Grok and X search

Give Grok the right facts on the web and on X

Grok SEO is the work of making your business findable and correctly described when people ask Grok, the AI assistant from xAI that is also built into X, for recommendations, explanations or news. Grok is different from the other assistants in one important way: it can search posts on X as well as the open web. What your business and your customers say on X can therefore shape its answers as much as your website does.

For most Toronto businesses Grok is a lower priority than Google or ChatGPT, so this page is honest about where it matters and where it does not. It covers how Grok searches, the absence of a published crawler setting, the role of your X presence and how we measure it. For the full program across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude, see AI search optimization in Toronto.

How Grok searches the web and X

Grok’s developer documentation, which xAI now publishes under the name SpaceXSI (xAI), describes two search tools that Grok can use when it answers. As of November 3, 2026:

ToolWhat the documentation saysWhat it means for a business
Web SearchGrok can search the web in real time, browse web pages and extract information, and returns citations; developers can limit or exclude up to five domainsYour website can be read and cited, so facts in text and clear pages matter
X SearchKeyword search, semantic search, user search and thread fetch on X, for real-time postsYour X profile, your posts and posts about you can inform answers
Image search and understandingOptional: Grok can analyze images it finds while browsing and include relevant images in responsesOriginal images with descriptive alt text can be found and shown

Two points follow for a business. First, Grok can read your website in real time and return citations, so the clarity of your pages still matters. Second, Grok can search X itself, including posts, user profiles and full threads, so your X profile, your posts and what other people post about you are part of the material it can use.

Two panels comparing Grok's Web Search and X Search tools and what each means for how a business is described

No published crawler setting for Grok

OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, Google and Apple all publish the names of their crawlers and the robots.txt tokens that control them. Grok’s developer documentation, checked November 3, 2026, does not publish a crawler name or a robots.txt token for site owners. We reviewed the documentation index for crawler, robots and user-agent information and found none; xAI’s help pages on x.com were not available to review.

That has practical consequences:

  • You cannot target Grok specifically in robots.txt the way you can allow OAI-SearchBot or block ClaudeBot, because there is no documented token to name.
  • We do not guess. We will not add rules for crawler names that xAI has not published, and we treat any third-party list of “Grok bots” with caution until xAI documents it.
  • Open, readable pages are the safe default. Pages that any legitimate crawler can read, with facts in text, are the ones Grok’s web search can use.
  • Server logs tell part of the story. We watch for new or unidentified AI-related user agents and investigate them, rather than blocking them on suspicion.

If xAI publishes crawler documentation, we will update our settings and this page.

Your X presence is part of Grok SEO

Because Grok can run keyword and semantic searches on X, look up user profiles and fetch whole threads, a business’s footprint on X is an input most other assistants do not weigh in the same way.

  • A complete X profile. Your business name exactly as it appears elsewhere, a clear description of what you do and where, your website link and your location.
  • Posts that state facts. Service announcements, new locations, hours changes, events and useful explanations written in plain language, not only promotional images.
  • Replies that help. Answering questions about your field publicly creates threads that show what you know.
  • Consistency with your website. The same services, areas and details on X as on your site, so Grok does not find two versions of your business.
  • Watching what others say. Customer posts and threads about your business are also searchable. Respond to complaints calmly and factually where appropriate.

None of this requires posting all day. A short, accurate profile and a steady record of factual posts is enough for most Toronto businesses.

Six cards listing what helps Grok describe a business: readable pages, clear openings, an accurate X profile, factual posts, helpful replies and consistent details

What Grok needs from your website

Grok’s Web Search tool browses pages to extract information and returns citations, so the same page habits that help any answer engine apply:

  • Written facts: what you offer, where you work, your hours, what drives the price and your credentials, as page text a crawler can extract.
  • A clear opening on each page: what the page offers, for whom and where, in the first lines.
  • Question headings with direct answers, so a passage makes sense when quoted on its own.
  • Current information with dates, especially for anything that changes, such as programs, rules or seasonal hours.
  • Original images with descriptive alt text, since Grok’s tools can also find and include images.

Why Grok gets a business wrong

Grok’s answers mix web pages and live posts, so its errors tend to come from a few places:

  • An old or unclaimed X account that still shows a previous name, address or service list.
  • A viral post or complaint that outweighs the rest of your footprint for a few days.
  • A namesake. Another business, person or product with a similar name on X can be mixed up with yours, especially if your profile does not say where you are and what you do.
  • Thin web pages that leave Grok to rely on posts and third-party sites for basic facts.
  • Conflicting details between your website, your listings and your X profile.

Most of these are fixed where they start: update or retire old accounts, keep your profile specific, answer public questions with facts, and make sure your website states the basics clearly.

Grok in apps that other companies build

Grok’s documentation is written for developers who build their own products on Grok, and it shows how they can shape its search. A developer can limit web searches to up to five allowed domains, or exclude up to five domains, and can filter X searches by handle. A company building a research tool or a customer service assistant on Grok might, for example, restrict it to a handful of trusted directories or news sites.

You cannot control those settings in someone else’s app, but they are a reminder of why independent listings matter. If the sites a developer trusts describe your business accurately (industry directories, association member lists, reputable local news), you have a better chance of being found even when Grok is told to look only there.

Grok and your reputation on X

Because Grok can fetch whole threads and run semantic searches on X, the tone and content of public conversations about your business can surface in its answers. A few habits keep that conversation accurate:

  • Answer public questions promptly and factually, with the specific detail a reader would need.
  • Move private matters to private channels once you have acknowledged them publicly, so personal information stays out of public threads.
  • Correct factual errors politely, with a link to the page that has the right information.
  • Do not argue or delete in a way that draws more attention. Calm, factual replies age better.

These are good customer service habits anyway; on X they also become part of what an assistant can read.

A quarterly Grok check for Toronto owners

For most businesses, a short check every three months is enough.

  • Review your X profile: name, description, website link and location.
  • Read your last few months of posts and replies for anything outdated.
  • Ask Grok three questions your buyers ask and note who it names and which pages and posts it cites.
  • Search X for your business name and read what customers and others are saying.
  • Confirm your main web pages still state your services, areas and contact details in text.

If Grok keeps naming competitors for questions that matter to you, that is the moment to give it more attention.

Who should care about Grok

Grok matters more for some businesses than others, and it is worth being clear about that before spending money on it.

  • Brands whose buyers are active on X: technology, media, finance, sports, gaming, politics and current affairs, and B2B companies whose industry discusses news there.
  • Businesses tied to live events and news: venues, event organizers, transit-sensitive services and anyone whose customers ask “what is happening now”.
  • Founders and professionals with a public profile on X, whose expertise is already visible there.

For most local service businesses in Toronto, Grok is a lower priority than Google, ChatGPT and the map platforms. In that case, the right step is small: keep an accurate X profile linked to your website, make sure your pages are open and clear, and check a few Grok prompts once a quarter.

How we measure visibility in Grok

Grok has no reporting console for site owners that we know of in xAI’s documentation, so measurement is hands-on and kept in proportion to what Grok is worth to you:

  • Tracked prompts your buyers might ask Grok, run on a schedule with the date recorded.
  • Citations and mentions: whether your business is named, which web pages and X posts are cited and which competitors appear.
  • Accuracy: facts Grok states about you, checked against the truth.
  • X activity: profile completeness, factual posts and threads that mention your business.
  • Referral visits from Grok and x.com, whenever analytics can attribute them.

What our Grok SEO service includes

Grok work is usually a small part of a wider AI search scope. After a free consultation, the custom proposal sets out what is worth doing for your business. It can include:

  • Grok visibility check: a set of buyer prompts and what Grok says and cites today.
  • Website clarity review: key pages checked for facts in text and quotable sections.
  • X profile review: name, description, link, location and consistency with your other listings.
  • Content guidance for X: what kinds of factual posts and replies are worth making, written in your voice and within your industry’s rules.
  • Monitoring: periodic checks of Grok prompts and of new AI crawler activity in your logs.

How Grok fits with the other assistants

Most of the groundwork for Grok is shared with the other engines: clear pages, consistent facts and genuine mentions. The engine-specific settings sit elsewhere: OpenAI’s crawlers on our ChatGPT SEO page, Anthropic’s on SEO for Claude, and Perplexity’s on Perplexity SEO. For social channels more broadly, see our social media marketing agency in Toronto. Our AI SEO program in Toronto decides how much of each engine your business needs.

Before you start: questions owners ask

Is Grok worth it for my business?

If your buyers are active on X, or your business is tied to news and live events, yes. For most local service businesses, Grok is a lower priority, and a well-kept X profile plus open, clear web pages covers most of what it needs.

Can anyone promise that Grok will mention my business?

No. For each question Grok chooses what to look up and what to cite, and the live posts it reads can change within hours. What can be done is to keep your website clear and your X presence accurate, then check what Grok says over time.

Why not block or allow Grok in robots.txt?

Because xAI has not published a crawler name or robots.txt token for Grok, there is nothing documented to target. We keep public pages open to legitimate crawlers and update settings if xAI publishes guidance.

Grok SEO in Toronto: questions buyers ask

How Grok works

What is Grok SEO?

Grok SEO is the work of making your business findable and correctly described when people ask Grok for recommendations or explanations. Because Grok can search both the web and X, it covers clear, readable web pages, an accurate X profile, factual posts and monitoring what Grok says about you.

What is Grok?

Grok is the AI assistant from xAI, which now publishes its developer documentation as SpaceXSI (xAI). It is also available on X. For a business, the relevant part is that Grok can search the web and X in real time and cite what it finds.

How does Grok find information?

According to its developer documentation, Grok can use a Web Search tool to search and browse web pages in real time, and an X Search tool for keyword, semantic and user searches and full threads on X. Answers can include citations to what it used.

Does Grok cite its sources?

The developer documentation says Grok's web search returns citations, and it describes how developers retrieve them. In practice, when Grok uses search, it can show where its information came from, which makes it possible to see whether your pages or posts were used.

Does Grok use posts on X?

Yes. Grok's documentation describes an X Search tool that performs keyword search, semantic search, user search and thread fetch on X to access real-time posts. What your business posts, and what others post about you, can therefore shape its answers.

Are Grok and Google the same?

No. Grok is xAI's assistant with its own web search and X search tools; Google Search, AI Overviews and Gemini are Google's products with their own documented controls. A business can be visible in one and not the other, so each is checked separately.

Is Grok better than ChatGPT for local businesses?

They serve different audiences. ChatGPT is a general assistant with a documented search crawler; Grok stands out for real-time content from X. For most local businesses, ChatGPT and Google come first, with Grok covered through a solid X profile and clear web pages.

What is Grokipedia?

Grokipedia is a site used as the example domain in Grok's web search documentation for restricting searches. xAI's developer docs do not explain how it affects Grok's answers for businesses, so we do not make claims about it or try to influence it.

Crawlers and access

Does Grok have a crawler like GPTBot or ClaudeBot?

Grok's developer documentation, checked November 3, 2026, does not publish a crawler name or robots.txt token for site owners. OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, Google and Apple all document theirs. Without a published name, there is no documented way to target Grok in robots.txt.

Can I block Grok in robots.txt?

Not with a documented Grok-specific rule, because xAI has not published a crawler name or token. Rules for all user agents apply to every compliant crawler, which would also affect search engines you want. We do not add rules for unpublished bot names.

How do I allow Grok to read my website?

Keep your public pages open to legitimate crawlers, avoid site-wide CAPTCHAs and broad AI bot blocks, and put key facts in readable HTML. Since no Grok crawler is documented, that is the safe way to make sure its web search can use your pages.

Should I trust lists of Grok bot names online?

Treat them with caution. Unless xAI documents a crawler name and its IP ranges, a list from a third party may be wrong or out of date, and anyone can copy a user agent string. We investigate unknown AI user agents in your logs instead of acting on rumour.

Can website owners exclude their site from Grok's search?

The documentation describes allowed and excluded domain options for developers who build with Grok's web search, but those are settings for the developer making the request, not a site-owner control. xAI has not documented a publisher opt-out for Grok.

Can developers limit which websites Grok searches?

Yes, in their own apps. Grok's documentation lets developers restrict web searches to up to five allowed domains or exclude up to five, and filter X searches by handle. Accurate listings on trusted directories and news sites help when an app limits Grok to those sources.

X presence

Does my X profile affect what Grok says about my business?

It can. Grok's X Search tool includes user search and post search, so your profile and posts are part of what it can read. Use your exact business name, a plain description of what you do and where, your website link and your location.

What should a business post on X for Grok?

Factual, useful posts: new services, locations, hours changes, events, answers to common questions and short explanations of your field. Plain-language text is easier to search and quote than image-only posts. Post steadily rather than often.

Do customer posts about my business matter for Grok?

They can, because X Search can find posts and threads that mention you. Respond to public questions and complaints calmly and factually where appropriate, and encourage happy customers to share their experience in their own words.

Do I need to be active on X for Grok to mention me?

Not necessarily. Grok can also search the web, so clear web pages and consistent listings help. An accurate X profile with a link to your site is a low-effort way to make sure the X side of Grok's search finds the right information.

Should my X profile match my website and listings?

Yes. Use the same name, services, areas and contact details on X as on your website and Google Business Profile. Conflicting details across sources are a common reason assistants describe a business inconsistently.

Getting mentioned

How do I rank on Grok?

Grok does not publish ranking factors. The practical steps are to keep your website open and clear, state facts in text, keep an accurate X profile, post factual updates, and earn genuine mentions. Then check a set of prompts to see whether Grok names you.

How do I get my business mentioned by Grok?

Give it accurate material in both places it searches: web pages that answer your buyers' questions directly, and an X presence that describes your business consistently. Mentions by others on X and on independent websites add to that.

Why does Grok mention a competitor and not me?

Often because the competitor is described more clearly on the web or more often on X, through their own posts, customer posts or news coverage. Checking which pages and posts Grok cites shows where the gap is.

What content does Grok cite from websites?

Pages its web search can browse and extract information from: facts in text, clear openings, question headings with direct answers and current dates. Content hidden in images or loaded only by scripts is harder for any crawler to use.

Does Grok use images from my website?

Grok's documentation describes optional image understanding and image search during browsing. Original photos with descriptive file names and alt text, on pages that state what they show, are the images that can be found and shown accurately.

Does Grok care about news coverage?

Grok can search the web and X in real time, so recent coverage of your business on news sites and posts about it on X are both findable. Genuine coverage earned on merit helps; paid or fake mentions risk harming trust.

Why does Grok describe my business incorrectly?

Usual causes are an outdated or unclaimed X account, a namesake with a similar handle, a viral post that dominates recent results, thin web pages or conflicting details across sources. Fix each one where it starts: update the profile, clarify your pages and correct public errors politely with a link to the right information.

Who it suits

Is Grok worth it for a Toronto business?

It depends on your buyers. Businesses whose customers are active on X, or whose work is tied to news and live events, benefit most. For most local service businesses, Grok is a lower priority, and a good X profile plus clear web pages covers it.

Which industries benefit most from Grok SEO?

Technology, media, finance, sports and gaming, events and venues, and B2B companies whose industries discuss news on X. Founders and professionals with an active X presence also benefit, because their expertise is already searchable there.

Does Grok matter for B2B companies?

For B2B companies whose buyers follow industry news on X, it can. Factual posts about your expertise, clear service pages and consistent company details on X and your website help Grok describe you correctly when buyers ask about vendors.

Can regulated professionals use X for Grok visibility?

Yes, within their regulator's rules. Factual, educational posts and an accurate profile are usually fine; testimonials, outcome claims or superiority claims may be restricted. The same rules apply to your website, so keep both consistent and compliant.

Measuring results

How do I check what Grok says about my business?

Ask Grok the questions your buyers ask, on a schedule, and record the date, whether you are named and which web pages or X posts are cited. Because Grok uses real-time posts, answers can change quickly, so a series of checks is more useful than one.

Does xAI offer a report for website owners?

We have found no site-owner reporting for Grok in xAI's documentation. Measurement therefore uses tracked prompts, the citations Grok shows and referral visits in your analytics, with the effort kept in proportion to how much Grok matters for your business.

Can I see Grok traffic in my analytics?

Sometimes. Visits from Grok or from x.com can appear as referrals when the browser passes that information. Some arrive without it. We track them as their own line and connect them to enquiries where possible.

Why do Grok answers change so quickly?

Grok can search live posts on X, which change by the hour, as well as the web. A new thread, a news story or a viral post can change what it says. That is why we track the same prompts over time and look at the trend.

Working with us

What does Grok SEO include at Canada Create?

Usually a small, focused scope inside a wider AI search program: a Grok visibility check, a website clarity review, an X profile review, guidance on factual posts and replies, and periodic monitoring of Grok prompts and new AI crawler activity in your logs.

How much does Grok SEO cost in Toronto?

It is usually a modest add-on to a broader scope, sized to how much Grok matters for your buyers. After a free consultation, the fee is written into a custom proposal, and any third-party costs are shown on a separate line.

How long does Grok SEO take?

Profile and page improvements can be made in the first weeks. Because Grok searches in real time, changes can show up whenever it next searches a related question, but mentions by others take longer. We check the same prompts on a schedule.

Do you manage our X account?

Grok SEO focuses on making your profile and posts accurate and useful for search. If you want ongoing social media management, that is a separate service, which our social media team can scope with you.

Can I do Grok SEO myself?

Mostly, yes. Keep your X profile accurate and linked to your site, post factual updates, make sure your web pages are open and clear, and ask Grok a few of your buyers' questions every quarter. Bring in help if Grok matters a lot to your buyers.

Is Grok SEO separate from my other AI search work?

The X profile and the Grok checks are specific to Grok, but the website work serves every assistant. Grok sits inside the same AI search scope as the rest, which avoids duplicated work and keeps the time spent on it in line with its value.
