Gym marketing
How gym advertising works
Canada Create™ runs gym marketing and advertising for independent gyms, fitness studios, boutique classes, martial arts schools and personal training businesses across Canada. The short answer to how gyms attract members: a clear offer for a defined audience, local search visibility, Meta and Google ads that send people to a simple booking path, fast follow up on every lead, and a retention program that keeps members long enough to refer friends.
Gym advertising has changed. Discount chains own the price conversation, and boutique studios compete on experience. Independent gyms win by being specific: the right coaching, community and results for a particular kind of member, explained clearly and followed up quickly. This page explains how we build that system for fitness businesses.
How people choose a gym
Most people join a gym after a trigger: a doctor’s comment, a milestone birthday, a breakup, a new job, a move or a photo they did not like. They search for gyms near them, scroll Instagram, ask friends and compare two or three options. What decides it is rarely the equipment list. They want to know:
- Will I feel comfortable here, or intimidated?
- Is there someone to help me start?
- Do the class times and location fit my week?
- What does it cost, including fees?
- Do people like me get results here?
Every piece of gym marketing should answer those questions for the specific member you want. A strength gym for busy parents, a women’s studio, a boxing club for teens and adults, and a 24 hour gym for shift workers all need different messages.
Positioning and offers that fill the schedule
Positioning is the sentence that tells the right person this gym is for them. “Small group strength coaching for adults over 40 who have never lifted” is a position. “Best gym in town” is not, and superlatives without proof are risky under the Competition Act anyway.
Entry offers lower the barrier for new members. Common options:
| Offer | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Free intro session or class | Coaching and class based gyms | Needs fast booking and a great first experience |
| Short paid starter program | Personal training and small group | Clear transition into membership |
| Week or two week pass | Open gyms and studios | Follow up during the pass, not after |
| Challenge or bootcamp | Seasonal peaks such as January and September | Truthful results claims only |
| Corporate or community partnership | Local employers, schools, clubs | Track each partner’s referrals |
The best offer is the one your staff can deliver brilliantly and convert into a membership. We test offers by booked visits and memberships, not by clicks.
Local search and Google Business Profile
“Gym near me” and its variations are some of the most common local searches, and the map results capture much of the attention. Your Google Business Profile needs your real business name with no added keywords, the right primary category (gym, fitness centre, boxing gym, yoga studio), accurate hours, class schedule links, photos of the real space and members who have given permission, and a steady stream of genuine reviews. Never offer incentives for reviews; Google removes them and fake reviews are treated as deceptive marketing.
Our local SEO and SEO work then builds pages for each program (strength training, group classes, personal training, boxing, yoga, kids and teens) and each location, so you appear for the specific things people search.
Meta and Google ads for gyms
Meta ads: Facebook and Instagram
Meta is where most gyms find new members. Ads reach people by location and interests, and short videos of real classes, coaches and members (with consent) outperform polished stock footage. Lead forms inside Facebook and Instagram are quick, but they work only if someone calls or texts within minutes. Never target or write ads that imply knowledge of a person’s health condition or body; Meta restricts that and it puts people off.
Google Ads for high intent searches
People searching “gym near me,” “personal trainer,” “boxing classes” or “women’s gym” are already looking. Google Ads campaigns built around those searches, with job and equipment shopping searches excluded, send traffic to the matching program page with a booking calendar.
Video and YouTube
Short instructional videos and member stories (with written consent) help on YouTube and in remarketing. They also answer “will I feel comfortable here?” better than any written page.
Ad spend is paid directly to the platforms. We manage campaigns and report on cost per booked visit and cost per new member, the numbers that matter. Our social media ads service covers Meta campaigns in more depth.
Website and booking path
A gym website has one main job: get the right visitor to book a first visit. We build fitness websites (see our web design service) with:
- A first screen that says who the gym is for and what to do next.
- Program pages with schedules, coaches and what a first session looks like.
- Membership options with all mandatory fees shown, so there are no surprises.
- Online booking for intro sessions and classes, connected to your scheduling software.
- Real photos and coach profiles.
- Fast mobile pages, accessibility to WCAG standards and clear location details.
Lead follow up and sales
Most gyms lose more members to slow follow up than to competitors. A lead who fills in a form at 8 pm and hears back two days later has usually moved on. We connect every lead source to CS+, Canada Create’s CRM, or to the gym management software you use, with instant text and email replies, reminders before booked visits and a simple pipeline: lead, booked, visited, joined. See our gym sales CRM page for the full setup. Staff scripts focus on understanding the person’s goals, not pressure.
Text and email follow up must respect CASL: consent, sender identification and an unsubscribe. Transactional messages such as booking confirmations are kept separate from promotional ones.
Social media and content
Social media is your gym’s shop window. What works:
- Coaches explaining exercises and answering common beginner questions.
- Behind the scenes of classes and community events.
- Member milestones and stories, always with written consent and without exaggerated results.
- Schedule updates, new programs and events.
Our social media management service plans, produces and posts content so your coaches can coach.
Membership rules and claims
Gym marketing in Canada is shaped by consumer protection law. In Ontario, for memberships where $50 or more is paid upfront, consumers get a 10 day cooling off period after receiving the written agreement, terms are limited to one year, initiation fees are capped at twice the annual fee, a monthly instalment option must be offered, and members must be told before an automatic renewal within a set window. Not for profit, member owned and municipal facilities are exempt. Other provinces have their own rules. Your advertised prices should include all mandatory fees, since hidden fees are addressed in the Competition Act. Fitness results claims must be truthful and typical, and before and after images need written consent and must not mislead. Influencer posts need clear disclosure of any material connection. Check the current rules on Ontario’s gym membership page; this is general information, not legal advice.
Retention and referrals
Acquisition gets attention, but retention decides profit. A member who stays two years is worth many times a member who leaves after two months, and long staying members bring friends. Marketing supports retention through onboarding sequences in the first 30 days, attendance check ins for members who stop coming, community events, progress milestones and referral programs that reward members with perks inside the gym. Every retained member makes your advertising budget go further.
Budgets and return
Gym marketing costs depend on locations, programs, channels and how much content is produced. We separate three parts:
| Cost part | What it covers | How it is priced |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Offer, tracking, booking path, CRM connection, website work | Quoted in writing by scope |
| Monthly management | SEO, ads management, content, follow up automation, reporting | SEO from CAD 1,500/month; other work quoted in writing |
| Ad spend | Meta, Google and YouTube media | Paid directly to the platforms |
To judge return, work out member lifetime value: average monthly dues times the average number of months members stay, plus personal training and retail. Divide your marketing cost by new members to get cost per member. If cost per member is well below lifetime value, the program is working, and improving retention makes every channel more affordable.
Personal trainer marketing
Independent personal trainers and small training studios need the same building blocks at a smaller scale: a clear niche, a Google Business Profile if you have a physical studio, a simple website with booking, short videos that show your coaching style, consistent follow up and a referral habit. Trainers working inside another gym should follow that gym’s rules on marketing to its members.
