1. What Queries Are Users Making?

With internet users conducting 5.9 million Google searches every minute, wouldn’t it be beneficial to understand what they seek so you can provide valuable answers? This is the essence of keyword research.

Keywords are the specific terms and phrases that users enter into Google and other search engines to locate the information they need.

You can identify the most relevant keywords for your blog’s niche by utilizing both free and paid keyword research tools. In this article, I will discuss how to effectively use several of these tools.

Let’s begin with LowFruits. This is one of my preferred keyword research tools because it simplifies the process of finding keywords relevant to your WordPress blog.

All you need to do is input any word or phrase related to your business, and LowFruits will provide you with a list of keyword variations, questions, and associated keywords.

These insights will help you identify topics to write about. Be sure to integrate these keywords naturally within the content of your blog posts.

Additionally, LowFruits identifies vulnerabilities in search engine results pages (SERPs), highlighting low domain authority websites that rank for your target keyword. The more weaknesses identified, the simpler it becomes to rank for your selected keyword.

Alternative option: The CanadaCreate Keyword Generator is another excellent and free resource.

Another valuable tool is Google Trends, which illustrates how the popularity of a keyword fluctuates over time. This can indicate whether a specific keyword is gaining or losing traction, or if it experiences higher search volumes during particular seasons.

This will assist you in identifying topics that are rapidly gaining relevance and those best suited for writing at specific times of the year.

For instance, you may want to plan some topics for summer or winter, or around specific holidays such as Christmas or Thanksgiving.

2. What Search Terms Are Driving Traffic to My Website?

Now that you have a valuable list of relevant keywords that users commonly search for, take some time to explore the phrases people are currently using to discover your WordPress site. This will provide you with a list of search terms for which you are already ranking.

Google Search Console is an invaluable tool for discovering your website’s performance in Google search results. This free resource allows you to track your site’s visibility effectively.

Despite its benefits, Google Search Console can be quite complex and overwhelming for those new to online tools.

MonsterInsights aims to simplify this process. By integrating with Google Search Console and Google Analytics, it provides user-friendly reports directly within your WordPress dashboard.

For instance, MonsterInsights includes a Search Console report that highlights the top 50 search terms from Google that drive traffic to your website.

This information reveals the interests of your current audience. Since you are already attracting visitors through these keywords, you can enhance your search visibility by developing new content around these topics.

Next, evaluate whether your WordPress blog posts are targeting the appropriate keywords. If your existing content isn’t generating significant traffic for specific keywords, focus on improving the quality of your content.

3. Understanding My Website Visitors

I always recommend that business owners tailor their content strategy to their target audience, which consists of the individuals you aim to engage with your products and services.

Understanding the demographics, needs, and interests of your audience will enable you to create more engaging content.

Google Analytics is the best tool for gaining insights into your website visitors. This free tool gathers a wealth of information, including their location, operating system, browser, and screen resolution.

You can access this data directly from your WordPress dashboard through the MonsterInsights Demographics report, which presents visitor information from Google Analytics in an easy-to-understand format.

At a glance, you can see the ages and genders of your visitors, which will assist you in crafting more appealing content.

For instance, you may want to adopt a different writing style and tone for a younger female audience compared to a site that primarily attracts middle-aged men.

This report also highlights your visitors’ interests, showcasing the topics that resonate most with your target audience, which is invaluable for content planning.

For further insights, check out this article on tracking website visitors in WordPress.

You might find the demographic data surprising if you’re aiming for a different audience. This indicates a potential issue with your content strategy. Keep these insights in mind when developing new content and making updates.

4. How Can I Identify What’s Working on My Site?

A crucial aspect of building an effective content plan is analyzing the existing content on your website that is performing well. Focus on the posts that attract the most traffic and engage your visitors for extended periods.

For instance, it’s wise to identify your key pages and posts.

Once you determine which posts are most successful, you can create additional content on similar subjects to increase your traffic.

I also suggest monitoring keyword rankings for your top-performing articles. You might enhance their rankings by scheduling regular updates and optimizations.

You can gain deeper insights by using the MonsterInsights Custom Dimensions addon. This tool allows you to generate reports on your most popular authors, leading categories, main focus keywords, and the types of posts that resonate most with your audience.

This information will empower you to develop a data-driven content strategy that effectively meets your goals.

For instance, if one author’s articles are gaining traction, you can coach your team to adopt their successful strategies. Additionally, identifying your top-performing categories will reveal trending topics on your site, guiding you to create more relevant content.

5. How to Identify Declining Traffic on My Website?

Content planning involves not only creating new articles but also consistently refreshing existing content to maintain its relevance and accuracy.

Content decay refers to the gradual decline in traffic and search rankings of your posts over time. Without updates, these posts will continue to lose visibility.

This decline can occur when your content becomes outdated, or when competitors produce superior content targeting the same keywords. It may also result from a decrease in search interest for those keywords or changes in Google’s algorithm.

In my view, content decay is one of the most significant challenges faced by website owners and online businesses.

Therefore, it’s wise to track the performance of individual posts using a WordPress SEO plugin. All in One SEO (AIOSEO) is among the top choices, making it easy to optimize your website for search engines.

The Content Performance report provides insights into your top-performing posts and pages, indicating whether their search engine rankings are improving or declining.

The ‘Top Losing’ tab allows you to quickly identify which posts have experienced the most significant drops in rankings.

AIOSEO features a comprehensive Content Rankings report that shows the last update date for all your website content, the ranking changes, and a visual graph illustrating the performance of each post over the past year.

After pinpointing the posts on your site that are losing traction, you can schedule updates to help them regain their ranking positions.

Make sure to refresh any outdated information in the post and optimize it for SEO. This could involve updating images, embedding a video, or adding a table of contents or FAQ section.

6. What Content Is Missing From My Site?

Your WordPress blog is continuously evolving, which means there are numerous topics that users are searching for that you haven’t yet addressed.

One of the most effective strategies for planning new content is to conduct a content gap analysis. This involves comparing the keywords your audience is searching for with your existing website content and planning new posts to address the uncovered topics.

Earlier, I demonstrated how Semrush can assist you in identifying essential keywords to include in your articles.

It also provides a Keyword Gap report that automatically highlights missing or underperforming keywords on your website.

By entering the URLs of your top competitors, you can uncover the keywords they rank for that you may not be targeting.

You can easily filter this list to identify keywords that are absent or underperforming on your blog.

After pinpointing the missing topics, you can strategize to create valuable content that addresses these gaps and enhances your website’s search visibility.

Now, I want to share additional methods for generating content ideas by analyzing your competitors.

7. What Are My Competitors Excelling At?

Having worked in the content marketing field for many years, I can confirm that the competition is fiercer than ever. Staying ahead requires monitoring the strategies of others in your industry.

It’s likely that some of your competitors’ content is achieving better results than yours. Conducting a competitor analysis allows you to learn from their successes, enabling you to enhance your own website and ultimately surpass them in search rankings.

The Semrush Keyword Gap report reveals the keywords where your competitors outperform you. Additionally, the Domain Overview report provides a comprehensive analysis of competing websites.

By entering your competitor’s URL, you can access valuable insights such as their authority score, organic and paid search traffic, backlinks, and much more.

You’ll also discover which countries generate the most traffic and view a timeline graph of their traffic trends.

Moreover, you can identify their top-performing pages and gather a wealth of other valuable data to enhance your content strategy.

I value how Semrush allows you to delve into each section of the report, offering fresh insights into your competitors’ SEO tactics.

You can leverage this information to set objectives for your website and pinpoint areas that need improvement.

8. Utilize AI Tools for Generating Additional Content Ideas

Marketers leveraging AI (artificial intelligence) experience an average ROI (return on investment) boost of 70%. When generating new content ideas, AI tools can assist by pinpointing relevant trends, topics, and keywords.

This can inspire new content concepts and keep you informed about ongoing discussions in your industry.

Simply enter the right prompt into ChatGPT to get started.

With practice, you’ll learn to craft longer and more specific prompts that yield the precise assistance you need. Here are some examples to help you develop your content plan.

This prompt requests 10 blog post ideas on specific subjects, along with a suggested title for each post:

Generate a list of at least 10 blog post ideas focused on stress management and mental health. Include an SEO-friendly title for each post, using an emotional and persuasive tone in the titles.

Here are the ideas that ChatGPT provided in response:

If you’re planning to write product reviews, you can ask the AI for a list of the most popular products in a specific category, along with a brief description of their benefits, like this:

Compile a list of the most popular equipment essential for a home office, detailing the pros and cons of each item.

Similarly, you can request a list of common challenges people face when trying to complete a specific task:

Create a list of common issues encountered during a content gap analysis. Offer three tips for overcoming each challenge.

Asking specific questions will yield a more useful list of suggestions compared to vague prompts.

Once you have a list of new content ideas, artificial intelligence can assist you in crafting compelling headlines for each post. I suggest starting with a free headline analyzer tool available on sites like CanadaCreate and MonsterInsights.

Next, you can utilize tools like All in One SEO to enhance your headlines. With just a click, you’ll receive five optimized post titles designed to engage your audience based on the latest best practices.

9. Organize Your Content Plan Using a Content Calendar

If you’ve implemented all my suggestions, you should now have an extensive list of ideas. This will include new blog post topics, optimized titles and keywords, as well as articles that require updates.

It’s time to create a plan. However, a long list of keywords can be daunting for beginners, often leading to frustration and inaction.

You can ensure those posts are actually written or updated by scheduling them on your content calendar. This will serve as a roadmap, providing a clear overview of your content strategy and helping you stay on track.

Utilize popular online task management tools such as Asana or Trello. These web applications are well-known for their robust features that help you stay organized and focused.

For multi-author blogs, consider using tools like PublishPress Pro to enhance your editorial process. This WordPress plugin allows you to create a comprehensive content calendar with custom post statuses, editorial comments, and email alerts.

Ensure that your publishing schedule is both consistent and realistic. The aim is to develop a clear overview of your content strategy that keeps you organized and productive.
