Coaching marketing guide
How coaches attract clients they can help
Canada Create™ provides life coach marketing and coaching advertising for life coaches, career coaches, executive and leadership coaches, business coaches, wellness and relationship coaches and coaching practices across Canada. We help you fill your calendar with discovery calls from the right people and turn those calls into paying clients, through a clear offer, a website that books, search, content, email and paid ads, all measured by signed clients rather than likes.
Coaching is one of the hardest services to market well. The buyer cannot see the product before they buy it, the word “coach” means something different to every visitor, and most people who are curious about coaching are not ready to pay for it yet. The coaches who build a steady practice make three things easy: understanding exactly who they help and with what, trusting the coach as a person, and taking a small first step.
Why marketing a coaching business is different
A plumber’s customer has a leak today. A coaching client usually has a problem they have lived with for months or years: a career that stalled, a business that outgrew its owner, a transition after a move, a divorce or a promotion. They rarely search “life coach” first. They search the problem (“how to change careers at 40”, “new manager struggling with team”, “burnout what to do”), read, watch, and only later look for help. Good coaching marketing meets people at the problem, not at the job title.
The second difference is trust. Coaching is personal, and buyers decide largely on whether they feel understood by you. Your voice, your story and the way you describe their situation matter more than a list of credentials. That is why a coaching website that sounds like every other coaching website (“unleash your potential”, “live your best life”) underperforms, and a site that names one audience and one outcome performs well.
The third difference is the sales step. Most coaching is sold in a conversation, usually a free discovery or consultation call. Marketing’s job is to fill that calendar with qualified people and to send them into the call already understanding your offer and price range. Coaching advertising that produces booked calls from people who cannot afford you is wasted spend.
Choose a niche and an offer people can say yes to
The most common reason coaching marketing fails is a vague offer. “I help people live more fulfilling lives” gives a reader nothing to recognize. Compare it with “I help mid career professionals in tech move into leadership roles within a year” or “I coach owners of service businesses with five to twenty staff who want to step out of daily operations”. The second version tells the right person they are in the right place, gives search engines something specific to rank, and makes ads cheaper because the audience is clear.
A strong coaching offer has a defined client, a defined result the client wants (described in their words, never promised), a defined format (number of sessions, length, one to one or group, online or in person) and a clear way to start. Many practices build a ladder: free content and a lead magnet at the top, a low cost workshop or group program in the middle and one to one or executive engagements at the top. Each step needs its own page and its own call to action.
Corporate buyers are a separate market. Executive and leadership coaching is often bought by HR leaders and learning and development teams who want to know your approach, your experience with organizations like theirs, how confidentiality is handled and how progress is reported. If you sell to companies, your marketing needs a B2B track with its own page, LinkedIn presence and outreach.
A coaching website that books discovery calls
Your website is where a curious reader becomes a booked call. For most coaches it should do five jobs:
- Name the person you help in the first screen, along with the problem and the change they want.
- Show the human. A real photo, your story told briefly and honestly, and a short video if you are comfortable on camera. People hire coaches they feel they know.
- Explain how coaching with you works: the format, the number of sessions, what happens between sessions and what a client is expected to do.
- Be clear about investment. You do not have to publish exact prices, but a “programs start at” line or a range filters out people who are not ready and saves your calls for real prospects.
- Make booking easy with an online calendar, a few qualifying questions and automatic reminders so fewer calls are missed.
Credentials belong on the page, described exactly as held. Coaching is largely unregulated in Canada, so buyers look for signals such as a credential from the International Coaching Federation or another recognized coaching body, relevant professional experience and genuine client feedback. List only what you actually hold, never imply a licence you do not have, and keep coaching clearly separate from therapy, counselling or medical advice. If someone needs mental health care, your site should say you refer them to a qualified professional. Our website design team builds coaching sites around these jobs.
Content and search: be found at the problem
Search engine optimization for a coach is mostly about content that answers the questions your future clients type before they know they want a coach. A career coach might publish guides on negotiating an offer, explaining a career gap or preparing for a panel interview. A business coach might write about hiring a first manager or setting prices. Each article ends with a gentle next step: a related lead magnet, a workshop or a discovery call.
Local search matters more than most coaches think. If you meet clients in person or want to be known in your city, a complete Google Business Profile with your real business name, your service area, real photos and genuine reviews helps you appear when someone searches “career coach near me” or “executive coach Toronto”. Reviews must come from real clients who chose to leave them; never offer anything in exchange. Many coaches combine local search with national online coaching, and the site structure should reflect both. Our SEO services start at CAD 1,500 a month, and AI answers matter too: our AI search optimization work makes your expertise easier for AI assistants to understand and cite.
Social media, video and personal brand
For coaches, social media is less about reach and more about letting the right people get to know how you think. LinkedIn works well for career, executive and business coaches; Instagram and YouTube suit wellness, relationship and life coaches; short video lets people hear your voice before they ever book. Pick one or two platforms you can sustain, post consistently and turn your best posts into longer website content.
Client stories need care. A testimonial must be real, shared with written permission and must not suggest typical results that are not typical. Never publish anything that identifies a client or the details of their situation without explicit consent, and remember that executive clients often cannot be named at all. Influencer and podcast partnerships need clear disclosure of any paid or gifted relationship. Our social media management team plans and produces content around these rules.
Email and lead magnets: the coaching sales engine
Most people who visit a coach’s site are not ready to book. Email is how you stay with them until they are. A useful lead magnet (a short guide, a self assessment, a workbook, a recorded masterclass) earns the address; a welcome sequence introduces you, shares a few ideas that genuinely help and invites the reader to a call or workshop when the time is right. A regular newsletter keeps you in mind for the months it takes many clients to decide.
Every commercial email in Canada must follow CASL: get consent before you add someone, identify yourself clearly and include a working unsubscribe. A contact who downloads a guide has given consent for what they signed up for; a list bought from someone else is not consent. Our email marketing service sets this up properly.
Paid advertising for coaches
Paid ads can fill a coaching calendar quickly, but only when the offer and the follow up are ready. Google Ads works for coaching with search intent, such as “executive coach Toronto” or “career coach for career change”. Meta and LinkedIn ads work better for promoting a free workshop, webinar or lead magnet, then nurturing those contacts by email. Sending cold traffic straight to “book a call” rarely works for coaching.
Health related claims are restricted on most ad platforms, and coaching that touches wellness, weight or mental health must avoid outcome claims and must not target people based on health conditions. Income claims for business coaching programs (“make six figures”) draw scrutiny from platforms and from the Competition Act if they cannot be supported. We write ads that describe the program honestly and send people to pages built for that ad. See Google Ads management and social media advertising.

Measure clients, not followers
The numbers that matter for a coaching business are simple: discovery calls booked, show rate, calls that become clients, the average value of a client and the cost to acquire one. We connect your booking calendar, your forms and your CRM so every client can be traced to the post, search, ad or referral that brought them. Many coaches use CS+, Canada Create’s CRM, to manage leads, reminders and follow up in one place. Once you know which channels bring paying clients, the budget moves there and the guesswork stops.

Life coach marketing questions
How do I market myself as a life coach?
Choose a specific audience and outcome, build a website that introduces you and books discovery calls, publish content that answers your audience's questions, collect email addresses with a useful lead magnet and add paid ads once the offer converts.
What is the best way for coaches to get clients?
For most coaches it is a mix of referrals, content that builds trust over time and a simple path to a discovery call. Ads speed things up once you know your offer and follow up work.
Do life coaches need a niche?
A niche makes marketing far easier. When a reader immediately sees that you help people like them with a problem they have, they book. Broad messages attract curiosity, not clients.
Does Google Ads work for coaching?
It works for searches with clear intent, such as executive or career coaching in a city. For broader coaching, ads that promote a workshop or guide and then follow up by email usually perform better.
Should I publish my coaching prices?
You do not have to publish exact fees, but a starting price or range helps people decide whether to book a call and keeps your calendar for serious prospects.
Can I use client testimonials?
Yes, if they are genuine, shared with written permission, do not identify confidential details and do not suggest results that are not typical.
Which social media platform is best for coaches?
LinkedIn suits career, executive and business coaches. Instagram and YouTube suit life, wellness and relationship coaches. Choose the one where your clients spend time and where you can post consistently.
How long does coaching marketing take to work?
Ads and outreach can produce calls within weeks once the offer is ready. Search and content build over several months and keep producing calls without extra ad spend.
Who owns the accounts?
You do. Your website, domain, ad accounts, email list and profiles are in your name, and we work inside them.
What does life coach marketing cost?
SEO starts at CAD 1,500 a month. Websites and full programs are quoted in writing after a free review, with ad spend paid directly to the platforms.
