Do you want to see old versions of any WordPress site? Here's a step by step guide on how to look up older versions of any website on the internet.

Accessing an archived version of a WordPress site can be both enjoyable and a source of creative inspiration, allowing you to explore content and media that are no longer accessible online.

At CanadaCreate and other brands, we’ve undergone several website redesigns over the years. When we need to compare past designs or locate an old piece of content, we refer to the archived versions.

To view a previous version of a site, you’ll need to utilize a third-party tool. Fortunately, we’ve tested various options, and based on our findings, the top tools are Wayback Machine and Oldweb.today.

In this article, we will guide you on how to easily access older versions of any WordPress website.

Why Access Archived Versions of WordPress Sites?

The internet evolves rapidly. Beyond reminiscing, there are numerous practical reasons to view an earlier version of a WordPress website.

Website elements frequently change over time. Sites undergo redesigns, content may be removed, and sometimes entire websites may become unavailable.

Being able to access an older version of a website can be incredibly beneficial in various scenarios, such as:

  • Retrieving outdated content from a website.
  • Recreating a resource that is no longer available online.
  • Capture screenshots before and after redesigning your website.
  • Seek design inspiration from previous versions of websites.

Now, let’s explore how to access older versions of any website.

Accessing Old Versions of Any Website: 3 Essential Tools

Several online tools create archives of websites by taking snapshots at various times and storing those pages.

These tools function similarly to your WordPress backups, but they are available for everyone on the internet.

Typically, these tools archive websites based on their popularity and traffic. Some sites may have thousands of archived versions, while others may be hard to locate.

Here are three effective tools you can use to discover old versions of any website online.

1. Wayback Machine

The Wayback Machine, part of The Internet Archive, is a vast digital library containing over 860 billion archived web pages.

The Wayback Machine allows you to view screenshots of websites from different points in history.

To use this tool, simply visit the Wayback Machine website, input the URL of the website you wish to explore, and click the ‘Browse History’ button.

It will display a graph showing the various dates when copies of the website were created.

You can click the top bar to organize the data by different years.

Below that, you will find a detailed month-by-month calendar view.

Next, select a specific day, and a popup will appear allowing you to choose the time.

Click on your desired time, and it will retrieve a cached version of the website. You can right-click to open the site in a new tab.

Once the page is loaded, you can interact with it as you normally would.

You can browse from page to page, view images, click on links, and more.

Please note that not all links may function, and you might not be able to access every page since some may not be cached.

This is often a challenge for very large sites that contain thousands of pages and blog posts.

2. Oldweb.today

Oldweb.today is a distinctive tool that allows you to explore older versions of websites using vintage web browsers from that era.

This provides an experience reminiscent of using certain websites in the past.

This tool retrieves website copies from third-party archives such as the Internet Archive and national digital libraries worldwide.

Please note that this tool may take some time to load older websites as it simulates classic browsers like Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, requiring it to locate and retrieve those sites first.

To utilize this tool, visit the Oldweb.today website, select a browser from the dropdown menu, and input the URL of the desired website.

Ensure that the ‘Browse Archives At’ option is selected and enter the specific date you wish to view.

After pressing Enter, the tool will begin generating results automatically.

Once it has finished loading, you will be able to explore and navigate the WordPress blog as if it were preserved in that moment in time.

You can click through links, explore different pages, and even copy the text.

3. Library of Congress Web Archive

The Library of Congress offers an extensive digital collection that includes newspapers, books, audio recordings, and websites.

They also provide a website archive search tool that functions similarly to the Wayback Machine mentioned earlier, though the results may differ from the other tools.

If you haven’t been able to locate an old version of a website before, this tool is worth trying.

To access this tool, go to the Library of Congress Web Archives, enter the URL of the website you want to find, and click the search icon.

You can select the type of search you wish to conduct. By default, the tool will utilize Web Archives, but you can click the dropdown menu to switch to options like audio recordings, newspapers, maps, and more.

The tool will display various web archives related to your website. Click on any of the results to proceed.

On the following screen, you will find visual captures of your website.

Simply click the ‘View Captures’ button to see the details.

The results page resembles the Wayback Machine interface.

First, select the year from the top menu.

Next, choose the date and click on the time for the available snapshot.

Typically, this tool provides only one time option to select from.

Clicking the date will display the archived version of the website.

You can also right-click to open the page in a new tab for easier access.

We hope one of the three tools mentioned above has assisted you in locating the old website you were searching for.
