Mastering WordPress: Set Post Creation Limits for Users in Just a Few Easy Steps!

how-to-add-a-post-creation-limit-in-wordpress

Want to limit how many posts a user can publish on your WordPress site? Follow this step-by-step guide on how to add a post creation limit for WordPress users.

After years of managing a multi-author blog, we’ve encountered the challenge of having an abundance of content ready for publication. While a consistent flow of posts is beneficial, it can sometimes overwhelm our editorial process and hinder our ability to maintain high-quality standards.

For certain blogs, it may be beneficial to impose limits on the number of posts each author can submit daily or weekly. This strategy can help regulate your site’s content flow and enhance your editorial workflow, particularly if you have numerous contributors.

In this article, we will guide you through the process of setting post creation limits for users on your WordPress site.

Who Should Consider Limiting Post Creation in WordPress?

If you oversee a multi-author blog, you might want to restrict the number of posts each author can submit on a daily, weekly, or even monthly basis. This approach can assist in managing your site’s content and streamline the editorial process.

You may also want to implement post creation limits on a WordPress membership site. If members are allowed to submit content, establishing a limit can help reduce spam and enhance the overall user experience.

Likewise, if you operate a listing directory, such as a real estate website, setting a post limit can prevent any single business from overwhelming your directory with excessive content.

Let’s explore how to set post creation limits for WordPress users.

How to Set Posting Limits for Users in WordPress

The simplest way to restrict users from posting too frequently is by using the User Post Limit plugin. This free WordPress plugin enables you to establish post creation limits for various user roles, including authors, contributors, subscribers, and more.

First, you need to install and activate the User Post Limit plugin on your website. For detailed instructions, refer to our guide on installing a WordPress plugin.

Once activated, navigate to Settings » User Posts Limit in your WordPress dashboard. Here, you will find options to configure post limits for different user roles.

By default, the plugin displays a ‘Posts limit exceeded’ message when a user reaches their posting limit. You can customize this message by entering your desired text in the ‘Text’ field.

There are additional advanced options available, but the default settings are sufficient for most WordPress blogs.

Next, open the ‘Role’ dropdown menu and select the user role for which you want to set a posting limit. This could be Contributor, Author, Editor, etc.

The available options may differ based on the user roles and permissions you have configured on your WordPress site. For instance, if you have WooCommerce installed, you might see a ‘Shop Manager’ role.

Once you have selected the user role, proceed to choose the type of content you wish to restrict by using the ‘Type’ dropdown menu.

You will find various options available, including posts, pages, media, navigation menus, custom CSS, custom post types, and more.

Next, open the ‘Cycle’ dropdown and select the desired timescale for your rule, such as days, years, months, or weeks.

After that, enter a number in the ‘Limit’ field. For example, in the image provided, we are restricting users with the Author role to a maximum of 5 posts per day.

Once you are satisfied with the rule configuration, click on ‘Save Changes’ to apply your settings.

You may want to establish different post limits for various user roles. For example, you could set a limit for guest bloggers and a higher limit for editors.

To do this, simply adjust the number next to ‘Rules’ to 2 or more.

Then, click on ‘Save Changes’ to finalize your adjustments.

The plugin will now generate additional rules for you to customize as needed.

When you have completed your changes, remember to click on ‘Save Changes’ to ensure everything is saved.

When a user attempts to create a new post and exceeds the established limit, they will receive a notification.
