Get verified: a smartphone with a red verified badge shield bursting from the screen beside a chrome map pin

Google Local Services Ads (LSAs) can appear prominently in local search results, with a Google Verified badge for eligible advertisers who complete the required checks. Unlike regular Google Ads, you pay for a lead, usually a call or message from a customer, not for a click. In Canada, “local services ads” draws about 2,400 searches a month and “Google Local Services Ads” about 1,300. These are estimates of searches, not individual people, and they do not show how many searchers are business owners. This guide explains how LSAs work in Canada in 2026, what changed with Google Verified, how leads are charged and how to rank higher.

What changed: Google Verified

Google began its transition to a single Google Verified badge on October 20, 2025. The earlier badge labels were replaced for eligible advertisers, and the associated Google Guarantee money-back program was discontinued during the transition. Screening still depends on your category and location and can include business registration, licences, insurance and background checks.

If your marketing, website or vehicle wraps still say “Google Guaranteed”, update them, since the badge no longer exists.

How Local Services Ads work

  1. Check eligibility: categories and availability vary by country and city. Use Google’s eligibility check before you plan around LSAs.
  2. Create a profile: services, service areas, hours, licences and insurance.
  3. Pass screening: Google verifies the business and, where required, the people who do the work.
  4. Set a budget and bidding: Google charges for leads it classifies as valid. Weekly spend can exceed the average weekly budget, subject to the monthly maximum; a charged lead is not a booked job.
  5. Answer leads: calls and messages come through the LSA platform, where you can track and rate them.

Which businesses can use them

LSAs started with home services and expanded to many other categories. Google’s current Canada list includes home service categories such as plumbers, electricians, HVAC, roofers, locksmiths, cleaners and movers. It does not list lawyers; do not assume that a category offered in another country is available in Canada. Google’s category list changes, so check the eligibility tool for your trade and city.

What a lead costs

There is no fixed price. Cost per lead depends on your category, city, competition and bidding settings. High Search Ads CPC can flag a commercially competitive service category, but it does not establish the price of an LSA lead. Compare actual LSA charges and booked jobs in your market. Our home services marketing guide shows Canadian CPCs by trade for comparison.

Disputing bad leads

Review lead charges, automatic credits and the Lead Feedback Survey in your account. Google reassesses charged leads and may credit those it determines are low quality. Its current policy does not support credits for a job type or geographic area you do not serve, and credits are unavailable for some categories. Keep your services and service areas accurate, and check the current credit rules rather than assuming every unsuitable lead can be refunded.

How to rank higher in Local Services Ads

  • Reviews: the number and rating of reviews matter. Ask every customer.
  • Responsiveness: answer calls and reply to messages fast. Missed calls can affect your responsiveness signal.
  • Proximity: the customer’s location and the relevance of your services form part of the auction context.
  • Hours: keep hours and ad schedules accurate, and enable only the contact routes you can support.
  • Budget and bidding: enough budget to stay active through the day.
  • Complete profile: every service and area you cover, with accurate details.

Common mistakes

  1. Letting calls go to voicemail during business hours.
  2. Ignoring lead charges, automatic credits and lead feedback.
  3. Service areas set too wide for profitable travel.
  4. Too few reviews compared with competitors.
  5. Old “Google Guaranteed” references left on the website and trucks.

Frequently asked questions

What are Google Local Services Ads?

Ads that can appear prominently in local service searches. Eligible verified advertisers can display a Google Verified badge. You pay for valid leads, such as calls or messages, rather than clicks.

Is Google Guaranteed still available?

Google transitioned the earlier badges to Google Verified for eligible advertisers in 2025 and discontinued the associated money-back program. Confirm your current verification status before using badge claims.

Are Local Services Ads available in Canada?

Yes, for many categories and cities. Availability varies, so check Google's eligibility tool for your trade and location.

How much does a Local Services Ads lead cost?

It depends on your category, city, competition and bidding. Compare actual lead costs and booked jobs in your account; Search Ads CPC is not an LSA lead-price forecast.

Can I dispute a bad lead?

Google uses automatic lead assessment and credits, with a Lead Feedback Survey for reporting poor-quality leads. A credit is not guaranteed; job-type-not-serviced and area-not-serviced credits are no longer supported.

How do I rank higher in Local Services Ads?

Improve profile quality, seek genuine reviews without incentives or selection by sentiment, respond promptly, and keep services and hours accurate. Bids, search context and profile quality affect the auction; no position is guaranteed.

Should I run Local Services Ads and Google Ads together?

Test both where your business is eligible, then compare recorded cost per booked job, lead quality and capacity. The right mix depends on your results and budget.

What does Google Verified screening check?

It depends on the category and location, and can include business registration, licences, insurance and background checks.

Do Local Services Ads work for lawyers in Canada?

Google's current Canada category list does not include lawyers. Check the eligibility tool for your specific business and location rather than relying on another country's category list.

Why did my Local Services Ads ranking drop?

Review bids, budget limits, response handling, profile quality and the search context. These are diagnostic checks; the report alone may not identify one cause for a ranking change.
