Our extensive experience with content management systems has shown us how a well-chosen platform can significantly enhance any online business. While Joomla has been a reliable option for many website owners in the past, WordPress has emerged as the leading choice due to its user-friendly interface and flexibility.
Transitioning from Joomla to WordPress may seem intimidating, and we understand your concerns about potential content loss, site disruptions, or business interruptions. However, the great news is that with a solid plan in place, the process of switching from Joomla to WordPress is much easier than you might expect.
In this comprehensive guide, we will outline a proven strategy for migrating from Joomla to WordPress. Drawing from our years of experience assisting others, we have streamlined the process to help you get your website operational on WordPress quickly and efficiently.
Reasons to Transition from Joomla to WordPress
You may have encountered various website building options, with Joomla and WordPress being two of the most recognized names. Both platforms offer unique features and benefits.open-source, which means they are free to use and developed by a community of contributors. They also utilize the same underlying programming language (PHP) and share similar hosting requirements.
Joomla can be more challenging to navigate, and it offers a limited selection of extensions and themes.
Conversely, WordPress is the leading website builder globally, celebrated for its user-friendly interface and extensive library of plugins and themes, allowing you to customize your website to reflect your unique style.
We have also created a comprehensive comparison between Joomla and WordPress, highlighting all the differences for easy reference.
💡 To explore why we highly recommend WordPress, check out our in-depth WordPress review or our expert comparison of WordPress.com versus WordPress.org.
When we refer to WordPress, we mean the self-hosted platform WordPress.org, which is distinct from WordPress.com.
WordPress.com is a hosted website builder that eliminates the need for you to secure your own hosting and install the software. You can select a free plan or purchase one of the available paid options, with Automattic managing your website’s hosting.
Nevertheless, WordPress.com has certain restrictions. Notably, you cannot install any of the fantastic WordPress plugins (which serve as enhancements for your site), and monetizing your content may be challenging.
We recommend using WordPress.org for all types of websites, including online stores, nonprofit organizations, and personal portfolios.
For a detailed comparison between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, check out our comprehensive guide. In summary, WordPress.org is typically the better choice.

Step 0: Getting Started
The requirements for Joomla and self-hosted WordPress are quite similar. You’ll need a domain name and a hosting account to get started with WordPress.
You likely already have a domain name and hosting account for your Joomla site, which you can also use for your WordPress site.
If you’re considering switching to a different hosting provider, we recommend Bluehost.
Bluehost is recognized as one of the leading hosting providers globally and is officially endorsed as a WordPress hosting solution.
Additionally, readers of CanadaCreate can enjoy a discount of up to 61% on Bluehost web hosting, which comes with a complimentary domain name and SSL certificate. You can start your hosting journey for as low as $1.99 per month.

Step 1: Install and Configure WordPress

Step 2: Migrate Your Joomla Website to WordPress
Now that WordPress is installed, you can transfer content from your Joomla site.
Begin by installing and activating the FG Joomla to WordPress plugin. For detailed instructions, refer to our guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.
After activation, navigate to the Tools » Import section in your WordPress dashboard. You will see a list of available import tools for your WordPress site. Click the ‘Run Importer’ link located under the Joomla (FG) importer tool.
This will initiate the Joomla (FG) importer script, prompting you to enter your Joomla website details.
First, input your Joomla website URL followed by its database settings.
You can obtain your database information from the admin area of your Joomla website.
Simply navigate to the System » Global Configuration section and select the ‘Server’ tab.
This page will display all the essential database information, including the database username, database name, and the prefix for database tables.
The only information not displayed is the database password. If you can’t recall your Joomla database password, you can locate it in the configuration.php file located in the root directory of your Joomla website.
You can access this file by connecting to your website via an FTP client and opening it with a text editor such as Notepad.
After entering your database details in the Joomla importer, click the ‘Test database connection’ button. If all information is correct, you will receive a success message.
Below, you will find additional options to customize your import, including featured images, content images, and more. If you are uncertain, it’s best to leave these options at their default settings.
Click on the ‘Start / Resume Importer’ button to proceed.
The importer will now begin retrieving content from your Joomla website. This process may take some time, depending on the volume of content you have.
Once completed, you will see a success message.
Now that you have successfully imported content to your WordPress site, the next step is to check for internal links that may still point to your old website. The Joomla FG importer will assist you with this.
Scroll down to the bottom and click on the ‘Modify Internal Links’ button.
You can now explore your new WordPress website and see the imported content in action.
Essential Steps to Take After Migrating from Joomla to WordPress
After migrating your website from Joomla to WordPress, there are several adjustments you need to make to complete the migration process and optimize your new platform.
Step 3: Configuring Redirects and Permalinks
Your previous Joomla website may have a different URL structure compared to your WordPress site. As a result, users searching for your articles may encounter a 404 error page.
To resolve this issue, you must configure permalinks and set up proper redirects to guide users and search engines to the new URLs.
First, navigate to the Settings » Permalinks section in your WordPress dashboard. In the ‘Common Settings’ area, select the ‘Post Name’ option.
Then, click the ‘Save Changes’ button.
Next, to establish redirects, you need to install and activate the Redirection plugin on your WordPress site. For detailed instructions, refer to our comprehensive guide on installing a WordPress plugin.
Once activated, go to the Tools » Redirection section.
In the ‘Source URL’ field, input your previous Joomla URL, and in the ‘Target URL’ field, enter your new WordPress URL, as illustrated in the screenshot below.
Ensure you select the ‘301 – Moved Permanently’ option, then click on the ‘Add Redirect’ button to save your changes.
WordPress will now automatically redirect the old Joomla website URL to your new WordPress permalink structure.
Repeat this process to create redirects for any additional pages or posts. Be sure to visit the old URLs to confirm they are correctly redirecting to the new URLs on your WordPress site.
For further information, refer to our guide on how to set up redirects in WordPress.
