Insurance is one of the most expensive industries to advertise in Canada. “Home insurance” averaged about US$45 per click and “car insurance” about US$33 in Canada, while “insurance broker” draws about 14,800 searches a month at about US$22 per click. Brokers compete with direct insurers, comparison sites and other brokerages for the same quote requests. The brokerages that grow combine strong local search, fast quoting, renewal retention and marketing that stays inside their regulator’s advertising rules. This guide covers each piece.
Search demand and cost
| Search | Monthly searches in Canada | Average CPC (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| car insurance | 40,500 | 33.08 |
| insurance broker | 14,800 | 21.53 |
| home insurance | 12,100 | 44.57 |
| insurance broker near me | 8,100 | 7.83 |
We combine search, ads and landing pages into lead generation programs measured on real enquiries.
Notice the gap: “insurance broker near me” costs a fraction of the head terms. Local intent is where brokers can compete affordably.
Know your advertising rules first
In Ontario, general insurance brokers are regulated by the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO). RIBO’s guidance prohibits misleading advertising, including false claims or affiliations, unauthorized use of insurer logos, defaming competitors, scare tactics, bait and switch offers and incomplete information that misrepresents policy terms (see RIBO’s page on advertising to the public). RIBO also recommends submitting marketing plans for review before launch. Life and health agents and brokers in other provinces have their own regulators and rules.
In practice: avoid “lowest rates guaranteed”, only show insurer logos you are authorized to use, and make sure any savings claim is accurate and complete.
Win local search
- Complete your Google Business Profile with each line you write: auto, home, tenant, condo, commercial, contractor and specialty coverage.
- Build a page per line of business and per city you serve, with real local detail such as common risks in that area.
- Ask satisfied clients for reviews after a claim is handled well or a renewal saves them time.
- Show the languages your team speaks. Many clients prefer a broker who speaks their language.
Content that earns quote requests
- Why did my home insurance go up? Explain the factors in plain language.
- Broker versus direct insurer: what is the difference?
- What commercial insurance does a contractor, restaurant or clinic need?
- How to lower car insurance in your province, accurately and without promises.
- What to do after a car accident or a water damage claim.
Google Ads at insurance prices
- Avoid broad head terms like “car insurance” unless your conversion tracking proves they pay.
- Target local and niche searches: “commercial insurance broker Mississauga”, “contractor insurance Ontario”.
- Send each ad to a matching quote form, not your home page.
- Track bound policies, not form fills, and import them from your CRM.

Speed to quote
Insurance shoppers often request several quotes at once. The brokerage that responds first with a clear quote often wins. Measure response time, use a CRM to assign leads instantly and follow up within the hour during business hours. See our insurance CRM service.
Retention is your cheapest growth
| Moment | What to do |
|---|---|
| Before renewal | Review coverage and explain any premium change proactively |
| Life events | New home, new car, new business: ask clients to tell you, and remind them |
| After a claim | Check in, and ask for a review if the experience was good |
| Cross selling | Offer home and auto bundles or umbrella coverage where it genuinely fits |

Referral partners
Mortgage brokers, realtors, car dealerships, accountants and commercial property managers all meet clients at the moment they need insurance. Build relationships on service, and follow your regulator’s rules on referral arrangements and disclosure.
