content delivery network and in efficient formats for each browser, which helps speed. Large originals, long galleries and missing alt text still slow pages or waste search value, so upload sensibly sized images with descriptive names and alt text.
Shopify Markets, French and migrations
How do I set up a French version of my Shopify store?
Add French as a language and assign it to your Canadian market in Shopify Markets, which publishes it in a subfolder such as /fr-ca/ and adds hreflang tags. Translate product, collection, page and policy content, and have Canadian French reviewed by people rather than relying on machine translation.
Does Shopify Markets help international SEO?
Yes, when set up correctly. Markets gives each country or language its own subfolder or domain, currency and prices, and Shopify adds hreflang tags so search engines show the right version. Decisions about which markets get their own language and content still need planning.
Will I lose SEO if I move my store to Shopify?
Not if the move is planned. Because Shopify's URL structure differs from other platforms, every old product, category, page and post URL needs a one-hop 301 redirect to its new address, and titles, copy and structured data need carrying over. Check Search Console closely after launch.
How do I migrate from WooCommerce to Shopify without losing rankings?
Export every WooCommerce product, category, page and post URL, map each to its new Shopify URL, import the redirects in bulk, carry over titles, descriptions and content, and test the new store before launch. After launch, fix any crawl errors and redirect gaps quickly.
Is Shopify Plus better for SEO?
Not on its own; standard Shopify and Shopify Plus use the same storefront and URL structure. Plus adds expansion stores, B2B features and checkout flexibility, which matter for larger and international stores. The SEO decisions are about how those features are set up.
Apps, tools, feeds and AI
Which SEO app is best for Shopify?
There is no single best app, and many stores need fewer than they think. Apps help with bulk editing, alt text, broken links and structured data, but none can fix collection structure, product copy or duplicate theme links. Choose apps for a specific job and remove any that overlap or slow the store.
Does Shopify have an SEO tool?
Shopify includes the basic fields and settings, and its admin flags some missing titles and descriptions. The Search & Discovery app manages filters, synonyms and recommendations for on-site search. For crawling, rankings and indexing, Google Search Console is the free tool every store should connect.
What is the Search & Discovery app used for?
It is Shopify's free app for on-site search and filtering: product filters, search synonyms, boosted results and product recommendations. It helps shoppers find products once they land. Its filter URLs use parameters, which should be managed so they do not become thousands of indexed pages.
How do I get Shopify products into Google free listings?
Install Shopify's Google and YouTube channel, connect Merchant Center and sync your products. Keep titles, prices, availability, identifiers and images accurate and matching the store, and check the Merchant Center diagnostics for disapproved products. Display is decided by Google.
Can AI shopping answers recommend my Shopify store?
AI Overviews, AI Mode and assistants such as ChatGPT can suggest products and stores, drawing on product pages, structured data, reviews, product feeds and mentions on review sites. Accurate, consistent product information improves the chance of being described correctly; no one can promise a recommendation.
Can ChatGPT do SEO for my Shopify store?
It can draft product descriptions, suggest collection ideas and outline guides, but it cannot see your Search Console data, edit your theme, fix duplicate links or earn links. Everything it writes needs checking against your real product facts before publishing.
Is SEO dead for Shopify stores now that AI answers questions?
No. Shoppers still search, compare and click to buy, and AI answers draw on the same product pages, structured data and reviews that SEO improves. The work now includes product data and AI visibility alongside collections and products.
Cost and choosing a Shopify SEO agency
How much does Shopify SEO cost?
It depends on the number of products and collections, the condition of the theme and apps, competition in your categories, the markets and languages you sell into, how much copy is needed and whether a migration is involved. We do not publish price lists; after a free consultation you receive a custom proposal with fees quoted in writing.
Do you sell Shopify SEO packages?
No fixed packages. Every store has a different catalogue, theme and starting point, so the scope is built around yours and quoted in writing after discovery.
Is it worth paying for Shopify SEO?
It is worth it when shoppers search for what you sell, your store has fixable gaps in structure, content or speed, and your team does not have the time to close them. A free review of your store shows the size of the opportunity before you decide.
Can I do Shopify SEO myself?
Yes, for the basics: titles and descriptions, collection copy, product descriptions, alt text and Search Console. Outside help pays when the problems sit in the theme code, the catalogue is large, a migration is coming or competitors are far ahead.
What should I look for in a Shopify SEO agency?
Look for hands-on work inside Shopify themes, a clear answer on duplicate product links, tags and apps, experience with Shopify Markets and migrations, reporting on organic revenue, accounts kept in your name and genuine client reviews. Be wary of ranking promises.
Are you a Shopify Partner?
Yes. Canada Create is a Shopify Partner, and our team builds, redesigns and optimizes Shopify stores for businesses in Toronto and across Canada.
Do you also build Shopify stores?
Yes. Our Shopify development agency builds and redesigns stores, with SEO planned in from the start so collections, templates and redirects are right at launch.
Do I need to give you my Shopify login?
No. You add us as a collaborator with the permissions you choose, and you can remove access at any time. Your store, domain and accounts stay in your name.
Can a Shopify SEO agency promise first place on Google?
No. Google states that no one can promise a top ranking, and marketplaces and large retailers compete for the same searches. A responsible agency agrees the work to be delivered and reports honestly on the orders it produces.
