This page explains what a digital marketing agency does, channel by channel, so a Canadian business owner or marketing lead can decide what to hire, from whom and in what order. It covers search, paid ads, social, email, content, websites, CRM and AI, then the harder questions: full service or single channel, agency or in-house, how to read a monthly report and what drives the fee. Canada Create™ is a Toronto digital agency with an office at 126 Willowdale Avenue, Suite 3, serving businesses across Canada since 2008. If you want the short version of who we are, start at the Canada Create™ home page; if you want the long one, read on.

What a digital marketing agency actually does
A digital marketing agency is a team you hire to bring the right people to your business online, turn their interest into enquiries or sales, and show you which spending produced what. Underneath that sentence sit three jobs, and a good agency does all three, even when it only runs one channel for you.
Plan
Before anything runs, someone has to decide who you are trying to reach, what they type or scroll past when they need you, what you can afford to pay for a customer, and which channels deserve the first dollar. For a plumber that answer usually starts with Google Maps and search ads on urgent terms. For a software firm selling to finance teams it usually starts with LinkedIn, content and a long email follow up. The plan is written down, priced and agreed before a single campaign is built.
Run the channels
Then the work itself: pages written and optimized, ads built and managed, posts published, emails sent, forms connected to a CRM, call tracking set up, reviews answered. This is the part most people picture when they think of an agency, and it is the part that takes the most hours every month.
Measure and adjust
Finally, someone has to connect the money in to the leads out. That means tracking calls, form submissions, bookings and sales back to the channel and campaign that produced them, reading the numbers every month and moving budget from what is not working to what is. An agency that runs channels without this step is guessing with your money.
The full list of what we offer sits on our services overview. The sections below walk through each family in turn, with a link to the hub page where we explain it in depth.
Search: SEO, local SEO and Google Ads
Search is where most buying starts. Someone has a problem, types it into Google or asks a voice assistant, and picks from what appears. A digital marketing agency works on three parts of that page: the organic results, the map pack and the paid ads.
Search engine optimization
SEO is the work of earning a place in the organic results for the searches your buyers make. It covers the technical health of the site (speed, structure, indexing), pages written for real questions, internal linking, and the reputation signals that come from other sites mentioning you. It builds slowly and keeps working when you stop paying for clicks, which is why most firms treat it as a monthly program. Our search engine optimization service starts from CAD 1,500/month, and the scope behind that fee is set out in writing.
Local SEO and Google Business Profile
For any business that serves a city or a neighbourhood, the map pack often matters more than the organic links below it. Ranking there depends on a complete and accurate Google Business Profile, the right primary category, real photos, steady reviews with replies, consistent name, address and phone details across directories, and location pages on your site that say something specific. Read how we approach local search and map rankings and the ongoing Google Business Profile management that keeps a listing current.
Google Ads and Local Services Ads
Paid search puts you at the top of the page today, on the exact terms you choose, for as long as you pay. Done well, it means tight keyword lists, negative keywords that block the wrong searches, ads written to the intent behind each query, landing pages that match the ad, and conversion tracking that counts calls and forms instead of clicks. For many service trades, Local Services Ads add a pay per lead option above the regular ads. See our Google Ads management service for how campaigns are structured and reported. The ad spend is paid to Google and shown separately from our management fee.
AI search visibility
A growing share of questions are now answered by AI summaries and chat assistants before anyone clicks. Those answers draw on pages that are clear, well structured, consistent about who you are and what you do, and mentioned by other credible sites. The same habits that serve classic SEO serve AI answers: plain explanations, accurate business details everywhere, and pages that actually answer the question asked.
Social, email and content
Social media management
Organic social keeps a business visible to people who already know it and gives new buyers proof that it is active and real. The work is a content calendar that reflects your actual services and seasons, posts and short videos made for each platform, replies to comments and messages, and monthly notes on what drew attention. Instagram and Facebook suit consumer brands, TikTok reaches younger buyers, and LinkedIn is where most B2B attention lives. Our social media management service covers the publishing and community side.
Social media advertising
Paid social works differently from search. Nobody is asking for you; you are interrupting a scroll, so the creative and the offer carry the campaign. Audiences are built from interests, job titles, website visitors and customer lists, and results come from testing several ads and keeping the winners. Read about paid social campaigns if you want to reach people before they start searching.
Email marketing
Email is the channel you own. A list of past customers and interested prospects is worth more every year you look after it: welcome sequences for new subscribers, reminders for repeat services, newsletters that teach something, and win back messages for people who have gone quiet. In Canada every commercial email needs consent, clear sender identification and a working unsubscribe. See our email marketing service for how lists are built and kept clean.
Content writing
Every other channel runs on words: service pages, blog articles, ad copy, email sequences, case explanations, FAQs. Good content answers the questions buyers ask in the order they ask them, in plain Canadian English, and gives search engines and AI assistants something worth quoting. Our content writing team works in English and French.
Websites, CRM, automation and AI
Every channel above sends people somewhere, and that somewhere decides whether the money turns into enquiries. This is why the website, the CRM and the follow up are part of digital marketing, not a separate project.
Web design and development
A marketing website loads quickly on a phone, says what you do and where in the first screen, makes calling or booking one tap away, and has a dedicated page for each service and area you want to be found for. It is also built to WCAG so it works for people using screen readers or keyboards. Look at how we design websites and, for builds on WordPress, Shopify, Webflow or a custom ecommerce stack, at our web development hub. Sites also need a home and care after launch, which is the job of managed website hosting and website maintenance and security.
CRM and automation
Most lost revenue is not lost at the ad; it is lost after the enquiry, when nobody calls back, the quote goes unanswered or the lead sits in an inbox. A CRM collects every enquiry in one place, assigns it, reminds your team to follow up and shows which source each sale came from. CS+ is our CRM, and the CRM and automation service page explains how pipelines, reminders, text and email follow up are set up around the way your team already sells. If you are comparing a Marketing Automation Agency with a general agency, this is the piece to ask about first.
AI agents and automation
AI is now practical for small and mid sized firms in a few clear places: answering calls and chats after hours, booking appointments into a calendar, qualifying leads with a few questions, and drafting follow up messages for a person to approve. It works best on the repetitive parts of the day, with a human handling anything sensitive. Our AI chat and voice agents page covers what these agents can and cannot do.
Lead generation
Some businesses want one outcome above all: qualified enquiries. Lead generation pulls the channels together around that number, with landing pages, offers, forms, call tracking and a CRM that scores and routes each lead. See our lead generation programs for how that is planned.
Brand, video, reputation and strategy
Branding and design
A recognizable name, logo, colour palette and tone of voice make every ad and post cheaper to run, because people remember you the second time they see you. Our brand identity work covers the core identity, and signs, print and media design carries it onto vehicles, storefronts, trade show booths and brochures so the offline and online experience match.
Video production and photography
Short video now carries social, ads, websites and Google Business Profile alike. Real photos of your team, space and work outperform stock images because buyers can tell the difference. See video production and photography for shoots planned around the channels where the footage will run.
Online reputation management
Reviews decide close calls. A reputation program asks happy customers for reviews at the right moment, replies to every review in a calm and useful way, watches for false or abusive reviews and reports them through the platform’s own process. It never writes fake reviews, which are deceptive under Canadian law. Read about reputation and review management.
Strategy and fractional CMO
Some firms do not need more hands; they need someone senior to set priorities, choose the channels, write the budget and hold the agencies and staff accountable. A fractional CMO does that part time. Our marketing strategy and fractional CMO service is where that starts.
The technology underneath
Marketing depends on systems that stay up and stay safe: email that lands, a site that is not hacked, staff devices that work. That is why we also offer cyber security, managed IT services and custom app development for firms that want one team across marketing and technology.
Full service, single channel, consultant or in-house
There are four common ways to staff your marketing, and each suits a different stage of business. Many firms end up mixing two of them.
Full service agency
A Full Service Marketing Agency plans and runs most channels under one roof: search, ads, social, email, content, website and CRM. The advantage is one plan, one report and one team accountable for the whole path from first click to closed sale, with no finger pointing between vendors. The trade off is that you rely on one firm for a lot, so ask to see who actually does each piece of work and insist the accounts sit in your name.
Single channel agency
Some agencies do one thing, such as paid search or SEO, and do it deeply. This works well when the rest of your marketing is already strong and one channel needs more depth. It works poorly when the real problem is elsewhere, for example great ads pointing at a slow website with no follow up. Someone still has to connect the pieces, and that someone is usually you.
Digital marketing consultant
A Digital Marketing Consultant gives advice, audits and a plan, and leaves the doing to you, your staff or other vendors. This suits a firm with capable people who need direction, or an owner who wants a second opinion before hiring. It does not suit a firm with no one available to carry out the plan.
In-house marketer
A hire on your payroll knows your business intimately and is there every day. One person, though, rarely covers search, ads, design, writing, video, analytics and CRM equally well, and the software licences add up. A common pattern for growing firms is an in-house coordinator who owns the calendar and the relationship with customers, supported by an agency for the specialized execution.
Which suits you
If no one at your firm owns marketing today, a full service agency or a fractional CMO usually comes first. If you have a marketer who needs depth in one channel, a single channel agency or consultant fits. If marketing is a core function with a team, an agency becomes a partner for overflow and expertise. Whichever you choose, the person who sets the strategy should see the whole funnel, not just one channel.
Inbound, performance and demand generation
You will hear agencies describe themselves with these three labels. They are not rival products; they are different time horizons, and most firms need some of each.
Inbound marketing
Inbound Marketing means being found when people go looking: SEO, useful content, a Google Business Profile, email newsletters and social posts that answer real questions. It costs time and money up front and pays off gradually, because each good page and each review keeps working for years. It suits any business whose buyers research before they buy, from accountants to renovators.
Performance marketing
A Performance Marketing Agency focuses on paid channels where every dollar can be traced to a lead or a sale: Google Ads, Local Services Ads, paid social and shopping campaigns. The strength is speed and control; you can turn spend up or down within a day. The weakness is that results stop when the budget stops, and costs rise as competitors bid on the same terms. Performance marketing is only as good as its tracking, so ask how calls and offline sales are counted.
Demand generation
Demand Generation is mostly a B2B idea. It aims to make the right companies aware of a problem and of you before they are ready to buy, through LinkedIn, webinars, guides, email nurture and account based ads aimed at named companies. It is measured over a sales cycle, not a week, by pipeline value and meetings booked rather than form fills alone.
How the three connect
Paid campaigns bring traffic and data quickly; that data shows which messages and searches convert, which then guides the content and SEO work. Inbound content gives the ads better landing pages and lowers their cost. Demand generation fills the top of the funnel that search will later catch. A sensible plan funds performance for immediate leads, inbound for lasting visibility, and demand generation when the sale is complex and the buyer is a business.
Small business and B2B marketing
Small business marketing
A small business usually has a tight budget, an owner who is also the salesperson, and customers within a short drive. Small Business Marketing therefore starts with the essentials: a complete Google Business Profile, a fast website with a page per service, reviews, a modest search ad campaign on high intent terms, and a simple CRM so no enquiry is forgotten. Local Marketing in this sense means the map pack, neighbourhood pages, community sponsorships and directories. Our page on search, ads and websites for small teams goes into this in detail.
B2B marketing
Selling to other businesses changes almost everything. There are several decision makers, the cycle runs longer, deals are larger, and buyers want proof of expertise before they talk to sales. LinkedIn, thought leadership content, case explanations, webinars, email nurture and a CRM pipeline that sales and marketing share matter more than Instagram. See our B2B marketing service for how we plan for long sales cycles.
Industry and city context
The same channel behaves differently by trade and by market. A dental clinic, a law firm and an ecommerce brand need different keywords, rules and offers. Browse the trades and sectors we plan for, including our hubs for salons, spas and wellness brands, veterinary clinics and pet businesses, event and entertainment companies and staffing agencies and professional firms. For local markets, see the cities we serve.
Measurement and reporting in plain words
Measurement is where many agency relationships go wrong, usually because nobody agreed at the start what counts as success. Here is what good measurement looks like, without the jargon.
Count what pays the bills
Clicks, impressions and followers are signs of activity, not outcomes. The numbers that matter are qualified calls, form enquiries, bookings, online sales and, for B2B, meetings and pipeline value. Every campaign should be set up to count these before it spends money, with call tracking that records which source produced a call and forms that pass their source into the CRM.
Attribution in plain words
Attribution means giving credit to the channels that led to a sale. Few buyers convert on the first visit: they may see a social ad, search your name a week later, read a review and then call. Tools that credit only the last click undervalue the ads and content that started the journey. A sensible report shows both the last touch and the first touch, and the owner and agency agree on which view guides budget.
Connect marketing to sales
The most useful number is cost per customer, not cost per lead. That only works when the CRM records which leads became paying customers and what they spent. When marketing and sales data live in one place, you can see that one campaign produces fewer leads but better customers, and fund it accordingly.
What a monthly report should show
- Spend by channel, with ad spend separate from fees.
- Leads, calls, bookings and sales by channel and campaign.
- Cost per lead and, where the CRM allows, cost per customer.
- Search rankings and map visibility for the terms that matter, plus organic traffic to key pages.
- What was done this month, what was learned and what changes next month.
If a report is long on charts and short on the last two items, ask for a plain summary.
Rules and privacy to plan for
Canadian marketing runs under rules that an agency should build in from day one. This is a marketing observation, not legal advice.
CASL for email and texts
Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation applies to commercial email and text messages. You need consent (express or, in limited cases, implied), clear identification of who is sending, contact details, and an unsubscribe that works and is honoured promptly. Keep a record of how and when each contact gave consent.
Privacy and data
PIPEDA sets out how private sector organizations collect, use and disclose personal information in the course of commercial activity, including consent and safeguards. Quebec’s Law 25 adds stricter consent and transparency duties for personal information of Quebec residents, and the Charter of the French Language affects marketing aimed at Quebec. Never put health or other sensitive details into analytics or ad targeting, and do not build audiences from them.
Advertising claims and reviews
The Competition Act prohibits false or misleading representations, including claims you cannot back up, prices that hide mandatory fees added later (drip pricing) and fake or incentivized reviews presented as genuine. When an influencer or partner is paid or given product, the connection should be disclosed clearly, as Ad Standards guidelines describe.
Accessibility
In Ontario, the AODA sets accessibility requirements for many organizations’ websites, and building to WCAG is the practical way to meet them. Accessible sites also tend to be faster and easier for everyone to use.
How we work
Our process is simple to describe, and each step produces something you can read and keep.
- A free review. We look at your website, Google Business Profile, ads, social and how enquiries are handled today, and talk about your goals, capacity and budget.
- A written plan and proposal. You receive the recommended channels, the order to do them in, what each includes and the fees, all quoted in writing. Ad spend and software licences are shown separately.
- Build. We set up tracking first, then the pages, campaigns, profiles and CRM pipeline in the agreed scope, at agreed milestones.
- Launch. Campaigns go live once tracking is confirmed, so the first leads are counted properly.
- Monthly reporting. Every month you get a plain report on spend, leads, sales where tracked, work completed and next steps.
All advertising, analytics, Google Business Profile and domain accounts are created or kept in your name, with us added as managers. Our team works in English and French. You can learn more about the team at Canada Create™.
What drives the cost
The honest answer to what a digital marketing agency costs is that it depends on scope, and anyone who quotes a fixed figure before understanding your business is guessing. Our public price is SEO from CAD 1,500/month; everything else is quoted in writing after the free review. Here is what moves the number.
The channels and how many
One channel costs less than five. A search ads campaign alone is a smaller job than search ads plus SEO, social, email and a CRM. Many firms start with two or three channels and add more as the first ones pay for themselves.
Competition and geography
Ranking for a competitive service across a large city takes more content and more authority work than ranking in a small town or a narrow niche. Several locations or provinces multiply the pages and listings to manage. Serving Quebec adds French content.
The starting point
A firm with a fast site, good reviews and clean tracking needs less setup than one with an outdated site, a half finished Google Business Profile and no way to know where calls come from. Fixing foundations is a one time cost that makes every later dollar work harder.
Ad spend and production
Ad spend is paid to Google, Facebook, LinkedIn or the relevant platform and shown separately from our fees. Video shoots, photography and print are scoped as projects. Software licences are also paid to the vendor.
Reporting and meetings
Weekly calls, custom dashboards and reporting to several stakeholders take time and are priced accordingly. A clear monthly report is included in every ongoing scope.
How to choose a digital marketing agency
Choosing a digital marketing agency is easier when you ask the same questions of each one and compare the answers in writing. Here are the questions worth asking.
Questions to ask every agency
- Who owns the accounts? The answer should be you. Ads, analytics, Google Business Profile, domain and website logins belong in your name.
- Who will do the work? Ask which people handle strategy, ads, writing and design, and who is your day to day contact.
- What do you count as a result? Look for leads, calls, bookings and sales, not only traffic and impressions.
- How is ad spend handled? It should be paid to the platform and shown separately from management fees.
- What will I see every month? Ask for a sample report.
- How do you handle follow up? An agency that ignores the CRM and the call back is only doing half the job.
- How do you handle privacy and consent? They should mention CASL and privacy law without being prompted.
Warning signs
Be wary of anyone who promises first place on Google, quotes a price before asking about your business, keeps your ad account in their own name, or reports only vanity numbers. Fake reviews, bought followers and hidden fees are red flags under Canadian law as well as bad practice. An agency that will not explain what it does each month is asking for trust it has not earned.
What to look for
Look for a team that asks about your capacity, your sales process and your customers before talking channels; that writes its plan and fees down; that can explain each channel in plain words; and that has a real office you can visit. BBB accreditation and a record of resolved or absent complaints are reasonable checks. Canada Create™ is a BBB Accredited Business with an A+ rating and zero complaints.

Digital marketing agency questions
What exactly does a digital marketing agency do?
It plans, runs and measures the online channels that bring you customers: search engine optimization, Google Business Profile, Google Ads, social media, email, content and the website those channels point to. A good agency also connects enquiries to a CRM so follow up happens, and reports every month on the leads, calls and sales each channel produced, with spend shown separately from fees.
How much does it cost to hire a digital marketing agency?
It depends on the channels, the competition in your market, how many locations you serve and the state of your website and tracking today. At Canada Create™, SEO starts from CAD 1,500/month and every other service is quoted in writing after a free review. Ad spend and software licences are paid to the platform and listed separately from our fees.
How much does digital marketing cost in Canada?
There is no single figure because scope varies widely. The main drivers are how many channels you run, how competitive your service and city are, whether you serve Quebec in French, how much setup your site and tracking need, and your ad budget. Ask any agency for a written proposal that separates its fees from ad spend so you can compare quotes fairly.
Is it worth it to hire a marketing agency?
It is worth it when the agency brings skills you do not have in house, tracks enquiries back to spending, and fixes follow up as well as traffic. It is not worth it when nobody can tell you which leads came from which campaign. Ask for a sample monthly report and check that it shows leads and sales, not just clicks and impressions.
How do I choose a digital marketing agency?
Ask each agency the same questions and compare the written answers. Who owns the accounts? Who does the work? What counts as a result? How is ad spend shown? What does the monthly report contain? How do they handle CASL and privacy? Be wary of anyone who promises first place on Google or quotes a price before learning about your business.
What is the difference between a full service marketing agency and a single channel agency?
A full service agency plans and runs most channels under one plan and one report, so one team is accountable from first click to closed sale. A single channel agency goes deep on one thing, such as paid search. That works when the rest of your marketing is strong, but someone still has to connect the channels, the website and the follow up.
What is inbound marketing and how is it different from performance marketing?
Inbound marketing means being found when people look for you, through SEO, useful content, reviews and email. It builds gradually and keeps working. Performance marketing means paid campaigns, such as Google Ads and paid social, where each dollar is traced to a lead or sale. It is fast and controllable but stops when the budget stops. Most firms need some of both.
Should a small business hire an agency, a consultant or an in-house marketer?
If nobody owns marketing today, an agency or a fractional CMO usually comes first because one hire rarely covers ads, SEO, design, writing and analytics well. A consultant suits a firm with capable staff who need direction. An in-house coordinator supported by an agency is a common pattern once the business grows and marketing becomes a daily job.
What should a digital marketing agency report every month?
Spend by channel with ad spend separate from fees; leads, calls, bookings and sales by channel and campaign; cost per lead and, where the CRM allows, cost per customer; rankings and map visibility for the terms that matter; and a plain summary of what was done, what was learned and what changes next month.
Who owns the accounts?
You should. Your Google Ads, analytics, Google Business Profile, social pages, domain and website logins belong in your business name, with the agency added as a manager. That way your data, history and reviews stay with you whatever happens. We set accounts up this way for every client and recommend you ask any agency the same question.
How does AI change what a digital marketing agency does?
AI now answers many questions before anyone clicks, so clear pages, accurate business details everywhere and genuine mentions on other sites matter more. Inside the business, AI chat and voice agents can answer after hours, book appointments and draft follow up for a person to approve. The strategy, judgement and accountability still belong to people.

Not sure which channel comes first?
Most firms do not need every channel at once; they need the right two or three, connected to a follow up that works. Ask for a free review and we will tell you where we would start and why.
