Wix guide for owners

How to design, fix and run a Wix website

Wix website design is the work of planning, designing and building a business website on Wix, or taking a Wix site an owner built themselves and making it look professional, load properly on phones and get found. Many people who look for a Wix website designer already have a site: they picked a template one weekend, added their services and photos, and now the result looks homemade next to competitors. Canada Create is a Toronto agency at 126 Willowdale Avenue serving businesses across Canada; we design new Wix sites, fix and redesign existing ones, set up bookings, stores and events, configure the search settings, train the owner and hand everything over with the account in the owner’s name.

A salon owner who set up a Wix site to show prices and hours notices that new clients still phone to ask what services she offers. A contractor’s site has a beautiful home page and a services page that is one paragraph long. A restaurant’s menu is a photo of the printed menu that nobody can read on a phone. A tutoring business added a booking app, but the confirmation emails still show the default wording. These owners are not looking for a new platform; they want the Wix site they have, or a fresh one on Wix, to look and work like a professional site.

What a professional result means to them

In plain terms, owners ask for four things: a site that does not look like a template, a phone view that is not broken, a site that turns up when locals search for what they do, and the confidence to keep editing it themselves. Some also want a new feature, such as online booking, gift cards, event tickets or a small shop, added without starting over.

Questions we ask first

Is the current site on Wix Editor or Wix Studio? Who set it up, and whose login owns it? Which apps are installed and which are actually used? What do visitors need to do: book, call, order, register, request a quote? Do any pages bring in visitors from Google today that must be protected during a redesign? The answers decide whether we repair, redesign or rebuild.

Wix Editor or Wix Studio

Wix offers two building environments, and the choice affects how a site is designed and how easily it can be maintained. Wix Editor is the long standing drag and drop editor many owners have used: you place elements on the page freely, and the phone version is adjusted in its own mobile view. Wix Studio is aimed at designers and agencies, with responsive layout tools that let a design adapt across screen sizes from one layout, plus tools for working on several client sites.

How we choose between them

For an owner who already knows Wix Editor and plans to make most edits personally, staying in the Editor is often the practical choice. For a new build with a more custom design, several page templates and a site that must look right on every width, Wix Studio usually gives a cleaner result. We explain the trade off in plain words and recommend one before any design starts, because moving an existing site between the two is not a simple switch.

A note on templates

On a site built in Wix Editor, the template chosen at the start cannot simply be swapped for another one later. A new look comes from redesigning the pages within the existing site, or from building a new site and moving the content across. We decide which is cleaner for your site before quoting.

Where Wix works well and where it struggles

Wix is a hosted platform: it handles the hosting, the software and security updates, and you pay it a subscription. It works well for local service businesses that need clear service pages, a phone number that can be tapped and a contact form, for salons, spas and fitness studios that take bookings, for restaurants with menus and events, for small shops with a manageable product range, and for event organizers selling tickets to a handful of dates a year.

When another route is better

Wix becomes harder to justify for a store with a very large catalogue and complex variants, for a site that has to sync constantly with inventory, practice management or accounting systems, or for features that need custom programming beyond what the platform allows. When that is the case, we say so and suggest our ecommerce website development or CMS website development instead. The owner’s goals decide the platform, not the other way round.

Fixing a Wix site you built yourself

Many Wix projects start with a site the owner made. Before changing anything, we review it page by page: what visitors see first on a phone, whether the services and prices are written as text or trapped in images, whether every page has its own title and description, which apps are installed and unused, how heavy the images and animations are, and whether the contact form actually reaches someone.

Common problems on owner built Wix sites

  • Text placed in images, such as menus, price lists or flyers, which phones shrink and search engines cannot read.
  • A desktop layout that looks fine but a mobile view with overlapping text, hidden buttons or tiny fonts.
  • Several different fonts and colours added over time, so pages look like different businesses.
  • One long page that tries to explain every service, instead of a page for each main service.
  • Default page titles, such as the business name alone on every page, and missing image descriptions.
  • Unused apps and heavy video backgrounds that slow the site down.
  • A contact form that sends messages to an old email address nobody checks.

Repair or redesign

Sometimes a few days of focused repair is enough: clean typography, a fixed mobile view, rewritten service pages and proper search settings. Other times the structure is too tangled and a redesign is quicker. Our website redesign planning covers the bigger rethink when the problem is the whole site rather than the details.

Page planning and a look that is your own

A Wix site looks like a template when it keeps the template’s layout, stock photos, sample wording and default fonts. It starts to look like your business when the pages are planned around what your customers need and the design is built from your own brand.

Page planning

We plan a page for each main service, so a renovation contractor has separate pages for kitchens, basements and bathrooms, and a salon has pages for colour, cuts and treatments. Each page answers the questions customers ask before calling, shows real photos of your work and ends with one clear next step. The home page introduces the business and points to those pages rather than trying to say everything.

Your brand on every page

We set the site’s colours, fonts and button styles once, then build every page from them so the site holds together. If your logo is a low resolution file or the colours have drifted, our graphic design team can tidy the logo and visual pieces before the build. Real photos of your team, your space and your work do more for a Wix site than any effect or animation.

Bookings, online stores and events

Wix has its own apps for bookings, online stores and events, which add those features to a site without custom programming. Which features you can use depends on the Wix plan you choose, so we confirm that before planning the pages.

Bookings for salons, studios and services

For a salon, spa, fitness studio, tutor or consultant, we set up the services, staff availability you choose, booking rules, confirmation and reminder messages in your own wording, and booking buttons where visitors look for them. Intake questions are kept to what you actually need, especially for any business that might otherwise collect health or personal details.

A small online store

For a gift shop, a bakery taking holiday orders or a maker selling a few dozen items, we set up products with clear photos, categories, shipping and local pickup, tax settings as you instruct and branded order emails. When a store grows to a large catalogue with many variants, a store built on a dedicated commerce platform is usually the better next step.

Events and tickets

For a venue, a studio running workshops or an organizer with seasonal events, event pages list the date, location, what is included and how to register or buy a ticket, with confirmation messages that match the brand.

Editing the mobile layout

Many visitors meet a local business on a phone first, and this is where owner built Wix sites most often break. In Wix Editor, the mobile view is adjusted separately from the desktop: elements can be rearranged, resized or hidden on mobile without changing the desktop page. That flexibility is useful, but it also means a desktop change can leave the mobile page out of order if nobody checks it.

What we fix on phones

We rebuild the mobile view of every page so text is readable without zooming, the phone number and booking button are easy to tap, images are cropped for a narrow screen and nothing overlaps. In Wix Studio, we design with responsive breakpoints so the layout adapts across widths. Either way, every page is checked on real phones before launch, and we show you how to check the mobile view after your own edits.

Wix search settings and page speed

Wix includes the search settings each page needs. We write a title and description for every page, set clean page URLs, add alt text to images, use the redirect settings when page addresses change, add structured data basics where it helps, such as your business name, address and hours, and connect the site to Google’s search tools. We never promise rankings or traffic; search results depend on your content, your competitors and factors no designer controls.

Being found in your area

A local business site should state its address, service areas and hours in plain text that matches its Google Business Profile. Our SEO services and Google Business Profile help handle the wider search work beyond the site’s settings.

Page speed basics

The usual causes of a slow Wix site are full size photos, autoplay video backgrounds, large animated galleries and apps that load on every page. We resize images, remove apps that are not used, replace heavy effects with simpler layouts and keep fonts to a small set, so the site loads quickly on a phone.

Moving a site onto or off Wix

Owners move onto Wix to get a site they can edit easily, and some move off Wix when they need more custom functionality. The search visibility the old site earned is what needs protecting in both directions.

Moving onto Wix

We list every page of the old site, decide what moves, merges or retires, rebuild the content in the new Wix design, carry over titles and descriptions that work and redirect each old address to its new page. After launch we check that old links land on the right pages.

Moving off Wix

A Wix site cannot be exported as files and installed on another platform, so leaving Wix means rebuilding the design and moving the content page by page. We plan the new structure, keep page addresses where possible and redirect the rest. We also help move the domain if it was registered through Wix, so it ends up in your business’s name with the registrar you choose.

Forms, accessibility and privacy

Every contact, quote and booking form should send to an address someone checks, show a clear confirmation and collect only what you need. A site that collects personal information needs a privacy policy and consent wording that matches what you do with the data. Newsletter signups fall under CASL, which in general terms means recorded consent, clear sender identification and a working unsubscribe in every email; our email marketing services cover what happens after someone subscribes.

Businesses in Ontario have accessibility obligations under AODA, and the practical standard for a website is WCAG. On a Wix site that means enough colour contrast, real text instead of text in images, alt text, headings in a logical order, clear button and link labels, labelled form fields and pages that work with a keyboard. Sites with visitors in Quebec should plan for Quebec Law 25 and the Charter of the French Language, which usually means French versions of the pages and forms Quebec visitors use. Your Wix subscription, domain and any paid apps are paid to the platform. This is a marketing observation, not legal advice.

How a Wix project runs

Every Wix project begins with a free review: we open your existing site in desktop and mobile view, list the installed apps and note what works. A custom proposal follows, saying whether we recommend a repair, a redesign or a new build, and which apps, search settings and training are included, with fees quoted in writing. Once approved, the work happens in your own Wix account, starting with the pages that matter most for bookings or calls, and nothing is published until you have seen it on your own phone.

Training the owner

Before handover, we run a working session on your own site: editing text and photos, updating a price or service, adding a booking slot, checking the mobile view after an edit and publishing changes. You also receive a short written guide to your site’s pages, apps and styles.

Accounts in your name

The Wix account, the site, the domain and the billing belong to your business. We work as a collaborator you invite, and if the site was built under someone else’s account, we help transfer it to yours. Ongoing updates are available through our website care and maintenance if you would rather not edit it yourself. For the wider picture of design work, see our web design services in Toronto and Toronto web development.

What a Wix website designer costs

Fixing the mobile view and search settings on a five page salon site is a different job from building a new Wix Studio site with bookings, a shop and two languages. After a free consultation and a look at your current site, we send a written quote for the work. Wix bills your business directly for the site subscription, and the domain and any paid apps are also paid to the platform or registrar, outside our fees.

What drives the cost

  • Whether the work is a repair of your own site, a redesign within it or a new build.
  • Wix Editor or Wix Studio, and how many unique page layouts the design needs.
  • Booking, store or event setup, and the number of services, products or dates.
  • How much text and photography has to be written or produced.
  • A move onto or off Wix, with redirects for every old page.
  • English and French versions, and how much training your team needs.

Questions to ask a Wix web designer

Plenty of people build Wix sites, so ask questions that show whether a designer will look after your business, not only the look of the home page.

  • Who owns the accounts? The answer should be you: the Wix account, the site and the domain stay in your business’s name.
  • Will you work in Wix Editor or Wix Studio, and why for my site?
  • Can my current site be repaired, or does it need a rebuild, and how will you decide?
  • How will you fix the mobile layout, and how do I keep it right after my own edits?
  • Which search settings and redirects will you set before launch?
  • How will you check accessibility, and what training will I get?

Be wary of anyone who builds the site under their own account, promises a first page position on Google, or adds apps you did not ask for. Each one costs the owner later.

Wix website design questions

Can a designer redesign a Wix site I built myself?

Yes, many Wix projects start with a site the owner made over a weekend. A designer reviews it page by page, checking the phone view, whether prices and menus are trapped in images, page titles, unused apps and whether the contact form reaches anyone. The result is either a repair of the existing site or a redesign, and the Wix account stays in your name.

Should I repair or redesign my Wix website?

Repair fits a site whose structure is sound but whose details are off, such as clashing fonts, a broken mobile view, thin service pages and default page titles. A redesign fits when the structure is too tangled, for example one long page trying to explain every service. On Wix Editor the original template cannot simply be swapped later, so a new look means redesigning the pages or building a new site and moving the content across.

What does Wix website design cost in Toronto?

Wix pricing turns on whether the job is a repair of an owner built site, a redesign, a new build or a site with bookings, a store or events, and on how many pages and apps are involved. Your Wix subscription, domain and paid apps are paid to Wix directly and shown apart from design fees. A free consultation about your site comes before any Wix fee, which we then state in writing.

Should my business site use Wix Editor or Wix Studio?

An owner who already knows Wix Editor and plans to make most edits personally is often better off staying there. A new build with a more custom design, several page templates and layouts that must adapt to every screen width usually comes out cleaner in Wix Studio. Moving an existing site between the two is not a simple switch, so the choice is made before any design starts.

Can I change my Wix website design template later?

On a site built in Wix Editor, the template chosen at the start cannot be swapped for another one afterward. A fresh look comes from redesigning the pages inside the existing site, or from building a new site and moving the content across. A Wix site stops looking like a template once its sample wording, stock photos and default fonts give way to your own brand and real photos.

Which types of business websites suit Wix?

Wix suits local service businesses that need clear service pages, a tappable phone number and a contact form. It also works for salons, spas and studios that take bookings, restaurants with menus and events, small shops with a manageable product range and organizers selling tickets to a few dates a year. A very large catalogue, constant syncing with inventory or accounting systems, or custom programming usually points to another platform.

What makes a Wix site look professional?

Owners usually want four things: a site free of obvious template traces, a phone view that is not broken, a site that turns up in local searches and the confidence to keep editing it. That comes from a page for each main service, one set of colours, fonts and button styles used everywhere, and real photos of your team and work. Titles, descriptions, alt text and redirects are set on every page before launch.

Is a free Wix plan enough for a business website design?

Which Wix features you can use, including bookings, stores and events, depends on the plan you choose, so the plan is confirmed before any pages are designed. Wix is a hosted platform: it handles hosting, software and security updates in return for a subscription. That subscription, the domain and any paid apps are paid to Wix in your name.

How do I find a Wix website designer near me in Toronto?

Ask whether they will start with a page by page review, how they choose between Wix Editor and Wix Studio and whether you will get training and a written guide so you can edit the site yourself. Confirm the Wix account, domain and apps will be held in your name. Canada Create, whose office is on Willowdale Avenue in North York, designs and fixes Wix sites for businesses across Canada and sends a reply to Wix enquiries by the next business day.
