What changes when your Shopify marketing runs as one system

Numbers you can trust

Server-side tracking and deduplication mean ad platforms and Shopify finally agree on what sold.

Spend follows margin

Campaigns are split by product economics, so budget flows to products that make money.

More new customers

Prospecting is measured on new-customer revenue, not on reselling to people already on your list.

Customers who come back

Email, SMS and organic search bring buyers back without paying for the same customer twice.

Summary: Shopify advertising works when three things are in place before any budget goes out: clean conversion tracking, a product feed that Google and Meta can trust, and a clear break-even number for every product you promote. Canada Create™ runs Shopify advertising and ecommerce marketing as one system, covering Google Shopping and Performance Max, Meta, TikTok, Shopify’s own Shop Campaigns, SEO and email, so every dollar is judged against profit per order rather than clicks or platform-reported ROAS. We have done this work since 2008 for businesses across Canada and the United States.

What Shopify advertising covers in 2026

Shopify advertising is any paid placement that sends shoppers to a Shopify store or to Shopify’s own checkout. Most store owners picture Facebook ads, but the real mix is wider: Google Shopping and Performance Max, Meta (Facebook and Instagram), TikTok, Pinterest, YouTube, Microsoft Advertising, and Shopify’s own Shop Campaigns inside the Shop app network.

Shopify marketing is the bigger picture around those ads. It includes search engine optimization for collection and product pages, email and SMS flows, reviews, on-site conversion work and the analytics that ties it together. Paid ads buy attention. Marketing decides whether that attention turns into a profitable first order and a second one.

Paid, owned and earned channels

Paid channels are the ones you rent by the click, impression or acquisition. Owned channels are your store, your email list and your SMS list. Earned channels are reviews, organic search rankings and word of mouth. A healthy Shopify brand uses paid media to fill owned channels, then lets owned channels bring customers back at a much lower cost.

Why the Shopify results you see online are confusing

Many of the top search results for Shopify advertising describe ads that app developers buy inside the Shopify App Store. Those ads help app companies reach merchants. They do nothing for a store owner selling products to shoppers. If you run a store, the channels that matter are the ones listed above.

How ecommerce marketing differs from lead generation

Ecommerce marketing is judged on completed purchases and margin, while lead generation is judged on form fills and calls. That difference changes almost every decision an agency makes on your account.

  • The conversion happens on your site. Checkout speed, shipping cost, return policy and payment options decide the result as much as the ad does.
  • Every product has its own economics. A $30 accessory and a $600 bundle cannot share one target ROAS.
  • The feed is the ad. Shopping and Performance Max build ads from your product titles, images and prices, so data quality is creative quality.
  • Repeat purchase matters. A first order can break even and still be a good buy if customers reorder.

An ecommerce ad agency that reports cost per click and click-through rate without showing contribution margin is measuring the wrong thing.

The Shopify ad channels compared

Each channel catches shoppers at a different moment. Search and Shopping capture demand that already exists. Social and video create demand. Shop Campaigns sells into Shopify’s own buyer network.

Channel Best at Pricing model What it needs from you
Google Shopping and Performance Max Shoppers already searching for the product Cost per click with automated bidding Clean Merchant Center feed, accurate prices and shipping
Google Search Brand terms and high-intent category terms Cost per click Strong collection pages and landing pages
Meta (Facebook and Instagram) Discovery, new products, visual categories Mostly cost per impression A steady supply of short video and product creative
TikTok Younger audiences and demonstrable products Mostly cost per impression Native-feeling video, often creator-led
Shop Campaigns New customers inside the Shop app network You pay per acquired customer within limits you set Eligibility in your Shopify admin and healthy margins
Pinterest and YouTube Planning purchases, home, fashion, gifts Impression or view based Evergreen imagery and video

Shop Campaigns

Shop Campaigns is Shopify’s own advertising product, where you pay for new customers rather than clicks. You set how much you are willing to pay to acquire a customer and Shopify places your products across the Shop app and partner placements. Availability depends on your plan, country and payment setup, so check the Marketing section of your admin. It is a useful test for stores with healthy margins, but it should sit alongside Google and Meta rather than replace them, because it gives you less control over targeting and creative.

Shopify Audiences

Shopify Audiences builds lookalike and retargeting lists from Shopify’s network of buyers and sends them to ad platforms such as Google and Meta. It is available on eligible plans. When it is available, it can help new stores that do not yet have enough of their own customer data.

Google Shopping and Performance Max

Google Shopping ads show a product image, price and store name directly in search results, and Performance Max extends those products across Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail and Maps. For most Shopify stores this is the first channel we fix, because it captures people who already want to buy. Our Google Ads management work covers campaign structure, bidding and search term control.

Meta and TikTok

Meta and TikTok find people who were not searching yet. Their automated shopping campaigns work well when the pixel and server-side events are accurate and when you give the system enough new creative to test each month. Without both, spend drifts toward existing customers who would have bought anyway.

Canadian rules that shape ecommerce advertising

Canadian stores advertise under a few federal and provincial rules that affect how ads, prices and emails are built. We build campaigns with these in mind. For how they apply to your specific business, speak with your own legal advisor.

Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL)

CASL requires consent before you send commercial email or SMS to Canadians, along with clear sender identification and a working unsubscribe. That means your Shopify signup forms, checkout marketing checkbox and pop-ups need to record consent properly before flows start sending.

Price display and drip pricing

The federal Competition Act treats advertising a price that cannot be obtained because of added mandatory fees as misleading. For ecommerce, the practical takeaway is simple: prices in ads, feeds and product pages should match what the shopper actually pays for the item, and mandatory fees should not appear only at checkout.

French language in Quebec

Quebec’s Charter of the French Language sets requirements for commercial content aimed at Quebec customers. If you sell into Quebec, plan French product content, French ads and a French storefront through Shopify Markets or a translation app.

Privacy and tracking consent

Canadian privacy law governs how personal information is collected and used, and Quebec has its own stricter rules. Shopify’s customer privacy settings and a proper consent banner decide which tracking tags can fire, which directly affects ad reporting.

How Shopify marketing changed after the tracking reset

Shopify was founded in Ottawa in 2006 and grew into one of the largest commerce platforms in the world. For most of the 2010s, advertising for Shopify stores was simple: install the Facebook pixel, target interests, scale what worked. That era ended in 2021, when Apple introduced App Tracking Transparency on iOS and many users opted out of cross-app tracking.

Since then, browser pixels alone miss a meaningful share of purchases. Ad platforms responded with modelled conversions and server-side connections such as Meta’s Conversions API and Google’s enhanced conversions. Shopify responded with its customer events and app pixel framework. The result is that tracking setup is now a core part of ad performance, not a technical afterthought. Stores with weak tracking feed the algorithms bad data and pay for it in higher costs.

The second change is automation. Performance Max and Meta’s automated shopping campaigns now make most targeting and placement decisions. The advertiser’s job has moved from micromanaging bids to controlling the inputs: data quality, product feed, creative supply, exclusions and profit targets.

Tracking and attribution protocol for Shopify stores

Accurate tracking is the foundation of every Shopify ad account we manage. Here is the protocol we follow before scaling spend.

1. Audit what fires today

Most stores we review have duplicate purchase events. Old theme code, a legacy app and a newer channel app often all send the same purchase, which inflates reported results. We map every tag and event, then remove the duplicates.

2. Connect channels through Shopify’s native apps

Shopify’s official Google and YouTube channel and its Facebook and Instagram channel send purchase data through Shopify’s customer events. We configure these with the highest data sharing level your consent settings allow, which turns on server-side events.

3. Turn on server-side and enhanced signals

Meta’s Conversions API and Google’s enhanced conversions send hashed first-party data with each purchase so platforms can match more orders. Deduplication keys make sure the browser and server events are counted once.

4. Respect consent

Google Consent Mode and Shopify’s customer privacy API decide what data can be sent when a visitor declines tracking. Getting this right protects you and keeps modelled conversions working.

5. Reconcile against Shopify

Shopify’s own order data is the source of truth. Each month we compare platform-reported revenue with real Shopify revenue by channel and track blended numbers: total ad spend divided by total new-customer revenue. When platform numbers and Shopify numbers disagree, we trust Shopify.

Product feed and Google Merchant Center setup

Your product feed is the raw material for every Shopping and Performance Max ad. Google reads your titles, descriptions, images, prices, availability, shipping and return policies from Merchant Center, and it disapproves or quietly limits products when that data is wrong.

Titles written for search

Product titles in the feed should lead with what people type: brand, product type, key attribute, size or colour. A title like “The Aurora” means something to you and nothing to a shopper searching for a wool winter coat.

Identifiers and attributes

GTINs, brand, condition, gender, age group, size and colour help Google match products to searches. Missing identifiers on branded products are a common reason for weak Shopping visibility.

Custom labels for profit

Custom labels let us group products by margin, price band, best sellers or clearance. That is how we give a high-margin product line a looser target and a thin-margin line a stricter one inside the same account.

Shipping, returns and price accuracy

Merchant Center checks that the price and availability in your feed match your product page. Mismatches cause disapprovals. Clear shipping and return settings also show as annotations in ads, which helps click-through.

Shopify SEO and organic demand

Shopify SEO turns the traffic you currently rent into traffic you own. Collection pages are usually the biggest opportunity, because they match category searches such as “women’s merino base layers” far better than individual product pages.

  • Collection pages with a short, useful introduction, clean filters and internal links to related collections.
  • Product pages with unique descriptions, answers to real buyer questions and product structured data.
  • Technical cleanup of duplicate URLs from tags and variants, image weight and theme app bloat.
  • Content that answers comparison and how-to questions and links back to collections.

Our SEO services start from CAD 1,500 per month, with higher tiers by proposal. Paid search data tells us which terms convert, so SEO priorities come from real sales rather than guesses. If your brand also has a showroom or pickup location, local SEO can bring nearby shoppers in as well.

Email, SMS and retention marketing

Retention marketing is the cheapest revenue in ecommerce because you already paid to acquire the customer. The core flows every Shopify store should run are:

  1. Welcome series for new subscribers, introducing the brand and best sellers.
  2. Browse and cart abandonment reminders for shoppers who left without buying.
  3. Post-purchase messages covering delivery, product care and a review request.
  4. Replenishment timed to when consumable products run out.
  5. Win-back for customers who have not ordered in a while.

All of these depend on CASL-compliant consent capture. Once flows are live, paid campaigns can focus on genuinely new customers while email and SMS handle the people you already know.

What Shopify advertising costs

Shopify advertising has three separate costs, and a clear quote should show each one. There is no single price for Shopify ads, because budget depends on your product margins, order value, competition and how fast you want to grow.

Cost component Who you pay What drives it
Ad spend Google, Meta, TikTok, Shopify (Shop Campaigns) directly Competition for your products, targets, seasonality, growth goals
Setup Your agency, one time Tracking cleanup, feed quality, number of channels and markets
Monthly management Your agency Number of channels, catalogue size, creative volume, reporting depth
SEO Your agency Catalogue size and content needs; Canada Create™ SEO starts from CAD 1,500/month
Apps and tools Shopify app developers and software vendors Email platform, reviews, subscriptions, feed tools, often billed in US dollars
Creative Photographers, creators or your in-house team How many new ads social channels need each month

We recommend starting with a test budget large enough to give each campaign meaningful data within a few weeks, then scaling only where contribution margin holds. We would rather tell you a channel is not ready than spend your money proving it.

Break-even ROAS and the numbers that matter

Break-even ROAS equals 1 divided by your contribution margin percentage. Contribution margin is what is left from an order after product cost, shipping, payment fees, packaging and expected returns.

Contribution margin Break-even ROAS What it means
60% 1.67 Room to prospect aggressively for new customers
40% 2.5 Workable for most channels with good tracking
25% 4.0 Needs bundles, higher order value or repeat purchase to scale

Metrics we report

Blended ROAS, sometimes called MER, divides total Shopify revenue by total ad spend and cannot be inflated by any single platform. We also report new-customer revenue, cost per new customer, average order value and contribution margin after ad spend. Platform ROAS is useful for decisions inside a channel, but it is never the headline number.

First order versus lifetime value

Customer lifetime value is the total margin a customer brings over all their orders. If your customers reliably reorder, you can afford to pay more for the first order. If they rarely return, every first order must be profitable on its own. We use your Shopify cohort data to decide which applies.

Shopify marketing by store type

Store type changes channel mix more than any other factor.

Consumable and subscription brands

Consumable products reward retention above all else. We push subscription offers, replenishment flows and first-order bundles, and accept a thinner first-order margin when repeat data supports it.

High-ticket and considered purchases

High-ticket products such as furniture have longer decision cycles. Search, Shopping, YouTube and retargeting with reviews and financing information do more work than impulse-driven social ads.

Fashion and visual categories

Visual categories depend on creative volume. Meta, TikTok and Pinterest carry discovery, while Shopping catches people searching for specific items. Returns must be built into margin targets.

Thin-margin and competitive catalogues

Electronics and commodity products compete on price in Shopping. Feed accuracy, custom labels by margin and careful exclusion of unprofitable products matter most here.

The downsides of Shopify for Canadian stores

Shopify is a strong platform, but Canadian merchants should know its trade-offs before building a marketing plan on it.

  • App costs add up. Many apps bill monthly and often in US dollars, which moves with the exchange rate. We audit apps regularly and remove ones that slow the store or duplicate tracking.
  • Transaction fees on third-party gateways. Stores that do not use Shopify Payments pay an extra fee on each order, which lowers margin and raises break-even ROAS.
  • Theme and URL limits. Shopify’s fixed URL structure and tag pages can create duplicate content that needs cleanup for SEO.
  • Bilingual needs. Selling into Quebec means managing French content through Shopify Markets or translation apps, and French ads.
  • Cross-border shipping and duties. Selling to the United States from Canada adds shipping and duty questions that affect how prices appear in ads.

If a store’s problems are in the build rather than the marketing, our ecommerce website team handles Shopify and WooCommerce builds, and our WordPress development team supports WooCommerce stores.

How to choose a Shopify marketing agency

A good Shopify marketing agency should be able to answer these questions clearly before you sign anything:

  1. How will you verify tracking? Look for a specific plan covering duplicate events, server-side signals and consent.
  2. What target will you use, and where does it come from? The answer should start from your margins, not an industry average.
  3. How do you separate new and returning customers? Prospecting that mostly reaches existing buyers looks great and grows nothing.
  4. Who owns the ad accounts? You should. The agency works through partner access.
  5. How do you report? Reports should reconcile against Shopify orders every month.

Canada Create™ has run digital marketing since 2008 and is a BBB Accredited Business with an A+ rating. Our team works across web design, paid media and SEO, so store fixes and ad changes happen together.

Creative that sells: product photos, video and user content

On most paid social channels, the creative does more of the targeting than the settings do. Platforms now find buyers largely based on who engages with the ad, so a store’s results depend heavily on the quality and variety of its images and video.

  • Product in use. Short clips showing the product solving a problem usually outperform studio shots alone.
  • Customer content. Reviews, unboxing clips and photos from real buyers, used with permission, build trust with new visitors.
  • Offer clarity. Price, shipping cost and delivery time visible in the ad or on the landing page reduce wasted clicks.
  • Steady testing. New creative every few weeks, with clear rules for when to pause what is not working.

We plan creative tests alongside the ad budget, so spend is not wasted on tired ads that the audience has already seen many times.

Selling to both Canada and the United States

Many Canadian Shopify stores sell across the border, and campaigns need to reflect the differences. Currency, shipping times, duties and taxes, and returns all change what a customer sees and what they are willing to pay.

  • Separate campaigns by country, so budgets and bids reflect each market’s margins.
  • Shopify Markets or a similar setup to show local currency and prices.
  • Clear information on duties, taxes and delivery times at checkout, since surprise costs are a leading cause of abandoned carts.
  • Product feeds for each country in Google Merchant Center, with correct shipping and tax settings.

Seasonal peaks: Black Friday, holidays and back to school

The largest share of many stores’ annual revenue arrives in a few weeks, and preparation starts months earlier. Advertising costs rise sharply around Black Friday and Cyber Monday as every retailer competes for the same attention.

  • Build email and text lists in the months before peak season, when ad costs are lower.
  • Confirm inventory and shipping cut-off dates before promising holiday delivery.
  • Prepare offers, landing pages and creative in advance and test them before the rush.
  • Plan post-holiday campaigns for gift card redemption and returns, which bring customers back to the store.

Mistakes that drain Shopify ad budgets

  • Judging campaigns on platform-reported revenue alone, when platforms often count the same sale more than once.
  • Scaling spend before checking margins after discounts, shipping and returns.
  • A broken or incomplete product feed, which quietly limits Shopping ads.
  • Too many apps slowing the store, which lowers conversion rates for every channel.
  • No retention program, so every sale has to be bought again with ads.

Landing pages and conversion rate

A better converting store makes every advertising channel cheaper. If twice as many visitors buy, you can afford to pay more for each click and still profit. Before increasing ad spend, we review the pages ads send people to.

  • Product pages with clear photos, sizing or specification details, delivery times and return terms above the fold on mobile.
  • Collection pages built for specific campaigns, so a visitor from a search for a product type lands on exactly that range.
  • Checkout with accelerated payment options, no surprise costs and as few steps as possible.
  • Speed. Removing unused apps and oversized images often improves conversion more than any ad change.

Budgeting and scaling Shopify advertising

Budgets should be set from margins, not from what competitors seem to spend. We start by calculating how much you can pay to acquire a customer while staying profitable, taking into account product margin, shipping, returns and the value of repeat orders. From there, we set a testing budget, prove which campaigns meet the target, and scale those first.

Our management fee is quoted separately from ad spend and third-party costs such as apps, creative production or feed tools. Budgets can go up or down from one month to the next.

Who owns your store data and ad accounts

Your Shopify store, ad accounts, pixels and product feeds should always belong to you. We work inside your accounts with access you control, so if you ever change agencies, your history, audiences and data stay with your business.

Questions to ask a Shopify marketing agency

The best agencies talk about margins and customers, not only about ad platforms. Before hiring anyone, ask:

  • How do you calculate my target return on ad spend, and does it include shipping, returns and discounts?
  • How do you check attribution when every platform claims the same sale?
  • Who produces creative, and how often will it be refreshed?
  • Will you fix my product feed and tracking before increasing spend?
  • What do you do for retention, such as email, text and repeat purchase campaigns?
  • Who owns the ad accounts, pixels and data?

We answer these in writing in every proposal. Canada Create™ has more than 18 years of experience in Canada and the United States and holds an A+ BBB rating.

How we grow a Shopify store

We fix the data first, then spend. Every step is judged against profit per order.

  1. Store and account audit Week 1

We review your ad accounts, tracking, product feed, margins and checkout, then agree on break-even targets by product group.

  2. Tracking rebuild Weeks 1 to 2

We remove duplicate events, connect server-side signals and set up consent so every platform learns from real orders.

  3. Feed and campaign build Weeks 2 to 4

We clean the Merchant Center feed and launch Shopping, Performance Max and social campaigns structured by margin.

  4. Retention and SEO Month 2

We build email and SMS flows and fix collection and product pages so paid traffic turns into repeat buyers and organic demand.

  5. Scale and report Month 3 onward

We raise budget where contribution margin holds, test new creative monthly and report against Shopify revenue, not platform claims.

Canada Create has been an excellent marketing and branding partner for our dental practice. Their understanding of local SEO, digital marketing, social media, content creation, Google visibility, and AI optimization really stood out to us. A dental practice depends heavily on trust, reputation, patient experience, and being discoverable when someone is searching for a dentist. Canada Create understands how to bring those pieces together and communicate the quality of a practice naturally. I would highly recommend Canada Create to dentists, dental clinics, and other healthcare professionals looking to improve their online presence, local search visibility, branding, and organic growth.

I had a great experience working with this business. They helped me build my tutoring website from scratch and guided me through the entire process. I knew nothing about how the process worked, but they were professional, patient, and incredibly helpful. They took the time to understand what I wanted, handled the setup and design, and made sure everything worked properly. I’m very happy with the final result and would definitely recommend them to anyone who needs help creating a professional website or getting their business online.

We hired Canada Create to help strengthen the online marketing for Marvel Car Clinic and the results have been very positive. They developed our new website and managed the Google Ads strategy around our main automotive services including paint protection film (PPF), vehicle wraps and ceramic coating. The biggest improvement for me has been the overall quality of our online presence. Customers can now clearly see what we offer, the website is much more professional and our advertising is bringing relevant people directly to the services they are searching for. Their team understands conversion and lead generation, not just design. Everything from the website layout to the advertising campaigns feels like it was created with the goal of getting more customers. Great communication, professional work and strong results. I would recommend Canada Create to any Toronto or GTA business looking for Google Ads management, website development and digital marketing.

We’ve had a great experience working with Canada Create on the digital marketing for Marvel Car Clinic. They completely improved our online presence with a professionally designed new website and a much stronger Google Ads strategy. Our business specializes in car wraps, paint protection film (PPF), ceramic coating and automotive protection services, so attracting the right type of customer is extremely important. The Canada Create team took the time to understand our services, our target market and what actually makes a customer contact us. Since launching the new website and Google Ads campaigns, we’ve seen a noticeable improvement in the quality of inquiries coming in. The website looks professional, is easy to navigate and presents our car wrap, PPF and ceramic coating services much better than before. What we appreciate most is that they focus on results instead of simply running ads. Communication has been great, changes are handled quickly and the team is always looking for ways to improve the campaigns. If you’re looking for a digital marketing agency in Toronto for Google Ads, website design and lead generation, I would definitely recommend Canada Create.

Shopify advertising questions

How much does it cost to advertise on Shopify?

There is no fixed price. You pay the ad platforms directly for spend, plus any management fee and app costs. The right budget depends on your margins, average order value and how much demand exists for your products. We work out a break-even target first, then recommend a test budget.

How do I advertise my Shopify store?

Start with accurate tracking through Shopify's Google and Meta channel apps, a clean Merchant Center feed, then Google Shopping for existing demand and Meta or TikTok for discovery. Add email flows so paid traffic turns into repeat customers.

Does Shopify have its own advertising?

Yes. Shop Campaigns lets eligible merchants pay for new customers across the Shop app network, and Shopify Audiences helps eligible stores build ad audiences from Shopify buyer data. Shopify Email handles email marketing inside the admin.

Can I hire someone to manage my Shopify store marketing?

Yes. You can give an agency collaborator access to your Shopify admin and partner access to your ad accounts without sharing your password. Canada Create™ manages ads, SEO and retention for Shopify stores.

How much does Shopify take from a $100 sale?

It depends on your Shopify plan, whether you use Shopify Payments or a third-party gateway, the card type and any currency conversion. Shopify publishes current rates on its pricing page. App subscriptions and shipping labels are extra. We include these costs when we calculate your break-even ROAS.

Is Shopify still worth it in 2026?

For most small and mid-sized direct-to-consumer brands it remains a strong choice because of its checkout, app ecosystem and native ad channel integrations. It is less suited to stores that need heavy custom logic without apps.

Is Shopify still a Canadian company?

Shopify was founded in Ottawa in 2006 and has deep Canadian roots. For its current corporate structure and listings, check Shopify's investor relations page.

What are the disadvantages of using Shopify in Canada?

The main ones are app subscriptions that are often billed in US dollars, transaction fees when you do not use Shopify Payments, French content requirements for Quebec, and CASL consent rules for email and SMS. All are manageable with the right setup.

What ROAS should a Shopify store aim for?

Your break-even ROAS is 1 divided by your contribution margin. A product with a 40 percent margin after costs breaks even at a ROAS of 2.5. Targets should be set per product group, not one number for the whole store.

Do you build Shopify stores too?

Our focus on this page is marketing. For store builds and rebuilds, see our ecommerce website service.

What a weak Shopify ad account costs you

Duplicate purchase events, a messy feed and one ROAS target for every product quietly push spend toward low-margin orders and returning customers. The account looks fine in the platform and loses money in Shopify.
