4 Compelling Reasons WPBeginner Chose Drip Over MailChimp

At the end of 2023, we transitioned our email marketing platform from Mailchimp to Drip. Many of our newsletter subscribers have requested that we explain our decision to make this change.

Selecting the right email marketing service that aligns with your specific needs is crucial for effective email marketing.

While Mailchimp served us well during our early days as a small team, it no longer met our requirements as we expanded into a larger organization.

In this article, we will outline four key reasons for our switch from Mailchimp to Drip, highlighting how this service enables us to send more personalized emails, automate our marketing efforts, and much more.

Important Note: This article is part of our CanadaCreate Insider series, where we showcase the tools and products we utilize at CanadaCreate.

Background

In our initial stages, Mailchimp was the ideal choice for our email marketing needs. Over time, we have evolved from being the largest free WordPress resource with a small team of 3-4 members to a software company with over 300 employees.

As we expanded, we required an email marketing service that is user-friendly and equipped with essential automation tools to meet our increasing demands.

In contrast, many of our sister brands, such as WPForms, OptinMonster, and AIOSEO, were already utilizing Drip, which provides advanced email automation capabilities that surpass those of Mailchimp.

After thorough evaluation, we ultimately chose to transition our CanadaCreate email list from Mailchimp to Drip.

4 Compelling Reasons for Our Transition from Mailchimp to Drip

Whether you operate a blog, an e-commerce site, or any type of business, selecting the right email marketing platform is crucial for achieving success.

Our primary requirements for email marketing software include robust customer segmentation and personalized settings.

With that in mind, let’s explore the specific reasons behind our decision to switch from Mailchimp to Drip.

1. Enhanced Segmentation Features

Mailchimp is among the leading email marketing platforms. However, as our email list expanded, we discovered several limitations that hindered our growth.

One significant limitation is Mailchimp’s basic segmentation capabilities.

Email segmentation involves dividing a subscriber list into smaller, targeted groups to deliver the most relevant content to each group.

It’s generally more effective to create email lists based on demographic and behavioral data, such as the content users have engaged with, the opt-in forms they used to subscribe, and their previous purchases.

Instead of sending the same content to everyone, you can deliver highly personalized emails to targeted groups.

With email segmentation, you can:

  • Enhance open and click-through rates.
  • Achieve improved conversion rates and a better return on investment (ROI).
  • Increase revenue (In fact, 77% of ROI is generated from segmented, targeted, and triggered campaigns).
  • Experience fewer unsubscribes.
  • Enhance email deliverability.

In Mailchimp, you cannot segment your list based on user engagement, such as whether they opened an email or clicked a link that directs to a specific page.

User engagement with your content acts as a strong indicator of the types of content, products, or services they are interested in purchasing.

Mailchimp does track opens and clicks, but this data is only available in the reporting dashboard and cannot be utilized for automatic segmentation.

At CanadaCreate, this limitation meant we couldn’t accurately identify the types of emails you preferred and send you more valuable content.

In contrast, Drip enables us to segment our email list using an if-then logic.

For example, if a subscriber clicks on a particular link in an email, we can tag them as interested in that subject.

Additionally, it allows us to manually segment subscribers when necessary, providing us with the flexibility to deliver the right messages to the right audience.

This is a significant reason we chose to switch to an alternative to Mailchimp.

2. Enhanced Personalization

Email personalization is a technique that tailors email content to the specific behaviors, interests, and preferences of each recipient.

It goes far beyond just including their name in the email body or subject line.

When executed effectively, it should directly address the individual’s desires and needs. Consequently, they are more likely to open your email, engage with it, and potentially make a purchase if you’re selling a product.

We found the personalization features offered by Mailchimp to be restrictive.

While they do provide merge tags, allowing you to dynamically insert subscriber data into email content, these options are limited.

In contrast, Drip offers extensive capabilities with their Liquid tags. For example, you can customize emails based on subscriber tags, their actions, the timing of the automated emails, and more.

3. Superior Email Automation Features

Email automation involves setting up specific rules that trigger email communications based on the actions or inactions of your subscribers.

As a marketer, your goal is to guide your audience from one stage to another. For instance, you may aim to build trust with a newsletter subscriber to encourage them to make a purchase.

Drip enables you to automate your email marketing strategies through a feature known as workflows. With workflows, you can visually plan and schedule your email marketing campaigns.

As illustrated in the screenshot above, when this workflow is activated, a new subscriber will receive an email two minutes after signing up, but only if they have not made a purchase beforehand.

With Drip workflows, if you can envision an idea, you can create an email campaign tailored to your preferences.

We integrate workflows with our email series to deliver customized email campaigns to targeted audiences.

4. Clean and Intuitive User Interface

A user-friendly and intuitive interface is crucial for enhancing the experience of those new to email marketing platforms.

Mailchimp’s interface feels outdated and cluttered, making it challenging to navigate and find the desired options.

In contrast, Drip offers a sleek and modern interface, enabling users to access key features with ease.

Drip is designed for everyone, not just email marketing experts, thanks to its user-friendly templates and drag-and-drop functionality.

Conclusion – Review of Drip

Drip effectively meets our email marketing requirements, especially as our subscriber list has expanded significantly over the years. With tagging, you can create highly targeted segments, and the workflow feature allows for visual planning and execution of email campaigns.

We highly recommend Drip for businesses aiming to expand their email lists, particularly online retailers, as it integrates seamlessly with major eCommerce platforms and provides revenue tracking capabilities.

However, we recognize that Drip may not be suitable for everyone. It could be too complex for businesses with smaller email lists or those just starting their newsletters. In such cases, Constant Contact may be a better alternative.

We recommend Constant Contact because they provide all the necessary features to kickstart your email marketing at a budget-friendly price.
