Is Pinterest Still Relevant? Boost Your Blog Traffic with These Proven Strategies!

Despite rumors of its decline, Pinterest remains vibrant with nearly 500 million active users each month.

Pinterest serves as a visual discovery platform, allowing users to curate and share inspiring content through ‘pins’ while exploring diverse ideas from creators around the globe.

Pinterest users exhibit high engagement levels, with statistics indicating they save an impressive 1.5 billion pins weekly. They actively use the platform to solve problems, seek inspiration, and plan various projects, rather than just scrolling passively.

These factors make Pinterest an excellent resource for enhancing your blog’s visibility, driving traffic to your website, and connecting with enthusiastic users. My own research and experience managing websites validate this.

In this article, I will guide you on leveraging Pinterest to significantly increase your blog traffic.

Step 1: Create and Optimize Your Pinterest Business Profile

To effectively promote your blog on Pinterest, the first step is to create an account and optimize your profile for visibility and discoverability.

Set Up a Pinterest Business Account

When registering, be sure to choose a free Pinterest Business Account.

This account type provides essential features such as rich pins and analytics. Additionally, it allows you to increase your content’s visibility through paid advertising and promoted pins.

If you have a personal Pinterest account, you can easily upgrade it to a business account by selecting the ‘Convert to business’ option from the drop-down menu in the upper right corner of your Pinterest profile.

Enhance Your Pinterest Business Profile

Next, optimize your Pinterest profile to improve discoverability. Choose an appropriate profile name and write a concise description that informs Pinterest users about your blog.

Additionally, use a professional profile picture and header image. For brand consistency, it’s usually best to feature your business logo as your profile picture.

Claim Your Website

Lastly, claim your website. This establishes you as the owner of your blog, enhancing your credibility and increasing the visibility of your content.

This will allow you to track how often your content is shared on Pinterest. It also directs users to find more information about you, as your Pinterest profile will be linked to any pins that share content from your site.

For further details, refer to this guide on how to verify your WordPress site on Pinterest.

Here’s the Pinterest business profile of one of my clients who receives significant traffic from Pinterest.

Ensure your profile picture, header image, and name reflect your brand, accompanied by a clear and concise description of your blog. Additionally, confirm that your website is claimed.

2. Design Eye-Catching Pins on Pinterest

After setting up your Pinterest Business account and profile, you can begin adding content that promotes your blog on the platform.

Create Pinterest Boards That Reflect Your Blog’s Main Categories

Start by creating Pinterest boards to organize your content. Think of these as virtual corkboards for pinning your ideas.

I suggest creating a separate board for each of your primary blog categories, making it easier to select the appropriate board when pinning your posts.

Be sure to give your boards engaging names and select visually appealing images.

Design Pins Featuring High-Quality Images

Pins serve as visual bookmarks on Pinterest, similar to pinning an intriguing magazine article to a bulletin board. For bloggers and website owners, they represent concise content pieces that link back to your blog posts.

Pinterest is primarily a visual platform, so it’s essential to use high-quality, eye-catching images for your pins. Choose professional, bright, and visually appealing photos or graphics that align with your blog’s brand or niche.

You can create images using AI tools or graphic design software like Canva or its alternatives. If you want to add text overlays, you’ll need to utilize image editing software.

Pinterest automatically adjusts your images to fit their grid layout. I recommend using vertical images with a 2:3 aspect ratio for optimal performance, and ensure that JPG images are under 20 MB in size.

Next, you should include a title, description, and link for your pin. You can use the title and meta description from your blog post or tailor them specifically for Pinterest. Emphasize the main topic of your blog post or a key benefit to entice readers.

In the upcoming section, I will share my top tips for optimizing your pins for Pinterest SEO to enhance their visibility.

Utilize Rich Pins to automatically extract metadata from your blog posts.

Save time on content creation by utilizing rich pins for articles, recipes, and products on Pinterest. These pins automatically extract metadata directly from your website’s URL.

Rich pins enhance the visibility of your content. The additional metadata can motivate users to visit your site, resulting in increased traffic.

For instance, here’s a recipe rich pin from my client, Pinch of Yum. When you hover over the image, a button appears that directs you to the recipe on their website.

To utilize this Pinterest feature, you must add Open Graph metadata to your website, allowing Pinterest and other social media platforms to access information about your WordPress posts.

This process can be quite technical, so I recommend using All in One SEO, a well-known WordPress SEO plugin that simplifies enabling Open Graph markup with just a few settings.

If you run a cooking blog, consider using the Tasty Recipes plugin on your site to easily create recipe rich pins.

3. Enhance Your Pins and Boards for Pinterest SEO

Keep in mind that Pinterest functions as both a social media platform and a search engine. Therefore, it’s essential to focus on Pinterest SEO when designing your pins.

To enhance your visibility on Pinterest, optimize your pins similarly to how you would for search engines like Google. The objective is to have your pins rank highly in search results when users enter relevant keywords.

Here are my essential tips:

  • You’ve already conducted extensive keyword research for your blog content. Utilize these same keywords to enhance your pins and boards on Pinterest. Ensure that these keywords are included in your pin titles and descriptions.
  • I highly recommend placing your main keywords within the first couple of sentences of your pin description. This is crucial for Pinterest’s search ranking algorithms.
  • Additionally, incorporate 2-5 relevant hashtags in your pin descriptions. Pinterest hashtags function like keywords and can enhance the visibility of your pins. They also help Pinterest determine which content to recommend to users interested in similar subjects.

4. Regularly Pin and Engage with the Pinterest Community

Increasing traffic through Pinterest is a long-term effort, not a quick fix. It requires patience and consistent dedication to achieve meaningful results.

After analyzing Pinterest traffic for various blogs over several years, I’ve found that it typically takes six months or longer to start seeing results.

To achieve success on Pinterest, consistently create high-quality, engaging content and actively interact with users who show interest in your niche.

Consistently Share Your Blog Posts on Pinterest

Many people ask about the best posting frequency on Pinterest. While there’s no definitive answer, I recommend aiming for 5 to 10 pins per day as a solid starting point to maintain your visibility.

This strategy should include sharing links to your own content as well as re-pinning relevant content from other users. Distribute your pins throughout the day, and avoid pinning the same blog post more than once a week to prevent appearing spammy.

While posting 5 to 10 pins daily may seem overwhelming, many of my clients utilize tools like Tailwind, which allows them to create pins in batches and schedule them ahead of time.

You can also use the Tasty Pins plugin to easily pin your content directly from your blog.

Engage with Relevant Content from Other Users

Make it a point to regularly interact with Pinterest users who are interested in the topics related to your blog.

Engage with users who comment on your pins by thanking them for their feedback and addressing their inquiries.

Discover similar Pinterest users by searching for pins with matching keywords and tags, and interact with them by liking and commenting on their content.

Building connections with these users may motivate them to visit your profile and explore your blog.

Similar to retweeting on X (Twitter), you can repin content from other users that aligns with your brand and resonates with your audience.

This practice can enhance your credibility and establish you as a trustworthy source of information, as you’re sharing valuable content beyond just promoting your own blog.

Join Group Boards Related to Your Blog Niche

Another effective way to position yourself as an authority and collaborate with other Pinterest users is by joining or creating group boards that focus on your blog’s niche.

These collaborative boards on Pinterest can help your pins reach a broader audience interested in the subject, leading to increased traffic for your blog.

5. Optimize Your Blog Content for Pinterest to Encourage Sharing

The good news is that promoting your blog on Pinterest doesn’t have to be a solo effort. To maximize your reach, make it simple for your readers to pin your content as well.

The most effective way to achieve this is by adding a Pinterest button to your images. These buttons automatically appear when users hover their mouse over an image.

Pinterest hover buttons make it incredibly easy for users to pin your content. They just need to click the button and select the board where they want to save the post.

You can create these buttons by adding code to your website, but many users find it more convenient to use a plugin like Tasty Pins.

This plugin not only adds a Pinterest button to every image on your site but also includes a follow box that encourages visitors to follow you on Pinterest.

Additionally, Tasty Pins allows you to customize the title, description, and appearance of each pin directly from the WordPress editor, and to use image sizes that are optimized for Pinterest.

6. Monitor Your Progress Using Pinterest’s Analytics Dashboard

You can’t enhance what you don’t track.

Fortunately, business users can easily access Pinterest analytics to monitor their performance and determine what strategies are effective. This allows you to refine your approach over time to enhance your pins for optimal traffic.

By thoroughly analyzing your Pinterest analytics, you can identify which pins generate the highest impressions and clicks, as well as the best times for peak engagement.

You can leverage these insights to increase your blog traffic from Pinterest. For instance, if your most popular pins focus on a specific topic or niche, consider creating additional posts and pins centered around that theme.
