Want to organize WordPress pages with categories and tags? Learn how in our step-by-step guide. Improve site structure and user navigation today.

Many website owners wish to categorize and tag their pages just as they do for blog posts.

We’ve experienced this too. As we developed more intricate websites, we recognized the value of organizing and labeling our pages. This led us to explore WordPress for a solution.

In this comprehensive guide, we will demonstrate how to add categories and tags to your WordPress pages.

The Importance of Adding Categories and Tags to WordPress Pages

Incorporating categories and tags into your WordPress pages enhances organization and simplifies navigation for visitors seeking specific content.

For instance, if you have various sales pages for different products in your WooCommerce store, you can categorize them under a main category and even create subcategories.

You can apply the same approach to different feature pages for your applications and software. For example, OptinMonster organizes multiple feature pages under the ‘Features’ category.

Utilizing page categories and tags can also improve your search engine optimization (SEO). This practice aids search engines in navigating your content and comprehending your website’s structure, facilitating the indexing and ranking of your pages.

By default, categories and tags in WordPress are taxonomies designed for blog posts. This means they are typically only applicable to posts. However, with a few simple steps, you can extend their use to your pages as well.

In this tutorial, we will guide you on how to add categories and tags to the pages of your WordPress site.

A Simple Guide to Adding Categories and Tags to WordPress Pages

The easiest method to set up categories and tags for your WordPress pages is by using the Pages with Category and Tag plugin. This free plugin works seamlessly without requiring any additional setup.

The first step is to install and activate the plugin. For detailed instructions, please refer to our guide on installing a WordPress plugin.

After activation, navigate toPages » Add Newin the WordPress admin dashboard. You will now see that WordPress tags and post categories are available for your pages.

Next, you can create categories and tags specifically for your pages.

To add a category, go to thePages » Categoriessection in your WordPress dashboard and enter a ‘Name’ and ‘Slug’ for the category.

Next, scroll down to choose a ‘Parent Category’ for your new category.

Once you have filled in the details, click the ‘Add New Category’ button to save.

You can now see the new category you added for your pages.

To remove a specific category, check the box next to it, select ‘Delete’ from the Bulk Action dropdown, and then click the ‘Apply’ button.

Now, you can assign your WordPress pages to the categories you just created.

To begin, edit an existing page or create a new one. In the block editor, select the appropriate category from the sidebar on the right.

For example, we created a features page and assigned it to the ‘Features’ category in the right panel.

You can also add tags to your WordPress page in the ‘Tags’ field. To include multiple tags, separate them with commas.

For instance, you can include keywords and phrases that describe your content. In our example, we used ‘exit intent’ and ‘OptinMonster’ as tags.

After selecting your category and adding tags, simply update or publish your WordPress page. That’s all there is to it!
