How to Get a Google Knowledge Panel for Your Business (and Claim It)

Claim your panel: a search results card with a highlighted info panel and a red verified checkmark

Updated October 2026 · 13 min read

A Google Knowledge Panel is the information box Google shows beside desktop results, or near the top on mobile, when it recognizes a person, brand or organization as a distinct entity. You cannot buy one or switch one on. Google generates it from its Knowledge Graph once it is confident about who you are. Your job is to give Google consistent, trustworthy facts about your business in the places it reads, and then to claim the panel when it appears so you can keep it accurate.

For most local businesses, the panel people see when they search the business name is actually the Google Business Profile, which eligible businesses can create and manage. The brand Knowledge Panel is a separate, harder-earned result. This guide covers both, in the order a Canadian business should work on them.

Knowledge Panel or Google Business Profile?

Search your business name on Google and look at the box on the right. If it shows a map, hours, reviews, directions and a phone button, that is your Google Business Profile. It is tied to a physical location or service area and you manage it in Google’s Business Profile tools. If it shows a description (often drawn from Wikipedia), a logo, founders, social profiles and a “People also search for” row, without a map, that is a Knowledge Panel built from the Knowledge Graph.

Want this handled for your business?

We plan and deliver Google Business Profile management for businesses in Toronto and across Canada, scoped in writing after a free review.

If your business is eligible and does not have a verified Google Business Profile yet, start there. It is the panel that drives calls and visits for local businesses, and its facts feed the same picture of your business that the Knowledge Graph builds. Our Google Business Profile management team sets up, verifies and optimizes profiles for Canadian businesses.

Why a Knowledge Panel matters more in 2026

A brand panel can make key information prominent in a branded search. Verified representatives can suggest corrections to facts such as the founding year, logo and official profiles; Google reviews the changes. It also matters for AI search. Google’s AI Overviews and assistants such as ChatGPT and Gemini lean on entity data when they describe a company. When your entity facts are clear and consistent, those answers are more likely to describe your business correctly, which is the same groundwork behind getting cited by AI search.

Step 1: Check whether Google knows your business

  1. Search your exact business name, then your name plus your city, then your founder’s name. Note which panels appear.
  2. Search your brand in Google Images and see whether your logo is associated with your name.
  3. If you are technical, use Google’s entity-search tools to look for your business. Google directs new API users to Cloud Enterprise Knowledge Graph; a matching entity result is not a promise that a Knowledge Panel will appear.

An entity-search match and a visible Knowledge Panel are different outputs. The steps below make your business information clearer and easier to verify; Google decides whether to display a panel.

Step 2: Build one clear entity home

Google needs one page it can treat as the authoritative source about your business. For most companies that is the home page or the About page. That page should state, in plain text, your legal and trading name, what you do, where you are based, when you were founded, who founded or leads the company and links to your official profiles.

Then describe the same facts in structured data. Add Organization (or LocalBusiness) schema in JSON-LD with your name, logo, URL, address, founding date, founder and a sameAs list pointing to every official profile: LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, your Google Business Profile map link, Crunchbase and industry directories. If a founder is part of the brand, give them a Person entity on their own profile page and connect the two. Validate the markup with Google’s Rich Results Test and Schema.org’s validator, and keep it identical everywhere it appears.

Step 3: Make your facts consistent everywhere

Knowledge Graph confidence comes from agreement between sources. Audit every profile you control and make the following identical across all of them:

  • Business name, using the real-world name and the naming rules of each platform. Do not add a trademark symbol or other text to a Google Business Profile name unless Google permits it.
  • Accurate address and phone details, respecting service-area businesses’ address-display rules.
  • Founding year and founder names.
  • Logo file and short description.
  • Website URL, using the same version (https, with or without www) everywhere.

Pay attention to Canadian sources too: your provincial or federal business registry listing, the Better Business Bureau, chambers of commerce, industry associations and Canadian business directories. Our guide to local citations explains how to clean these up without creating duplicates.

Step 4: Earn independent mentions

Your own website and profiles tell Google what you say about yourself. Independent sources confirm it. The mentions that move the needle are the ones a journalist, association or reputable publication would write anyway:

  • Coverage in local or trade news, such as a launch, an expansion or expert commentary.
  • Membership listings in professional and industry associations.
  • Speaking pages for conferences and events.
  • Podcast and interview appearances with a show page that names you and links to your site.
  • Recognition from independent bodies, where it genuinely applies to you.

Paid “knowledge panel services” that create thin profiles on dozens of low-quality sites rarely help and can create conflicting facts that are hard to clean up later.

Step 5: Use Wikidata and Wikipedia carefully

Wikidata, the structured database behind Wikipedia, is one of the sources Google reads. A Wikidata item can help Google connect your profiles, but Wikidata has notability rules: an item needs independent, reliable references or a clear structural need. Items created only for promotion may be deleted under Wikidata’s notability rules.

Wikipedia is stricter still. Do not write or pay someone to write your own Wikipedia article. Wikipedia’s conflict-of-interest rules discourage it, and articles about companies without significant independent coverage are usually removed. If your business genuinely meets Wikipedia’s notability guidelines, independent editors may create an article over time. For most small and mid-sized businesses, a panel built from your own entity home, consistent profiles and independent mentions is the realistic path.

Step 6: Claim this knowledge panel once it appears

  1. Sign in to a Google Account you control on behalf of the business.
  2. Search for your business name and find the panel.
  3. Select Claim this knowledge panel if that option is available. It may appear at the bottom, in the About section or in the mobile menu; not all panels are claimable.
  4. Follow the verification steps. Google typically asks you to sign in to one of the official profiles listed on the panel, such as your YouTube channel or Search Console property, or to submit identity details for review.
  5. Once verified, you can suggest changes to facts, the featured image and the description. Google reviews each suggestion and decides whether to apply it.

Google’s own instructions are on its Knowledge Panel verification help page.

How to fix wrong information in a Knowledge Panel

Verified representatives get the fastest route: use the suggest-edit option and point to a public source that shows the correct fact. If you are not verified, select Feedback at the bottom of the panel, choose the incorrect item and explain the correction. In both cases, fix the source first. If an old directory listing, a news article or a Wikipedia page has the wrong founding year, Google will keep reading it until it changes.

How long it takes

There is no fixed timeline. Some brands see a panel within months of cleaning up their entity signals and earning press; others never get a brand panel because Google does not yet see enough independent evidence. What you can control is the quality and consistency of the facts. The same information audit also helps you maintain accurate website and local-profile details while you wait.

A practical checklist for Canadian businesses

  • Verified Google Business Profile with correct category, hours, photos and service area.
  • One entity home page with plain-text facts and complete Organization schema.
  • sameAs links to every official profile, all of which link back to your website.
  • Identical name, address, phone and founding year across registries, BBB, associations and directories.
  • A founder or leadership profile page with Person schema, if your people are part of the brand.
  • A plan to earn three to five genuine independent mentions this year.
  • A monthly search of your brand name to spot new panels and incorrect facts.

Entity work sits between technical SEO, PR and local search, which is why it often falls between the cracks. Our SEO team handles the schema and entity audit, and our Google Business Profile management service keeps the panel customers actually click on accurate and active.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Google Knowledge Panel?

It is an information box Google generates from its Knowledge Graph when it recognizes a person, brand or organization as a distinct entity. It shows facts such as a description, logo, founders and official profiles.

Is a Knowledge Panel the same as a Google Business Profile?

No. A Google Business Profile is the local panel with a map, hours and reviews that you create and verify yourself. A Knowledge Panel is generated by Google for recognized entities and can only be claimed once it exists. Our Google Business Profile management service handles the local one.

How do I get a Knowledge Panel for my business?

Build one clear entity home with Organization schema, keep your name, address, phone and founding facts identical across every profile and directory, and earn genuine independent mentions. Google decides whether a panel appears; these steps do not guarantee one.

How do I claim my Google Knowledge Panel?

Sign in to a Google Account, search your business name, select Claim this knowledge panel if the option is available and verify through one of your official profiles or by submitting identity details.

Why don't I see the Claim this knowledge panel option?

The option appears only on panels Google lets an entity claim, and only when you are signed in to a Google Account. Many local businesses see a Google Business Profile instead, which is claimed through Business Profile verification, not the Knowledge Panel flow. If a brand panel has no claim option, keep your facts consistent and check again later.

Can I pay to get a Knowledge Panel?

No. Google does not sell Knowledge Panels. Services that mass-create thin profiles rarely help and can spread conflicting facts that are hard to clean up.

Do I need a Wikipedia page to get a Knowledge Panel?

No. Wikipedia is one source Google reads, but many businesses have panels without one. Do not write your own Wikipedia article, because conflict-of-interest and notability rules usually lead to its removal.

How do I fix wrong information in my Knowledge Panel?

Verified representatives can suggest edits directly. Anyone can use the Feedback link at the bottom of the panel. Fix the wrong fact at its source too, or Google will keep reading it.

How long does it take to get a Knowledge Panel?

There is no fixed timeline. It depends on how consistent your entity facts are and how much independent evidence Google finds about your business.

Does schema markup help with a Knowledge Panel?

Yes. Organization or LocalBusiness schema with a complete sameAs list helps Google connect your website to your official profiles. Our SEO team audits and fixes entity markup.

Why does my Knowledge Panel disappear sometimes?

Panels can come and go as Google's confidence changes, for example when sources disagree or a key source is removed. Keep the facts accurate, but Google controls whether the panel appears and which information it shows.
