AI SEARCH VISIBILITY (GEO)
Get cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI
Canada Create runs full generative engine optimization for Canadian firms: getting your brand cited inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. Same underlying work as classic SEO, but tuned for how AI systems pick which sources to quote. Since 2008, we have watched search change three times and updated the playbook each time.

Google AI Overviews now appear on somewhere between 20% and 50% of tracked search queries depending on the measurement methodology, with BrightEdge’s commercial-vertical tracking putting the figure at roughly 48% as of early 2026, up 58% year over year. Healthcare and B2B professional service queries trigger AI Overviews at some of the highest rates of any category, north of 80% by some measurements. Whichever number you trust, the direction is not in dispute: a growing share of the searches that used to send a click to a website now resolve inside an AI-generated summary instead.
Why this changes the SEO playbook
This is not a reason to give up on SEO. It is a reason to change what “ranking” means. Analysis published by Sparkable found that 62% of Google AI Overview citations come from pages outside the organic top 10, meaning classic ranking position and AI citation are no longer the same fight. Content quality signals, specificity, and structured evidence can win an AI citation even when the page is not sitting at position one in classic search. That is genuinely good news for smaller Canadian businesses competing against larger sites with bigger link profiles, because AI citation rewards clarity and evidence over raw domain authority in a way classic ranking sometimes does not.
The same research found that adding direct quotations from named sources produced a measured 43% visibility lift, and adding statistics with inline linked sources produced a 33% lift. This lines up with what my team at Canada Create™ has observed directly. When we ran a GEO audit for a Toronto-based professional services client earlier this year, their existing content had zero citations across Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and ChatGPT for a set of 20 target queries where an AI answer appeared. After restructuring the top pages with direct-answer openings, inline statistics with source links, and FAQ sections, citation rate moved to 25% on Google AI Overviews and 85% on Perplexity within about eight weeks.
What actually drives an AI citation
Different platforms cite differently, and treating them identically is a mistake we see often. Research analyzing over 21,000 AI citations found that Google AI Overviews average around 12 citations per prompt while Perplexity averages over 16, meaning Perplexity in particular rewards breadth of sourcing. Freshness matters differently too: Perplexity’s citation behavior leans heavily toward content published or updated within the last 30 days, while Google AI Overviews tend to deprioritize content that has gone stale beyond about 90 days without a substantive update.
The practical structural checklist we apply to every GEO project:
- Open with a direct, two to three sentence answer to the page’s core question before any preamble.
- Place the strongest statistic or quotation, with an inline source link, in the first 200 to 250 words.
- Use question-format H2 and H3 headings that mirror how a person would actually ask the question.
- Add an FAQ section near the end using genuine questions, not keyword-stuffed variants.
- Confirm AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended) are not blocked in robots.txt.
- Refresh a substantive statistic or example on a 60 to 90 day cadence, and update the visible “last updated” date honestly when you do.
The honest limitation with GEO right now
Here is the trust marker worth stating plainly. GEO tactics are directionally proven but the measurement tooling is immature. Every major GEO study cited above uses a different methodology, a different query sample, and sometimes a different definition of “citation.” We tell clients this upfront: expect meaningful directional improvement, not a guaranteed ranking-style dashboard number, because no vendor including us can currently promise a precise citation percentage the way we can promise a Google Search Console ranking. Anyone selling you a GEO package with a guaranteed citation count is overselling the current state of the measurement science.
Why this belongs in the same cluster as everything else on this site
GEO is not a standalone service disconnected from the rest of what Canada Create™ builds. The same E-E-A-T signals that earn an AI citation (named authors, real credentials, structured data, honest caveats in the copy) are exactly what Google’s own Search Quality Rater Guidelines have emphasized for years, just enforced more visibly now that AI systems are reading the same signals. A site with strong schema, a named author with verifiable credentials, and genuinely useful content wins on both classic SEO and GEO simultaneously. We do not build these as two separate workstreams.
Where GEO and classic technical SEO overlap
Most of the technical SEO fundamentals that mattered before AI Overviews still matter now, arguably more. Fast page load times, clean crawlability, and proper heading hierarchy all affect whether an AI system can efficiently parse and extract your content in the first place. A page that takes six seconds to load or buries its answer under three paragraphs of preamble loses on both classic ranking and AI citation for the same underlying reason: it makes the reader (human or machine) work harder than a competitor’s page to get the answer. When we scope a GEO project, the first step is almost always a technical audit identical to what we would run for a classic SEO engagement, because fixing crawlability and page speed issues has to happen before any content restructuring will show its full effect.
How pricing works for this service
GEO work typically runs as a monthly retainer alongside existing SEO or content work, since it depends on an ongoing content refresh cadence rather than a one-time fix. Retainers for Canadian B2B clients generally run CAD $1,500 to $5,000 a month depending on the number of pages in scope and how much new content production is included.
Frequently asked
Is GEO different from SEO?
It is an extension of the same discipline, not a replacement. Pages that are well-structured, well-sourced, and genuinely useful tend to perform well on both classic search and AI citation surfaces.
How long before we see AI citations improve?
Most of our clients see measurable movement within six to ten weeks, based on the pattern we have observed across current engagements.
Which AI platforms should we prioritize: Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, or ChatGPT?
It depends on where your buyers actually search. B2B professional service buyers in Canada currently show meaningful research behavior across all three, so we generally optimize for structural fundamentals that help across all of them rather than picking one.
How does this connect to content marketing and lead generation?
GEO and AI content marketing for lead generation share the same production pipeline. Most clients build both together rather than treating GEO as an add-on.
