Unlocking iDEAL Payments in WordPress: 2 Simple Methods to Get Started

If you are targeting customers in the Netherlands, integrating iDEAL at checkout is essential rather than optional. Our experience assisting clients in expanding to European markets showed that incorporating iDEAL significantly boosted conversion rates among Dutch shoppers.

This prompted us to explore various methods for integrating iDEAL with WordPress, ensuring a smooth user experience without introducing complications.

In this guide, we will present two effective methods for enabling iDEAL payments on your website.

Whether you are using WooCommerce or another platform, you can choose the solution that best meets your requirements, simplifying the checkout process for your Dutch customers.

The Importance of Accepting iDEAL Payments in WordPress

To successfully sell products or services in the Netherlands, it is crucial to accept iDEAL payments in WordPress. This payment method is the leading online payment system in the country, relied upon by millions for its ease of use and dependability.

Nearly every major Dutch bank endorses iDEAL, enabling customers to pay directly from their bank accounts without the need for a credit card, making it an essential option for any international e-commerce store.

iDEAL is a reliable payment solution that redirects customers to their bank’s secure platform to finalize transactions. This process protects sensitive banking information from being shared with third-party websites.

Additionally, iDEAL offers immediate payment confirmation, enabling you to process orders swiftly and provide a smooth checkout experience for your customers.

One of the significant advantages of using iDEAL is its cost-effectiveness. The transaction fees are generally lower than those of credit cards, helping your business reduce payment processing expenses.

Now, let’s explore how you can easily accept iDEAL payments in WordPress. This tutorial will guide you through two methods. You can click on the links below to jump to the method you prefer:

  • Method 1: Set Up an iDEAL Payments Form in WordPress
  • Method 2: Integrate iDEAL Payments with WooCommerce
  • Bonus: Integrate Affirm Payments in WordPress

Method 1: Set Up an iDEAL Payments Form in WordPress

If you’re looking to create an iDEAL payment form in WordPress, this method is ideal for you. It enables you to accept iDEAL payments for donations, memberships, services, or products without needing a complete online store.

To set this up, we recommend using WP Simple Pay, a tool we have thoroughly tested on our websites. It has become our preferred WordPress Stripe plugin because of its user-friendly builder, strong spam protection, and seamless integration with various payment methods.

What impressed us the most is its pre-designed template for iDEAL payments, which simplifies the setup process. For a comprehensive overview of its features, be sure to check out our complete WP Simple Pay review.

To get started, you first need to install and activate the WP Simple Pay plugin. For more information, refer to our beginner’s guide on installing a WordPress plugin.

Note:WP Simple Pay offers a free version, but you’ll need the Pro plan to access the iDEAL payment form template.

Once activated, a setup wizard will appear on your screen. Click the ‘Let’s Get Started’ button to proceed.

On the next page, you will need to enter your plugin’s license key.

You can find this information in your account on the WP Simple Pay website. After entering the key, click the ‘Activate and Continue’ button.

Next, you will need to connect your Stripe account with WP Simple Pay. Stripe is a widely used payment gateway that enables you to accept online payments.

Please be aware that the plugin requires a connection to a new or existing Stripe account to function properly.

To proceed, click the ‘Connect with Stripe’ button.

You can now log in to your Stripe account to establish the connection with the plugin.

For detailed guidance, refer to our tutorial on how to accept Stripe payments in WordPress.

After connecting your site to Stripe, the setup wizard will prompt you to configure your email settings.

You can choose to receive email notifications for payment receipts, upcoming invoices, and payment alerts. Additionally, provide the email address where you want these notifications sent.

Finally, click the ‘Save and Continue’ button. You can now proceed with the remaining steps and exit the setup wizard.

Next, navigate to the WP Simple Pay » Payment Forms section from the WordPress admin sidebar.

Once there, click the ‘Create Your Payment Form’ button.

This will take you to the ‘Select a template’ page, where you will find a variety of pre-designed payment form options.

Simply locate the ‘iDEAL Payment Form’ template and click the ‘Use Template’ button beneath it.

You will now be directed to the ‘Add New Payment Form’ page.

Begin by updating your form’s title and including a brief description. Then, select ‘On-site payment form’ as the type of form you want to create. You can also enable spam protection by checking the corresponding box.

Next, navigate to the ‘Payment’ tab in the left-hand menu. Here, you can set your desired tax collection rates under the ‘Tax Collection’ option.

After that, specify a price for the product or service you intend to sell through the form. If you are providing a subscription service, select the ‘Subscription’ option and click the ‘Add Price’ button to include various subscription tiers.

Remember to select Euro as the currency in this section; otherwise, the iDEAL payment form will not function properly.

Then, scroll down to the ‘Payment Methods’ section and select the ‘All’ option from the dropdown menu.

You will see that iDEAL is already selected from the list. Additionally, you can include other payment options like Klarna, AliPay, SEPA, CashApp, Bacs Direct Debit, and more.

Once completed, switch to the ‘Form Fields’ tab to add a form field from the dropdown menu. You can also expand this tab to customize each field’s settings and rearrange them using the drag-and-drop editor.

For instance, you can include an address field in your form if you’re selling physical products or offering in-person services. This allows customers to easily enter their address during the purchase or appointment booking process.

Next, navigate to the ‘Payment Page’ tab and check the box labeled ‘Enable a dedicated payment page.’ This feature enables you to create a custom payment page without the need to manually add a new page to your website.

WP Simple Pay allows you to personalize the form by adjusting the permalink, color scheme, images, footer text, and other settings.

Finally, click the ‘Publish’ button to save all your modifications.

You can now visit your WordPress site to see the iDEAL payment form in action and ready for use.

If you’d prefer to add the iDEAL form to an existing page, that’s also possible. After adding your form fields, simply click the ‘Publish’ button to save your changes.

Next, open the desired page or post from the WordPress dashboard and click the ‘Add Block’ (+) button. Use the search function to find the ‘WP Simple Pay’ block, then insert it into the page.

After that, select the iDEAL payment form from the dropdown menu within the block settings.

Finally, click the ‘Update’ or ‘Publish’ button to save your changes.

Now, visit your website to see your customized iDEAL payment form page.
