How Does Ad Refresh Enhance Ad Impressions in WordPress?

    Method 1: Enable Ad Refresh Using Advanced Ads (Premium Plugin)

    The first approach is to utilize Advanced Ads, a user-friendly plugin that facilitates ad refresh across your website. We will focus on the premium version, as it includes the ad refresh feature.

    Step 1: Install and Set Up Advanced Ads Pro

    The first step is to install and activate the Advanced Ads plugin. For detailed instructions, refer to our comprehensive guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

    After activation, you will need to input the license key for the pro version of the plugin. To do this, go to Advanced Ads » LicensesNext, enter your license key in the ‘Pro’ section and click ‘Activate License.’

    Now, navigate to Advanced Ads » Settings and select the ‘Pro’ tab. On this page, enable the ‘Cache Busting’ feature.

    Then, check the box for ‘Force passive cache-busting.’

    Cache busting ensures that web browsers do not serve outdated cached versions of JavaScript, CSS, or image files, including ads. This setting is crucial for displaying ads accurately and relevantly to users.

    Now, simply scroll down and click ‘Save settings on this page.’

    Step 2: Configure Your Ads

    Let’s proceed to add the ads you wish to display on your WordPress site. Go to Advanced Ads » Ads. Here, you’ll find an interface to set up your first ad.

    First, give your new ad a descriptive name. Then, select one of the available ad types: plain text and code, dummy (for testing), rich content, image ad, ad group, Google Ad Manager, AdSense, or AMP.

    Note: Advanced Ads Pro does not recommend using Google AdSense for ad refresh, so we advise opting for other ad types with this plugin.

    In the Ad Parameters section, you’ll find various settings to configure your advertisement, which will differ based on the selected ad type.

    When using the image ad option, you can upload an image for the ad, adjust its size, enable tracking, add a custom link, set the link to open in a new window, include a nofollow attribute, and apply a ‘sponsored’ attribute to your advertisement.

    Further down, you’ll encounter the ‘Layout / Output’ section.

    Here, you can modify the appearance of the ad layout on your website by adjusting margins, text wrapping, alignment, and more.

    This section also provides options to personalize the ad using custom HTML and CSS.

    Moreover, you can set the ad to display only once, which helps prevent it from reloading multiple times in the same ad refresh area. This approach minimizes user annoyance and reduces ad blindness.

    The following section is Targeting, where you can specify conditions for when the ad should be displayed.

    For instance, you might want the ad to show up only when a blog post is being viewed. You can click the dropdown menu to explore the available display conditions.

    You can also define visitor conditions, which will determine the specific types of users for whom the ad should be displayed.

    Consider factors such as whether the user is logged in, the type of device they are using, their geographic location, the source of their traffic (like a search engine), or if they have seen the ad a specific number of times.

    Once you are satisfied with your ad settings, scroll up and click ‘Save Draft’ to save your progress.

    If you’re ready to launch the ad immediately, click the ‘Publish’ button.

    Continue following the same steps until you have created enough ads for your ad refresh section.

    Step 3: Create an Ad Group

    After you have set up all your ads, you can create an ad group. This feature allows you to display multiple ads from a single location.

    First, go to Advanced Ads » Groups & Rotation and click on the ‘+ New Ad Group’ button.

    Next, select the type of Ad Group you want to create. You can choose from four options: random ads (ads will display in a random order), ordered ads (customize which ads appear first), grid (ads will be shown in a grid layout), and slider (ads will be presented in a sliding format).

    For this example, we will select ‘Random ads.’

    Make sure to name your ad group and then click ‘Save New Group.’

    A popup will appear allowing you to configure the ad group settings. In the ‘Visible ads’ section, you can choose how many ads will be displayed simultaneously. We recommend keeping this number at 1.

    Next, enable the ‘Refresh Interval’ setting. This feature allows you to set a regular interval for ads to refresh, ensuring that visitors see different ads over time, which increases the chances of clicks.

    You can also specify the duration each ad is displayed before it refreshes, measured in milliseconds. The default setting is 2000 milliseconds.

    Scroll down the window and begin adding your ads one at a time.

    Simply select an ad from the dropdown menu, assign a weight to the ad, and click ‘add.’

    With the random ads feature, ad weights influence how frequently an ad is shown within the group. They do not determine the order of ads but affect the probability of each ad being displayed.

    Once you have finished, click the ‘Save [your ad group name]’ button.

    Step 4: Embed the Ad Group on Your WordPress Website

    Now that your ad group is configured, let’s add it to your WordPress blog or site. To do this, navigate to Advanced Ads » Placements and click ‘+ New Placement.’

    First, select the type of ad placement you want. There are several options available, and you can hover over each one for more information about its placement.

    You can position the ad in various locations on your website, such as the header, footer, between posts, or after specific paragraphs in your blog content.

    After making your selection, simply name your ad placement and choose the ad group you created earlier.

    Next, click on ‘Save New Placement’ to finalize your settings.

    Additionally, you can place the ad on individual pages, posts, sidebar areas, widgets, or parts of your theme template.

    To do this, navigate to Advanced Ads » Groups & Rotations. Then, click the ‘Show usage’ button.

    A popup will display the shortcode or PHP code needed to implement the ad group.

    That’s it! You can now preview your website to see how the ad group appears.

    Method 2: Activate Ad Refresh Using the Free Ad Refresh Control Plugin

    If you want to add the ad refresh feature to your current ad slots without using a new plugin, you can utilize the free Ad Refresh Control plugin.

    Please note that this plugin does not manage ads. If you haven’t set up your ads yet, you will need a separate plugin for that. Check out our list of recommended ad management plugins for WordPress.

    After you add your ad units to WordPress, you can enable the ad refresh feature for them.

    First, install and activate the Ad Refresh Control plugin. For detailed instructions, refer to our step-by-step guide on installing a WordPress plugin.

    Once the plugin is activated, go to Settings » Ad Refresh Control. Here, you will configure your ad refresh settings. These settings will be applied globally to all ad units on your site.

    The key settings for the plugin include ‘Viewability Threshold’, ‘Refresh Interval’, and ‘Maximum Refreshes’.

    The ‘Viewability Threshold’ setting determines how much of the ad must be visible to count as an impression.

    The ‘Refresh Interval’ specifies the duration an ad will be displayed before it refreshes.

    The ‘Maximum Refreshes’ option determines how many times an ad slot can be refreshed.

    You can adjust these values as needed. However, we recommend keeping the default settings, as they align with the guidelines of most ad networks.

    You can leave the final plugin settings blank. If you wish to exclude certain ad units or sizes, you can specify the ad unit sizes or IDs here.

    Once you’ve completed your adjustments, simply click the ‘Save Changes’ button.

    Your ad units will now refresh automatically for your visitors according to the settings you’ve configured.
