There are numerous avenues to begin your online photo sales, from stock photo platforms to your own e-commerce site. We particularly recommend Easy Digital Downloads (EDD) for its user-friendly features.
EDD is an ideal platform for selling digital products such as eBooks, PDFs, and photographs. We have personally used it to successfully sell plugins and have had an excellent experience.
In this guide, we will walk you through the process of selling your photos online using WordPress.
Reasons to Sell Your Photos Online
Stock photography websites are highly sought after by businesses, organizations, and individuals in need of high-quality images for various projects. If you’re looking to start an online side hustle, selling photos online is a lucrative option.
By offering your photos as downloadable files, you can earn income without incurring costs for shipping or professional printing. Additionally, you can sell the same file multiple times. All you need to do is set up your website, upload your files, and enjoy a stream of passive income with minimal daily effort.
As a professional photographer, selling your work online can help you reach a larger audience. This exposure may lead to potential clients booking you for photoshoots and events.

Step 1: Creating Your WordPress Website
Before you start building your WordPress website, it’s essential to understand the difference between two types of WordPress software: WordPress.org and WordPress.com.
For your online store, you should choose WordPress.org. Also referred to as self-hosted WordPress, it offers greater features and flexibility. You can install any WordPress plugin, including Easy Digital Downloads, which is specifically designed for selling products online.
For more information on this topic, please refer to our article discussing whether WordPress is suitable for eCommerce.
To begin selling digital photos with WordPress, you will need a domain name. This is the web address that customers will enter into their browser to access your store, such as shutterstock.com or stockphotos.com.
If you haven’t decided on a name yet, check out our guide on selecting the perfect domain name.
You’ll also require web hosting, which stores your website’s files online, and an SSL certificate to securely process credit card payments.
A domain name generally costs around $14.99 per year, while hosting services start at approximately $7.99 per month. The price for an SSL certificate varies based on the provider, typically ranging from $50 to $200 per year.
As you can see, these expenses can accumulate quickly, particularly for beginners.
Fortunately, SiteGround is currently offering an impressive 83% discount on their managed hosting for Easy Digital Downloads. This plan includes a free SSL certificate, Easy Digital Downloads pre-installed, and all the essential optimization features needed to create a successful business website.
This means you can begin selling your photos for less than $3 per month.
Now, let’s walk you through the simple process of purchasing a domain name, web hosting, and an SSL certificate.
To get started, visit the SiteGround website and click on ‘Get Plan.’
Next, SiteGround will prompt you to enter a domain name for your online store and will also present some optional add-ons you can choose to purchase. You can add these extras later, so we suggest skipping this step for now.
Next, provide your payment details to complete the purchase. Shortly after, you will receive an email with instructions on how to access your SiteGround account.
After logging in, click on the ‘Websites’ tab. You will find two options: Site Tools and WordPress Admin.
Site Tools is SiteGround’s hosting dashboard, where you can manage all aspects of your website, including email setup.
To access your new website, click on the ‘WordPress Admin’ button.
This will direct you to a page where you can log in to your WordPress dashboard.
Simply enter the username and password you created, then click ‘Log In.’
You are now ready to start creating an online store to sell your digital photos.
Important Note:If you are using a different WordPress hosting provider like Bluehost, Hostinger, or HostGator, check out our guide for detailed step-by-step instructions on installing WordPress.
Step 2: Configuring Your eCommerce Plugin
If you’re using SiteGround, the Easy Digital Downloads plugin is already pre-installed.
If you are using a different hosting provider, you will need to install and activate the Easy Digital Downloads plugin. For detailed instructions, please refer to our guide on installing a WordPress plugin.
After activation, navigate to Downloads » Settings in your WordPress dashboard and enter your license key in the ‘License Key’ field.
You can find this information in your account on the Easy Digital Downloads website. Once you have entered it, click the ‘Activate License’ button.
First, set your store’s location.
Even though you are selling photos online, Easy Digital Downloads will use your location to automatically fill in some fields when a visitor makes a purchase. It may also use your location to calculate sales tax.
To add your location, simply open the ‘Business Country’ dropdown menu and select where your business is based.
Next, locate the ‘Business Region’ field.
Here, you can open the dropdown and select the area where your store operates.
Once you are satisfied with the information entered, click the ‘Save Changes’ button to save your settings.
Step 3: Integrating a Payment Gateway with WordPress
To sell photos online, you need a method for processing credit card payments in WordPress. Easy Digital Downloads comes with built-in support for popular payment gateways such as Stripe, PayPal, and Amazon Payments.
💡 Pro Tip: If you prefer a different payment gateway, you can enhance your options by adding additional payment methods through Easy Digital Downloads extensions.
To integrate payment gateways into your website, simply navigate to the ‘Payments’ tab.
For accepting payments via Stripe or PayPal, click on the respective ‘Stripe’ or ‘PayPal’ tab.
Follow the on-screen instructions to configure Stripe or PayPal for your site.
Once you’re finished, click on the ‘General’ link.
In the Active Gateways section, check the boxes next to each payment gateway you wish to include in your digital product marketplace.
If you select multiple payment methods, you will need to open the ‘Default Gateway’ dropdown and choose the payment method that will be set as the default.
You can select any payment gateway you prefer, but Stripe is capable of processing credit cards as well as Google Pay and Apple Pay. Therefore, it may be beneficial to set Stripe as your default payment gateway.
After choosing one or more payment gateways, simply click the ‘Save Changes’ button.
By default, Easy Digital Downloads displays all prices in US dollars. After setting up your payment gateway, you may want to change the currency used on your website.
To display prices in a currency other than US dollars, navigate to the ‘General’ tab and then click on the ‘Currency’ link.
Next, open the ‘Currency’ dropdown menu and select your preferred currency.
Keep in mind that not all payment gateways accept every currency. If you’re unsure, check the website of your chosen payment gateway, as most provide a list of supported currencies.
Once you are satisfied with your plugin settings, click the ‘Save Changes’ button to apply your updates.
Step 4: Convert Individual Photos into Downloadable Products
After setting up at least one payment gateway, you can create your first digital product, which can be any photo or digital file you wish to sell online.
To create a digital product, simply go to Downloads and click on the ‘Add New’ button.
You can now enter a name for the product in the ‘Enter download name here’ field.
Craft an engaging title for your product page that captures visitors’ attention and accurately reflects the essence of your photo.
Next, write a detailed description for the product page. Provide potential buyers with all the necessary information to help them decide whether to purchase this photo.
Consider including details such as the image dimensions, resolution, and the technical specifications of your camera. Additionally, mention the licensing options and how customers can utilize the photo after their purchase.
Many online shops utilize product categories and tags to assist customers in finding what they seek. These categories and tags can also inspire visitors to explore similar photos, potentially leading to increased sales.
You can create new categories and tags in the Download Categories and Download Tags sections.
Next, set a price by navigating to the Download Details section.
Here, specify the amount that visitors will need to pay to download this photo.
Easy Digital Downloads also allows for variable pricing. For instance, you can offer the same photo in different resolutions or sizes.
To offer different pricing options, check the ‘Enable variable pricing’ box. This will create a new section where you can enter a name for each digital download and set its price.
To add more pricing options, simply click the ‘Add New Price’ button.
You can then enter a title and price for each option.
After adding all your options, be sure to select a default option. This will be automatically chosen when customers visit the product page.
Locate the option you wish to set as default and click its ‘Default’ button.
You are now ready to upload the image file you want to sell. WordPress supports gif, heic, jpeg, png, and webp formats for images.
💡 Pro Tip:If you want to sell photos in a file format that WordPress does not support, check our guide on how to enable additional file types in WordPress.
To begin, click on the ‘Upload a File’ icon.
You can select any image from the WordPress media library or upload a new file from your computer.
Easy Digital Downloads will automatically generate a file name, but you can customize it by entering a new name in the ‘File Name’ field.
If you have activated variable pricing, open the ‘Price Assignment’ dropdown menu.
Next, select a price from the available options.
Then, click the ‘Add New File’ button.
This will create a section where you can upload a file, enter a title, and select a price assignment.
Repeat these steps for every pricing variation you wish to offer.
After uploading your photo files, the next step is to add a product image.
When selling photos online, it’s important to protect your work from theft. Therefore, we advise against using the original photos as your product image.
Instead, consider using a lower-resolution version of the original photo or applying a watermark.
If you create a watermark using design software, ensure it is placed in a location that is difficult to crop out. Many photographers position their watermark in the center of the image or use a repeating pattern that covers the entire photo.
To add a product image, scroll to the Download Image section and click on ‘Set Download Image’.
This will open the WordPress media library, allowing you to select an image or upload a new file from your computer.
Once you’re satisfied with your digital download, click the ‘Publish’ button to make it available. You can follow these steps again to add more digital downloads to your WordPress site.
Step 5: Creating Downloadable Photo Bundles (Optional)
After uploading all your individual photos, consider creating bundled photo packs for customers to purchase.
For instance, you could compile all your food-themed images into a bundle for restaurant websites or create packs showcasing a specific workplace or location.
This approach saves your customers time, as they won’t need to sift through your entire catalog to find and purchase each desired photo.
You might also consider offering these photo bundles at a discounted rate compared to purchasing each photo separately. This strategy can lead to higher conversion rates and increased average order value.
To include multiple photos in the same bundle, create a new digital product using the same process outlined earlier. As before, you can add a title, description, categories, tags, pricing, and more.
Next, under ‘Download Details’, open the ‘Product Type Options’ dropdown and select ‘Bundle’.
This will introduce a new section for ‘Bundled Downloads’.
You can now access the dropdown menu labeled ‘Choose a Download’ by default.
In the dropdown, begin typing the name of the first photo you wish to include in the bundle. Once the photo name appears, click to select it.
After that, click on ‘Add New File’ to proceed.
You can now include a second photo in the bundle.
Simply repeat these steps to add all the photos you want to include in this bundle.
Once you are satisfied with the bundle setup, click ‘Publish’ to make it live. You can repeat these steps to create as many photo bundles as you desire.
Step 6: Personalizing Your Digital Download Emails
Whenever someone purchases a photo from your website, Easy Digital Downloads will send them an email containing a link to download their product.
Although this default email includes everything the customer needs to download their file, we recommend personalizing it with your own logo, branding, and message.
To customize the default email, simply navigate to Downloads » Settings. Then click on the ‘Emails’ tab.
You may want to start by uploading your own logo.
This branding will appear at the top of your purchase receipt emails, ensuring customers can easily identify the sender.
To upload a logo, click the ‘Attach File’ button.
You can select an image from the WordPress media library or upload a new file from your computer.
You also have the option to include a ‘From Name’.
This name will be visible in the customer’s inbox, so choose something recognizable, such as your website name, business name, or photography studio name.
Additionally, you need to provide a ‘From Email’, which will serve as both the sender and reply-to address.
Some customers may respond to the purchase receipt email, especially if they encounter issues downloading the file. Therefore, it’s important to use a professional email address that you monitor regularly.
Once you’ve made these adjustments, click on the ‘Purchase Receipts’ tab.
On this page, you can enter an email subject, add a header, and modify the body text of the email.
You can simply write the message you wish to send to every customer, but for more effective and personalized communication, consider using the Conditional Emails feature.
Conditional Emails utilize ‘template tags’ to customize your content. Each time an email is sent, Easy Digital Downloads will replace these tags with actual values, such as the customer’s name and the amount they paid for the digital download.
To view all available tags, simply scroll to the bottom of the ‘Purchase Receipts’ screen.
Once you have completed your changes, you may want to send a test email to preview how the message will appear to your customers.
To do this, just click on the ‘Send Test Email’ button, and Easy Digital Downloads will send an email to your WordPress admin email address.
If you clicked the ‘Send Test Email’ button but did not receive a test email, your WordPress site may not be configured to send emails correctly, which can be a significant issue. If customers do not receive purchase confirmation emails, they will not be able to download your photos.
With this in mind, you can follow our guide on resolving the WordPress email sending issue to ensure your emails reach your customers. Additionally, consider using WP Mail SMTP, the top SMTP plugin for WordPress.
When you are satisfied with the purchase receipt email, click the ‘Save Changes’ button.
Step 7: Testing Your Digital Download
After creating your first product with Easy Digital Downloads and customizing the purchase emails, it’s important to ensure that visitors can successfully purchase your photos.
To test your download, enable test mode on your site. This allows you to simulate the purchasing process without having to enter your credit or debit card details.
To activate test mode for your store, navigate to Downloads » Settings and click on the ‘Payments’ tab.
In the ‘Active Gateways’ section, check the box next to ‘Store Gateway’.
Then, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on ‘Save Changes’.
With test mode enabled, go to Downloads » All Downloads and hover over the product you wish to test. Click on the ‘View’ link when it appears.
This will open the product page where customers can purchase the photo or photo pack.
To conduct a test purchase, simply click the ‘Purchase’ button.
Easy Digital Downloads will add the item to your cart.
Next, click on the ‘Checkout’ button.
You can now enter your email address and name, then click on ‘Purchase’.
Since you’re in test mode, no payment information is required.
Shortly after your purchase, you will receive a confirmation email that includes a link to download your selected photo or all files from your stock photo pack.
Once you finish the test, you can take your store out of test mode and begin accepting payments from your visitors.
To do this, navigate toDownloads » Settings » Payments. Here, you can uncheck the ‘Store Gateway’ option.
Step 8: Choosing and Personalizing Your WordPress Theme
Themes determine the appearance of your WordPress website, including colors, layout, fonts, and areas for widgets. Selecting the right WordPress theme will create a positive first impression on visitors and encourage them to explore your site further.
With this in mind, it’s important to choose a design that not only looks appealing but also includes the specific features you require.
To assist you in making the best decision, we have compiled a list of the most popular WordPress themes. Our top recommendation is the Astra Theme, as it is fully compatible with Easy Digital Downloads, free of charge, and highly customizable.

Step 9: Marketing Your Digital Downloads
To successfully sell your photos, it’s essential to drive traffic to your product pages.
A great first step is to add your store link to your website’s navigation menu.
Another effective strategy is to write engaging blog posts on relevant industry topics, including links to related products that your readers might be interested in purchasing.
Build an email list to keep your subscribers informed about new photo uploads, recent blog posts, and engaging content that encourages them to visit your online store.
Regardless of your promotional strategy, it’s essential to have the correct URL for the product.
To obtain this link, simply navigate to Downloads » Downloads. Locate the product you wish to link to and click on its ‘Edit’ option.
You can find the URL in the right-hand sidebar.
You can now use this URL to link to the product page from any section of your website.
Easy Digital Downloads generates a unique ‘Purchase’ button for each photo, which you can place on any page, post, or widget-ready area.
Visitors can click this button to add the photo to their shopping cart, allowing them to initiate the purchase process from any page on your website, including landing pages, sales pages, and advertisements displayed on your WordPress blog.
You can insert this button on any page, post, or widget-ready area using a shortcode that Easy Digital Downloads automatically generates. This code can be found in the right-hand sidebar under ‘Purchase Shortcode.’
For detailed instructions on how to insert the shortcode, refer to our comprehensive guide on adding shortcodes in WordPress.
Once you have added the shortcode to your website, a new ‘Purchase’ button will appear.
