Do you want to learn how to create a WordPress popup based on location? Here's how to create a location-based geotargeting popup in WordPress, step by step.

Many business owners struggle to engage their global audience effectively. Using the same marketing message for all users may not resonate with individuals from different countries. This is where location-based popups come into play.

Implementing location-based popups in WordPress allows you to present tailored marketing messages to the right audience at the right moment. This approach enhances user experience and boosts revenue for your WordPress site.

At CanadaCreate, we have conducted numerous popup campaigns targeting users from various regions worldwide. We discovered that the easiest method to create geolocation popups is by utilizing OptinMonster. We also rely on this plugin for managing diverse campaigns across our other brand websites.

In this tutorial, we will guide you through the process of creating popups based on user location and integrating them into your WordPress site.

What Are Location-Based Popups?

Location-based popups function similarly to standard popups, but they are specifically designed to appear only for visitors from designated locations.

For instance, visitors from the United States will see different popups compared to those from the United Kingdom or Spain.

You can refine your location targeting even more by focusing on specific states and cities. This means that visitors in Florida can receive a different popup than those in California.

This technique is called geotargeting, allowing you to prompt specific actions from your visitors based on their geographic location.

Benefits of Implementing Location-Based Popups in WordPress

Incorporating location-based popups in WordPress provides a tailored experience for your visitors, demonstrating your understanding of their needs and potentially increasing conversion rates.

This level of customization can assist you in achieving your website objectives, such as expanding your email subscriber list or increasing online revenue.

Geolocation popups can enhance your business website in several ways, including:

  • Enhancing website credibility by acknowledging your visitors’ locations.
  • Offering eCommerce discounts and promotions targeted at visitors from specific regions.
  • Advertising local events and conferences to your audience.
  • Showcasing products that are pertinent to visitors from various locations.

Steps to Create a Location-Based Popup in WordPress

The simplest method to integrate popups into your WordPress site is by utilizing a plugin.

We recommend OptinMonster, the leading WordPress popup plugin available, which helps you capture leads, expand your email list, and enhance conversion rates.

Utilize the OptinMonster drag-and-drop editor to effortlessly create a popup campaign in just a few minutes. You can also customize your popups based on the page visitors are on, their actions on your site, and more.

For additional details, check out our comprehensive review of OptinMonster.

Start by visiting the OptinMonster website and registering for an account. Make sure to select the Growth plan, as it includes Geolocation targeting features.

Next, install and activate the plugin. For guidance, refer to our tutorial on how to install a plugin in WordPress.

The OptinMonster plugin serves as a bridge between your WordPress site and the OptinMonster software.

Once the plugin is activated, you will be greeted by the OptinMonster setup wizard. Click the ‘Connect Your Existing Account’ button, or create a new free account if you haven’t registered yet.

After completing the setup wizard, your WordPress website will be successfully connected to OptinMonster.

To set up your location-based popup, go to OptinMonster » Campaigns.

Then, click ‘Add New’ to start creating a new popup campaign.

OptinMonster will present you with various campaign types to select from.

Select the ‘Popup’ campaign type to get started.

Next, choose a campaign template. This template will serve as the basis for your popup’s design, so pick one that aligns with your desired aesthetic.

For this tutorial, we will select the Checkout template. When you find a template you like, hover over it and click ‘Use Template’ to proceed.

Now, give your campaign a name.

This name will not be visible in your design; it is simply for your reference to identify the type of campaign you created.

Next, click ‘Start Building’ to continue.

You will be directed to the OptinMonster app, where you can personalize your popup’s appearance.

You have complete control over your popup’s customization. Add new blocks, text, headings, and more by clicking on the element you wish to modify, and the options menu will appear on the left.

Once you are happy with the design of your location-based popup, click ‘Save’ and then select the ‘Display Rules’ tab at the top of the screen.

Here, you will configure the location triggers for your popup.

By default, your popup will be displayed on any page after a visitor has been on the site for 5 seconds.

To customize the first rule according to the visitor’s physical location, click on the ‘time on page’ display rule and then choose ‘Physical Location.’

You can now configure the popup to appear for visitors located in a specific area.

You also have the option to include or exclude visitors from EU countries.

We will set the rule so that the popup displays when a visitor is in Las Vegas, NV.

Next, click the ‘Validate’ button.

A popup will appear showing available locations based on your input. Simply select your desired location and click ‘Next Step.’

OptinMonster also provides options to add an animation effect or sound on the next screen, but we will keep the default settings for now.

After that, click ‘Next Step’ again to access the summary page, where you can review your location-based popup settings.

If everything looks correct, go to the ‘Publish’ tab and change the ‘Publish Status’ from Draft to Publish.

Next, click ‘Save’ and exit the screen.

Your location-based popup is now live on your website.

To create multiple location-based popups, simply follow the process outlined above and adjust the ‘Display’ rules to match the new user location.

OptinMonster allows you to run several popup campaigns simultaneously, delivering a tailored experience for each visitor.
