Unlock Your Profits: 3 Simple Strategies to Sell Audiobooks Online

Want to sell audiobooks online? Here's how to make money online by selling audiobooks or even audiobook annual memberships without any marketplace fees.

The audiobook market is thriving, but selling them on your own website can seem daunting. Concerns about secure file delivery, payment processing, and proper store setup are common.

I experienced the same challenges when I first explored selling digital audio files. Fortunately, you don’t need to be a tech expert to create a professional audiobook store.

I have evaluated the leading platforms to identify those that are beginner-friendly. In this guide, I will provide you with tools that strike the perfect balance between functionality and user-friendliness.

Here are three straightforward methods to successfully sell audiobooks online.

Why Should You Sell Audiobooks Online?

When it comes to sharing your expertise or stories online, there are numerous avenues available. You might consider creating an online course, hosting a webinar, or launching a podcast.

Have you thought about transforming that content into an audiobook? In my experience, audiobooks are an excellent way to consolidate your message into a single, downloadable file that is convenient for your audience.

Unlike traditional print books, selling audiobooks eliminates the need for printing and shipping costs. Additionally, you won’t have to manage physical storage or inventory.

This means reduced expenses and increased profits. In summary, the audiobook industry offers a fantastic opportunity to earn money online using WordPress.

Platforms like ACX simplify the process of converting an eBook into an audiobook. When you self-publish through ACX, your audiobook is distributed on Audible, Amazon, and Apple Books. However, a drawback is that you typically have to share a portion of your earnings with these services.

That’s why I suggest selling the audiobook directly from your own website. This approach gives you control over the sales process and allows you to retain a larger share of your profits.

With this in mind, let’s explore several straightforward methods for selling audiobooks directly from your website. I will guide you through each option so you can choose the one that suits you best:

  • Method 1: Selling Audiobooks Using Easy Digital Downloads (The Simplest Option)
  • Method 2: Offering Audiobook Memberships (Ideal for Recurring Income)
  • Method 3: Selling Audiobooks Through WooCommerce (Best for E-commerce Stores)

Method 1: Selling Audiobooks Using Easy Digital Downloads (The Simplest Option)

For the quickest and easiest way to sell audiobooks on your WordPress site, I highly recommend Easy Digital Downloads (EDD). This method is ideal if your primary focus is on digital products and you prefer a simple setup.

EDD is an excellent choice for authors, bloggers, or anyone who wants to avoid the hassle of physical products or complex store functionalities. It streamlines the process, allowing you to launch your store faster than most eCommerce solutions.

If you’re looking for a user-friendly option that can grow with you as you expand your digital product offerings, this is the best starting point.

Unlike general eCommerce platforms, EDD is tailored specifically for the promotion, sale, and distribution of digital products, making it easy to use.

Important Note: The free version of EDD includes all the essential features you need to sell audiobooks online. However, upgrading to a premium plan unlocks advanced features to help you scale your business, such as additional payment gateways and detailed reports.

Many of our partner brands, like OptinMonster and WPForms, utilize Easy Digital Downloads to sell our software. We trust this tool because we have experienced its effectiveness in selling digital products ourselves.

Discover our insights and experiences with the plugin in our comprehensive review of Easy Digital Downloads.

If you’re using SiteGround as your hosting provider, Easy Digital Downloads is already installed on their EDD plan, allowing you to start selling right away without any extra setup.

→ Click here to take advantage of this exclusive SiteGround offer ←

If you’re with a different hosting provider, don’t worry. You can easily install and activate the Easy Digital Downloads plugin.

Need assistance? Refer to our guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Step 1: Set Up Your Online Store

After activating the plugin, navigate toDownloads » Settingsin your WordPress dashboard.

Even though you’re selling digital products, it’s important to set your store’s location.

This allows Easy Digital Downloads to automatically fill in certain fields on the order form, enhancing the customer experience. It can also assist with tax calculations if you set tax rates manually or use a service like TaxJar.

Simply open the ‘Business Country’ dropdown and select your country.

Next, choose your region in the ‘Business Region’ field.

Remember to click the ‘Save Changes’ button to save your settings.

Step 2: Configure Your Payment Gateways

First, set up payment gateways to enable credit card transactions.

Navigate to the ‘Payments’ tab and ensure the ‘General’ section is selected.

In the ‘Active Gateways’ section, select the checkboxes for the payment gateways you wish to offer.

I prefer using Stripe, as it supports credit card payments and can also be set up to accept Apple Pay and Google Pay.

If you choose multiple gateways, be sure to designate a default one—Stripe is often a reliable choice since it accommodates various payment methods.

Next, click the ‘Save Changes’ button, and new tabs will appear for configuring each payment option.

The setup process may differ slightly for each gateway, but EDD offers helpful instructions throughout.

Step 3: Add Your Digital Product

Now it’s time to upload your audiobook. Go toDownloads » Downloadsin the left sidebar, then click the ‘Add New’ button.

Fill in the ‘Enter download name here’ field with the title of your audiobook, which will be visible to customers.

In the main content area, I recommend including a comprehensive description. This is an excellent opportunity to highlight what makes your audiobook unique and why it will be appealing to listeners.

If you are selling several audiobooks, consider organizing them in your online store with categories and tags. This will make it easier for customers to find related titles.

You can create new categories and tags in the ‘Categories’ and ‘Tags’ sections.

For detailed instructions, refer to our step-by-step guide on how to add categories and tags for WordPress pages.

Next, set the price in the ‘Download Prices’ section by entering the desired amount in the price field.

Most audiobooks typically sell for between $5 and $25, depending on their length and subject matter. Experiment to find the best pricing for your audience.

Then, upload your audiobook file. WordPress supports formats such as MP3, OGG, WAV, and m4a.

If your audiobook consists of multiple chapters, I highly recommend compressing them into a single ZIP folder before uploading. This allows your customers to download the entire book with one click, rather than downloading each chapter separately.

Refer to our guide on how to enable additional file types for more information.

Now, simply click ‘Upload a File’ and choose your file from the media library or upload a new one.

Note:Audiobook files can be quite large. If you encounter an error indicating that your file size exceeds the limit, you may need to adjust your upload settings. Refer to our guide on how to increase the maximum file upload size in WordPress.

I recommend including a short audio sample in the product description using the Audio block. Customers are more likely to purchase an audiobook if they can listen to a preview of the narrator’s voice.

Additionally, be sure to upload a cover image in the ‘Download Image’ section. An eye-catching cover can attract the attention of potential buyers.

If you don’t have a cover image yet, you can create one using graphic design tools like Canva or other similar software.

Once everything appears as it should, click the ‘Publish’ button to make your audiobook available to the public.

Step 4: Make Your Audiobook Easy to Find

Now that your audiobook is published, it’s important to ensure that visitors can easily discover it. Consider adding it to your site’s menu, featuring it on your homepage, or creating a dedicated sales page.

To obtain the link to your audiobook’s product page, navigate toDownloads » Downloadsand click ‘Edit’ next to your audiobook.

You will find the URL displayed below the title. Use this link to promote your audiobook wherever needed.

Easy Digital Downloads offers a ‘Purchase Shortcode’ for your audiobook. This shortcode is a simple code snippet that enables features like a buy button on your post or page without requiring any coding expertise.

To locate it, navigate to the ‘Download’ settings section on the edit page of your audiobook.

Copy the shortcode and insert it into any post, page, or widget area.

For detailed instructions on how to place the shortcode, refer to our guide on adding a shortcode in WordPress.

Step 5: Craft Branded Emails

Once a customer purchases your audiobook, Easy Digital Downloads automatically sends them a purchase receipt email that includes a secure download link.

I suggest personalizing this email as it’s an excellent chance to enhance your brand’s professionalism and elevate the customer experience.

To customize the email, go toDownloads » Settingsand select the ‘Emails’ tab.

In this section, you can upload your logo, change the colors, and adjust the content to fit your branding.

It’s a good idea to send a test email to verify that everything appears correctly.

Click the ‘Send Test Email’ button, and Easy Digital Downloads will send a sample to your admin email address.

Once you have configured your email settings to your satisfaction, click the ‘Save Changes’ button.

This is all you need to begin selling audiobooks online. However, Easy Digital Downloads offers many advanced features that can enhance your audiobook sales.

For additional details about Easy Digital Downloads, please refer to our guide on selling digital downloads using WordPress.

Method 2: How to Sell Audiobook Memberships for Recurring Revenue

If you possess a collection of audiobooks or plan to release new titles regularly, establishing a membership site is the optimal way to generate consistent, recurring income while fostering a loyal community around your content.

I recommend this strategy if you want to provide listeners with unlimited access to all your audiobooks for a monthly or annual fee, similar to the Netflix subscription model.

I have observed that membership models are particularly effective for authors with a backlist, course creators, or anyone aiming to continuously provide new content. If you appreciate the idea of stable income, this is an excellent choice.

Instead of selling individual audiobooks, you can offer members unlimited access to your entire collection for a recurring fee.

To create a membership site, I suggest using MemberPress, which is the top WordPress membership plugin.

At CanadaCreate, we utilized this tool to create our free video website, where we provide educational resources for WordPress enthusiasts. For more details about the tool, you can read our comprehensive review of MemberPress.

While we haven’t monetized our own membership content yet, we’ve experienced how MemberPress enables you to accept payments, create unlimited membership tiers, and control content access based on those tiers.

Here’s the exciting news: MemberPress now features a Downloads Add-on. This allows you to manage and sell downloadable files, such as audiobooks, while keeping them exclusive to your members.

Important Note: MemberPress is a premium tool, but the ‘Basic’ plan provides all the essential features you need, including the Downloads Add-on.

Now, let’s explore how you can easily start selling audiobooks using MemberPress.

Step 1: Install and Configure MemberPress

To begin, you’ll need to install and activate the MemberPress plugin. If you’re not sure how to do this, you can follow our detailed guide on installing a WordPress plugin.

Once you’ve activated the plugin, navigate toMemberPress » SettingsAccess your WordPress dashboard to configure the essential settings for your membership site.

Ensure that you complete your business information and customize any preferences to meet your specific needs.

Step 2: Set Up a Payment Gateway

Next, establish a payment gateway to facilitate payments from your members.

Go to the ‘Payments’ tab in the MemberPress settings and click on the ‘Add Payment Method’ button.

In the ‘Gateway’ dropdown, choose your preferred payment method. MemberPress supports various options, including PayPal, Stripe, and Authorize.net.

I prefer Stripe because it allows members to pay using credit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.

Next, enter the necessary credentials for your selected gateway. For Stripe, this will include your API keys. Remember to click ‘Update Options’ to save your payment settings.

Step 3: Create Your Membership Levels

Now it’s time to establish your membership levels, which are the subscription plans that grant members access to your audiobooks.

To begin, navigate toMemberPress » Membershipsand click ‘Add New Membership.’

Enter a name for your membership level, such as ‘Audiobook Monthly Pass’ for a recurring monthly fee or ‘Premium Audiobook Access’ for a one-time higher fee.

In the editor, provide a brief description of the benefits members will receive with this plan. This will help potential customers see the value in signing up.

In the ‘Membership Terms’ section, set the membership price. You’ll also need to select the ‘Billing Type’ – whether it’s a one-time payment or a recurring fee.

If you choose a recurring payment, set the ‘Interval,’ such as monthly or yearly. For instance, you might charge $5.00 per month for unlimited access to all audiobooks.

You can specify an ‘Expiration’ date if necessary, but for ongoing memberships, you may leave this field blank.

In the ‘Membership Options’ section below, you can personalize permissions and welcome messages for your members.

Once you are satisfied with the setup, click the ‘Publish’ button. Repeat these steps to create additional membership levels if desired.

Step 4: Install the MemberPress Downloads Add-on and Upload Your Audiobooks.

To effectively manage and secure your audiobook files, utilize the MemberPress Downloads Add-on.

This feature allows you to effortlessly upload and manage your audiobooks, ensuring that only authorized members can download them.

To activate this feature, navigate to MemberPress » Add-ons, locate the ‘Downloads’ Add-on, and click the ‘Install Add-on’ button.

The Add-on will be automatically enabled after installation.

Once the Downloads Add-on is installed, you can begin uploading your audiobooks. Go to MP Downloads » Files and click ‘Add New File’ to create a new downloadable item.

On the following screen, you can enter a title for your audiobook. At the bottom, there is also an option to add a description.

Next, click the ‘Select File’ button to upload your audiobook file. If your audiobook consists of multiple chapters, you can upload several files.

You can also utilize categories and tags to categorize your audiobooks, making it simpler for members to find what they need.

Alternatively, if you wish to limit access to certain files for paying members, you can assign a ‘premium’ tag to easily identify those items.

This level of organization can improve the user experience and motivate members to explore more of your offerings.

Once you have completed the setup, click the ‘Publish’ button to make your audiobook available on your website’s backend. However, it will not be accessible to members until we establish the appropriate access rules.

Step 5: Create an Audiobook Page

To enable paying members to download your audiobooks, your membership site must include a dedicated page for access.

For instance, you can create a page titled ‘My Audiobooks’ that showcases a list of your audiobooks. In the following section, you will configure access rules to ensure that only subscribed members can download files from this page.

Refer to our guide on creating a custom page in WordPress for comprehensive instructions.

After entering the page title and a brief description of its purpose, click the ‘+‘ button and insert a Shortcode block. Then, paste the following code into the block:

[mpdl-file-links]

Alternatively, you can display all downloads within a specific file category using the shortcode [mpdl-file-links category="your-category-slug"].

Alternatively, you can show downloads associated with a specific tag using this shortcode: [mpdl-file-links tag="your-tag-slug"].

You can also choose to display the file description alongside the filename by adding show_description="true" at the end of the shortcode, like this:

For comprehensive instructions, refer to our beginner’s guide on adding a shortcode in WordPress.

Here’s an example of a simple audiobooks page that your members might see.

Your members can download an audiobook by clicking on its title. If you upload additional audiobooks in the future, they will automatically be added to this page.

After creating the download page for your audiobooks, you’re ready to establish access rules.

Step 6: Establish Access Rules to Secure Your Audiobooks

Access rules enable you to control who can access your audiobooks based on the user’s membership plan.

To begin, navigate to MemberPress » Rules in your dashboard and click the ‘Add New Rule’ button.

In the ‘Protected Content’ section, you can select the type of content to restrict.

For instance, if you want to protect all files uploaded to MP Downloads, simply choose ‘All Files’ from the drop-down menu.

Alternatively, if you wish to protect audiobooks with a specific tag, select ‘Files with File Tag’ from the drop-down menu and enter the specific tag (for example, ‘premium’) in the next field.

Next, review the ‘Access Conditions’ section.

Select the membership level that grants access to this content. If multiple membership levels should have access to the files, click the ‘+’ button to add a new membership level.

Don’t forget to click the ‘Save Rule’ button in the top right corner of the page to save and activate your settings.

This ensures that only paying members can view the page and download your audiobooks. When non-members attempt to access the link, they will receive a message prompting them to join before downloading the files.

If you prefer that non-members cannot view or access the download page at all, create a new rule by selecting ‘Single Page’ from the drop-down menu.

In the next field, begin typing the name of your downloads page and select it from the suggestions.

Once you have completed this, click the ‘Save Rule’ button in the top right corner of the page to finalize your settings. Now, only authorized members will have access to the protected audiobook download page.

Step 7: Integrate Membership Forms into WordPress

With your exclusive memberships established and content secured, the next step is to provide visitors with a straightforward method to register for a membership and allow current members to log in.

MemberPress automatically generates registration pages for each membership tier. I suggest including these in your navigation menu.

This provides easy access to your membership sign-up pages, ensuring a seamless experience for potential members looking to join.

The method for adding these links varies based on whether you are using a classic theme or a block theme.

For instance, in a classic theme, navigate toAppearance » Menus. In the ‘Add menu items’ section, select ‘Memberships.’

If the MemberPress plugin is functioning properly, you will see the registration pages for your membership tiers listed.

Tick the boxes next to the registration pages you wish to include in your menu, then click the ‘Add to Menu’ button.

You can arrange the items as desired and then click the ‘Save Menu’ button.

Now, when visitors click on that new menu link on your site, they will be directed to the clean and user-friendly registration page created by MemberPress for that membership tier.

This is where new users can complete their registration. It will appear similar to this:

The process for adding a navigation menu varies slightly for block themes. Our beginner’s guide provides detailed instructions on how to do this in WordPress.

You can enhance your site by adding a login widget that enables members to sign in from any page.

For classic themes, you can include the ‘MemberPress Login’ widget from theAppearance » Widgetssection.

To discover more, check out our guide on adding and using widgets in WordPress.

For block themes, you can insert the ‘Membership Login’ block from theAppearance » Editorsection.

We provide a step-by-step tutorial in our beginner’s guide to WordPress full site editing.

That’s all you need to do to establish your audiobook membership site with MemberPress. You’re now prepared to offer recurring subscriptions, cultivate a loyal community, and generate consistent income.

Method 3: Selling Audiobooks Using WooCommerce (Ideal for Online Stores)

Are you already operating an online store with WooCommerce? Or perhaps you wish to sell audiobooks alongside physical books, merchandise, or other products.

I highly recommend WooCommerce for anyone looking to create a comprehensive online store that sells both digital and physical products.

This approach is ideal if you’re interested in utilizing advanced store features such as coupons, product bundles, customer reviews, or integrations with shipping and fulfillment services.

Before adding your audiobook, ensure that WooCommerce is properly configured to manage digital products. I’ll guide you through the necessary settings.

Step 1: Configuring WooCommerce for Digital Products

To begin selling audiobooks, you’ll need to set up WooCommerce to support digital downloads.

To get started, navigate toWooCommerce » Settingsin your WordPress dashboard, then click on the ‘Products’ tab. From there, select ‘Downloadable products.’

In the ‘File download method’ dropdown menu, I suggest selecting ‘Force downloads.’

This setting ensures that your audiobooks are securely delivered to customers without revealing direct file links, helping to prevent unauthorized sharing and safeguarding your hard work.

However, if your audiobook file exceeds 100MB, choosing ‘Force downloads’ may lead to download timeouts or failures on some servers.

The ‘Force downloads’ method retrieves the file through your server. For audiobook files exceeding 100MB, especially on shared hosting, this can lead to timeouts.

If customers are experiencing difficulties downloading large audiobook files, you may need to implement a more robust download solution.

In this scenario, consider utilizing cloud storage or a Content Delivery Network (CDN). A CDN distributes your audiobook files across servers worldwide, enabling users to download them more quickly and reliably.

Some hosting providers offer integration with CDNs or optimized file delivery systems, which can enhance the speed and reliability of large audiobook downloads.

If you’re uncertain, don’t hesitate to contact your hosting provider’s support team for assistance.

You may also want to enable the ‘Allow using redirect mode (insecure) as a last resort’ option.

Although this approach is less secure, it can serve as a practical backup to prevent customer frustration if other methods do not work.

Step 2: Setting Up Access Restrictions

Next, think about whether you want customers to log in before they can download the audiobook.

Requiring customers to log in can help you gather valuable data and generate leads, but it may also complicate the buying process. Allowing guest checkout can boost sales, so consider the advantages and disadvantages for your online store.

To make this choice, simply enable or disable the ‘Downloads require login’ option.

By default, WooCommerce allows customers to access downloadable products immediately after their payment is confirmed.

If you prefer to manually approve orders or wait until payment is fully processed, you can uncheck the ‘Grant access to downloadable products after payment’ option.

This way, customers will receive their download link only after the order status is updated to Completed.

You can also choose how the file will be delivered to customers. If you want the audiobook to open directly in the browser (which is great for short samples or previews), check the ‘Open downloadable files in the browser’ option.

Otherwise, the file will be downloaded directly to the customer’s device. This option is perfect for full-length audiobooks.

Remember to click ‘Save Changes’ after you finish adjusting these settings.

Step 3: Adding Your Audiobook to WooCommerce

Now it’s time to list your audiobook as a product. Go toProducts » Add New.

Begin by creating an appealing title and a comprehensive description that emphasizes the unique features of your audiobook.

I suggest including details that resonate with your target audience, as this can enhance their likelihood of making a purchase.

Pro Tip: You can incorporate an Audio block in the description section and upload a 2-minute sample of your audiobook. This allows potential buyers to assess the audio quality before purchasing.

In the ‘Product Data’ section, ensure that both the ‘Virtual’ and ‘Downloadable’ options are checked.

This informs WooCommerce that the product does not require shipping and includes a downloadable file for customers.

Under the ‘General’ tab, specify your standard price.

Audiobooks generally range from $5 to $25, depending on their duration and topic.

Next, in the ‘Downloadable files’ section, click the ‘Add File’ button. You can upload your audiobook file or choose it from your media library.

Make sure to assign a clear name to the file so customers understand what they are downloading.

If you wish to restrict the number of times a customer can download the audiobook, you can enter a limit in the ‘Download limit’ field.

You can set a ‘Download Expiry’ by specifying the number of days before the download link becomes inactive.

I suggest keeping these fields empty to allow unlimited downloads without an expiration date. This enhances the customer experience, as they won’t have to worry about losing the file or needing to download it again on a new device later.

Including an eye-catching product image, such as your audiobook’s cover art, can help draw more attention. I prefer using high-resolution images to ensure my products stand out.

After you have entered all the necessary information, simply click the ‘Publish’ button to make your audiobook available in your store.

Customers can now discover your audiobook, add it to their shopping cart, and purchase it just like any other item. Once they complete their transaction, they will receive a secure download link based on the settings you specified.

Frequently Asked Questions About Selling Audiobooks

We frequently receive inquiries from users eager to sell audio content but uncertain about the technical aspects. Here are answers to some of the most common questions regarding selling audiobooks online.

1. What is the ideal file format for audiobooks?

MP3 is the ideal format for selling audiobooks on your website. It works seamlessly on nearly all devices, including iPhones, Android smartphones, and tablets. While some platforms prefer M4B files, MP3 is the universal standard that guarantees your customers can enjoy their audiobooks without any issues.

2. Is an ISBN necessary to sell audiobooks on my website?

No, you do not need an ISBN to sell audiobooks directly from your WordPress site. ISBNs are generally required by major retailers like Amazon or for library distribution. Selling directly gives you complete control, allowing you to avoid the hassle and expense of obtaining an ISBN.

3. How can I prevent unauthorized sharing of my audiobook files?

While it’s challenging to eliminate piracy entirely, the tools outlined in this guide can help safeguard your work. Easy Digital Downloads and WooCommerce offer secure, expiring links, which means customers cannot simply copy the download link and share it on forums for others to access.

4. Where is the best place to host my audiobook files?

Audiobook files can be quite large. If your hosting plan has limited storage, it may slow down your website. We recommend choosing a WordPress hosting provider that offers ample storage or integrating your store with an external storage service like Amazon S3 or Dropbox.

Both Easy Digital Downloads and WooCommerce enable you to specify an external URL for the file download location, eliminating the need to upload the file directly to WordPress.

Can I sell physical books and audiobooks together?

Absolutely. If you wish to sell physical copies alongside your audiobooks, using WooCommerce is the optimal solution. It allows you to handle shipping for physical products and digital file delivery all within a single shopping cart.
