SEO in the capital region
How local search works here, and how we approach it
SEO services for the capital region
If you are comparing SEO services in Ottawa, or looking for an Ottawa SEO company you can trust with your website, you probably want three answers quickly: what the work involves, whether it will bring enquiries and what it costs. This page answers all three. Canada Create™ has worked on search since 2008 for businesses in Canada and the United States, and we plan every campaign from the results your customers actually see, in English and in French.
SEO is the work of making your website and Google Business Profile the most useful, trusted and technically sound answer to the searches that bring buyers. Done well, it puts your business in the map pack, in the organic listings and in the AI written answers that now sit above both. Done badly, it produces reports full of rankings for phrases nobody uses. The difference is planning, and that is where we start.
What makes local search in the capital different
The capital region has a search market unlike most Canadian cities. The federal government is a major employer and buyer, the Kanata North technology park is home to many software and telecommunications firms, and many residents speak French at home or at work. Many businesses also serve customers on both sides of the river, in Ontario and in Quebec. Each of these facts changes which pages rank and which pages you need.
Relevance, distance and prominence
Google ranks local businesses on three broad factors. Relevance is how well your pages and profile match the search. Distance is how close the business is to the searcher or to the area named in the search. Prominence is how well known and trusted the business is, judged from reviews, links, mentions and the wider web. You can influence relevance and prominence directly; distance you manage by being clear about where you work.
A large, spread-out city
The city covers urban neighbourhoods, large suburbs and rural villages. Someone searching in Kanata will often see different map results from someone searching downtown. A business ranks most easily near its address and extends its reach with reviews, content and links connected to the communities it actually serves.
Directories, lists and AI answers
For many service searches, directories, “best of” lists and review sites take several page one positions, and Google often shows an AI Overview before the organic results. Accurate listings on trusted directories and pages that answer questions directly are both part of ranking now. We plan for every place a buyer might see you, not only the ten blue links.
Bilingual SEO for English and French websites
Many local businesses serve customers in French but have an English only website, or a French version produced years ago by machine translation and never updated. Both leave demand unanswered. French searches return different pages from English searches, and the competition for them is often different too.
A bilingual site that ranks in both languages needs a sound structure. These are the general principles we plan around:
- Separate pages for each language, each at its own URL, rather than a toggle that swaps text without changing the address.
- Language tags (hreflang) that tell Google which page is the English version and which is the French, so each searcher is shown the right one.
- Keyword research in each language, because francophone customers do not always search with a direct translation of the English term.
- Matching structure, so every English page has a clear partner in French and internal links follow the same pattern in both.
- A Google Business Profile that reflects the languages you actually serve customers in.
Our role on bilingual sites is structure, research, technical setup and optimization. The French copy itself should come from you, your team or a professional translator you trust, so the words match how you speak to francophone customers. We then optimize titles, headings, tags and internal links around that copy and keep both versions in step as the site grows.
What our SEO service includes
Every engagement uses the same foundations. The effort is then weighted toward whatever is holding your rankings back, which is different for every site.
Research and a page map
We find the searches that bring buyers in your category, check what Google ranks for each one from local locations, and assign every service, area and language to one page. That map stops your own pages competing with each other and shows exactly where new pages are needed.
Technical SEO
Crawling and indexing, speed on real phones, redirects, canonical tags, structured data, language tags and internal links, fixed directly in WordPress, Webflow, Shopify or custom platforms. Technical problems are often the fastest wins because they hold back every page on the site at once.
Service pages and content
Pages written from the questions buyers ask, compared against the pages that currently outrank you, with real proof such as projects, reviews, credentials and the areas you serve. Supporting articles answer narrower questions and link to the service page they support.
Google Business Profile and citations
Categories, services, hours, photos, posts, questions and review replies, plus accurate listings on the Canadian directories that matter in your category. Consistent business details across the web help Google trust the facts it shows about you.
Links and mentions
Links earned from industry associations, business organizations, suppliers, partners, community groups and local media. We never buy links from unrelated networks, because they carry risk and rarely help.
Tracking and reporting
Calls, forms and bookings tracked by page and by search, recorded in CS+, our CRM, when you want every enquiry followed up in one place, and summarized in a plain language monthly report with a call to review it.
Customers on both sides of the river
Gatineau and the other Quebec communities across the river are part of the same metropolitan area, and many businesses in the capital serve customers there. Quebec’s Charter of the French Language sets requirements for how businesses communicate commercially in Quebec, including on websites. If you actively sell into Quebec, plan your French pages with that in mind and confirm your obligations with a qualified adviser. We can structure the site so French pages are complete and easy to find; we do not give legal advice on language requirements.
For search, serving two provinces mostly affects the page map. A business with a location on each side needs a Business Profile and a location page for each one. A business based in Ontario that travels into Quebec should describe that service area clearly on its pages and in its profile, without listing an address it does not have.
Different buyers, different search plans
Where demand comes from depends on who your customers are. These are the patterns we plan around most often in the capital region.
Government contractors and B2B services
Firms that sell to federal departments and agencies have buyers who research carefully and search for specific capabilities, certifications and security requirements. SEO for these firms focuses on capability pages, case studies that can be shared publicly and content that answers technical questions. Public tenders are published on CanadaBuys, so SEO supports reputation and inbound enquiries; it does not replace the formal bidding process.
Technology companies
Software, telecommunications, cybersecurity and hardware firms often sell nationally or internationally, and their buyers rarely search with a city name. Their SEO is built around solution pages, technical content, comparisons and authority in a niche rather than the local map pack. Conversion paths for long sales cycles, such as demo requests and newsletter sign ups that meet CASL consent rules, matter as much as rankings.
Clinics and health services
Dental, physiotherapy, optometry and other clinics compete neighbourhood by neighbourhood, and language of service is often a deciding factor for patients. Treatment pages, a complete Business Profile and a steady flow of reviews carry most of the weight, always within the advertising rules of each regulatory college.
Home services and trades
Cold winters and humid summers drive demand for heating, cooling, plumbing, roofing, insulation and snow removal. Searches spike during cold snaps and storms, so pages built for urgent searches, accurate hours and a fast mobile site pay off quickly.
Professional services
Law firms, accountants and consultants compete on trust and expertise. Practice pages, detailed professional profiles, reviews and clear information about the languages you work in decide most first calls.
The map pack, suburbs and service areas
A business with a verified local address can compete for the map pack, and for most local businesses it is the most valuable position on the page. The work covers primary and secondary categories, services, accurate hours including holidays, real photos, regular posts, answers to questions, a steady review process with replies to every review and consistent business details across directories.
A business without a local address should not use a virtual office or mailbox to appear in the map pack. Google’s guidelines prohibit it, and listings built on such addresses are regularly suspended along with their reviews. For those businesses we focus on organic rankings, where a strong service page can compete without a local address, and on paid search.
Large suburbs such as Kanata, Barrhaven and Orléans often behave like separate markets for local searches. A dedicated suburb page is worth building when you have a location, real projects or clear demand there. Pages copied from a template with only the place name changed rarely rank and can weaken the site, so we recommend a strong main page with a clear service area section until the evidence supports more.
Is SEO dead now with AI?
No, but it has changed. More buyers ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s AI Overviews to explain a service or suggest a provider. Those tools draw heavily on pages that already rank, on reviews and directories, and on consistent facts about a business across the web. The fundamentals of SEO, a technically sound site, pages that answer questions clearly and a trusted reputation, are the same fundamentals that make a business easy for AI tools to describe accurately.
Some agencies call this generative engine optimization, or GEO. In practice it means a few extra habits on top of good SEO:
- Answer the main question near the top of each page in plain language.
- State services, service areas, languages and hours clearly and consistently everywhere.
- Use structured data so machines can read the key facts.
- Earn mentions on the industry sites and publications these tools trust.
- Check how your business is described in AI answers and correct the sources behind any errors.
We review how your business appears in AI answers during the first month and track it over time. Nobody can promise a mention in an AI answer, and we do not.
SEO and paid search together
SEO and paid search (SEM) work best as one plan. Paid search brings enquiries from the first week and shows which searches actually convert before months are invested in ranking for them. SEO lowers the cost of each enquiry over time and keeps working when ad budgets pause. Many clients run Google Ads in Ottawa while organic rankings build, using one keyword map so paid and organic pages support each other instead of competing. Ad management is priced separately from SEO, and ad spend is paid to Google directly.
How much does SEO cost?
SEO is priced by the work needed to win the searches that matter to you, so any honest answer starts with the cost drivers rather than a single number:
- How competitive your category is, and how strong the sites already ranking are.
- How many services, locations and languages need their own pages.
- The technical state of your current website.
- How much content and link work is needed to close the gap to the pages above you.
- Whether the plan includes extra reporting, AI visibility work or multi-location management.
At Canada Create™, SEO starts from CAD 1,500/month for one location and a focused set of services in a mid-competition category. Bilingual, multi-service, multi-location and national campaigns are quoted in writing after we review your site, with the scope listed so you can see exactly what the fee covers.
Across Canada, SEO fees vary widely because the scope varies widely. When you compare quotes, compare what each one includes: how many pages are written or improved each month, who does the technical work, how links are earned and what the report measures. A lower fee that covers only rank tracking is not cheaper if nothing moves.
Is SEO still worth it in 2026?
For most businesses that sell to people who search before they buy, yes. Organic results, map listings and AI answers are still where many buyers start, and the traffic keeps arriving without a fee for each click. SEO is less suited to businesses that need enquiries next week with no room for patience, to brand new categories nobody searches for yet, or to sites that cannot be changed. In those cases we will say so and suggest paid search or other channels first.
The honest test is simple: if your best customers search for what you sell, and competitors appear where you do not, SEO is worth planning. If they do not search at all, it is not.
The 80/20 rule and the 3-7-27 rule
The 80/20 rule, borrowed from the Pareto principle, suggests that a small share of effort produces most of the result. In SEO it is a useful planning habit rather than a law: a handful of pages usually bring most enquiries, a few technical problems usually hold back most of the site and a small set of searches usually carry most of the buying intent. We use it to decide what to fix first, so the first months go on the pages and searches most likely to produce enquiries.
The 3-7-27 rule is an informal marketing heuristic about repetition, and people describe it in different ways. The common idea is that buyers need to come across a business several times before they notice it, remember it and act. It is not a research finding, but the point behind it holds for search: a business that appears in the map pack, the organic results, an AI answer and a review site is seen more often than one that appears once, and that repetition builds the familiarity that turns a search into a call.
The first 90 days of an SEO campaign
Month one
We confirm the searches that bring buyers in each language you serve, record current rankings from local locations, install and test call and form tracking, and fix the technical problems that stop Google reading the site properly.
Month two
The pages closest to page one are rewritten to answer buyers’ questions better than the pages above them. Missing pages are planned, including French equivalents where there is demand. The Business Profile is completed and a review process begins.
Month three
Citations are cleaned up, the first links and mentions are earned from relevant sources and new content goes live. At the end of the quarter we review what moved and agree the next priorities with you.
How long does SEO take overall? Technical and Business Profile improvements often show within weeks. New service pages usually need several months to settle, and competitive categories take longer. We report leading indicators every month so progress can be judged early rather than guessed at.
What the monthly report shows
Each month you receive a short report built around enquiries: organic calls, forms and bookings with the pages that produced them, positions for the searches in the plan in English and French, Search Console impressions and clicks, Business Profile activity and new reviews, and the work completed and planned. Your Search Console, Analytics and Business Profile stay in your name, so you can check any number yourself. If something is not working, the report says so and explains what will change.
How to choose an SEO agency in Ottawa
You will find local agencies, national firms and independent consultants offering SEO in the capital. Compare them on specifics rather than promises:
- Will they show you a plan for your site, naming the searches, pages and technical problems they found?
- How do they handle bilingual sites: page structure, language tags and who writes the French copy?
- Who does the writing and the technical work, and who will you speak to each month?
- Will reports show calls and forms by page, not only keyword positions?
- Will you own your website, content, Business Profile and analytics accounts?
- Are they accredited with the Better Business Bureau, and what is their complaint history?
Be cautious of guaranteed rankings, link packages from sites you cannot see and plans to create dozens of near-identical suburb pages. No agency controls Google’s results.

SEO Ottawa: common questions
How much does an Ottawa SEO company cost?
Fees depend on scope: how competitive your category is, how many services, locations and languages need pages, the state of your site and the content and link work needed. Our entry tier is shown in the pricing section, and larger campaigns are quoted in writing after a review of your site.
Do you have an office in Ottawa?
No. Our office is at 126 Willowdale Ave., Suite #3, Toronto. We work with clients in the capital region by phone, video and email, and every plan is built on local search data.
Do you offer bilingual SEO for English and French sites?
Yes, for structure and optimization: separate URLs for each language, hreflang tags, keyword research in each language and matching internal links. The French copy should come from you or a professional translator you trust; we optimize and maintain the pages around it.
Can you get my business into the local map pack?
With a verified local address, improving map pack visibility is usually a main goal. We never use virtual offices or mailboxes, which break Google guidelines. Without a local address we focus on organic rankings and paid search.
How long does SEO take to work?
Technical and Business Profile improvements often show within weeks. New service pages usually need several months to settle, and competitive categories take longer. Monthly reports show leading indicators so progress can be judged early.
Is SEO still worth it now that AI answers appear in search?
For most businesses whose customers search before they buy, yes. AI tools draw on pages that rank, on reviews and on consistent facts about a business, so good SEO also helps you appear in AI answers.
Can SEO help government contractors and B2B firms?
It supports reputation and inbound enquiries through capability pages, case studies and technical content. Public tenders are still found and bid on through CanadaBuys; SEO does not replace that process.
Do I need separate pages for Kanata, Barrhaven or Orleans?
Only where you have a location, real projects or enough demand to justify original content. Near-identical suburb pages rarely rank.
How do you set expectations for results?
Nobody controls Google, AI assistants or social platforms, so we commit to a written plan, the work in it and honest monthly reporting on what it produces.
