The Importance of Targeting Global Audiences with International SEO

International SEO involves optimizing your website to attract visitors from various countries and language backgrounds. This process helps search engines display your content to the appropriate audience based on their location and language preferences.

As the leader of one of the largest WordPress SEO plugins available, I serve customers from around the globe.

To attract these customers, my team ensures that All in One SEO is easily translatable into over 50 languages and continues to grow.

This is just one approach to gaining more global customers, and there are many strategies that other businesses can implement.

Here are some advantages of targeting global audiences:

  • Increased Traffic:Visitors from anywhere in the world can access your website. Why limit your reach? Expanding internationally can significantly increase your audience size.
  • Understanding Diverse Customer Needs:It’s not only about attracting visitors. It’s essential to comprehend the varying needs and desires of different audiences. This insight can help you customize your content and marketing strategies to enhance user conversion.
  • Enhancing Engagement:When you communicate in someone’s native language and understand their culture, they are more inclined to engage with you. This leads to increased shares, higher sales, and valuable feedback.
  • Stay ahead of your competition:Many businesses have yet to fully leverage international SEO. Start implementing it now, and you’ll gain a significant advantage.

How to Effectively Target Users in Different Regions Through International SEO

Throughout my years in the SEO industry, I’ve discovered that small adjustments to your SEO strategy can yield substantial and impactful results.

A common misconception about providing localized experiences is that it demands excessive time and resources.

My experience tells a different story.

While international SEO does require some effort, it is relatively straightforward, and the rewards make it worthwhile.

1. Identify the Regions You Want to Target

Not every business or website aims for an international audience.

However, for many websites, a significant portion of visitors comes from overseas, even if you are not actively targeting any specific region.

This doesn’t mean you need to offer your website in every language. Instead, you can identify and focus on the languages and regions that present the easiest opportunities.

Google Analytics is an excellent tool for monitoring your website traffic. It provides insights into who your visitors are, their locations, and their interests.

Many users have experienced challenges in locating the reports they need within Google Analytics.

I recommend using MonsterInsights, the top Google Analytics plugin for WordPress. Check out CanadaCreate’s comprehensive review of MonsterInsights for more information.

I prefer MonsterInsights because it simplifies Google Analytics. You can access all your essential reports directly from the WordPress dashboard.

For example, you can view the ‘Top 10 Countries’ report that reveals where your visitors are coming from.

In the example screenshot, you can easily identify countries where the primary language differs from that of your website.

You can also identify countries where users may speak the same language but have regional variations, such as different currencies and cultural or geographical nuances.

Engaging these customers by offering a more localized experience can increase user engagement and revenue from these areas.

2. Translating Websites into Local Languages

Once you identify the regions you wish to target, translating your website into local languages is the most effective way to enhance the user experience.

Just ten years ago, building multilingual websites was quite challenging. Today, however, you have access to excellent tools and resources that simplify the process.

The simplest method to provide multilingual content in WordPress is by utilizing a translation plugin like Weglot.

Weglot is one of the top translation plugins for WordPress, enabling you to effortlessly create a multilingual website.

It harnesses advanced machine learning technology from leading language models such as Microsoft, Google, and DeepL to automatically translate your entire site, including pages, posts, image alt text, metadata, and more.

You can also request translations directly from the Weglot dashboard, allowing professional editors to review and refine your site. The cost is reasonable, and the quality of human translations is generally very high.

Weglot supports over 110 languages and includes features such as user-friendly editing controls, multilingual SEO, visitor language redirection, a language switcher, and more.

For further information, check out the comprehensive Weglot review on CanadaCreate, which thoroughly explores all the features of the plugin.

What Content Should You Translate?

The next important question is whether to translate only a few key pages or your entire website.

From an SEO perspective, here’s my take:

Translating only a few pages means you’ll miss valuable ranking opportunities in other languages. A greater number of translated pages increases your chances of improving your search engine rankings.

Keep in mind that internal linking plays a crucial role in SEO. To optimize this on a multilingual site, you need sufficient translated content to establish meaningful links between pages.

Therefore, my recommendation is to opt for a complete site translation. This will enhance your SEO and improve user experience, which search engines favor.

3. Select Your URL Structure

When providing different versions of your website for various regions, your WordPress translation plugin will prompt you to choose a URL structure.

You can select from the following URL structures:

  • Subdomain URL Structure(Example: https://en-uk.yourwebsite.com). The drawback of this method is that search engines view subdomains as separate websites, meaning your root domain won’t benefit from this structure.
  • Subdirectory URL StructureFor example, using a URL structure like https://yourwebsite.com/en-uk/ leverages the authority of your root domain, which can positively impact your search rankings.
  • Country-specific domain namesFor instance, https://yourwebsite.co.uk. This approach requires you to register a unique domain for each country you wish to target. The benefit is that achieving high rankings in a specific country is generally easier with a local domain. However, the drawback is that each domain is treated as a separate website, which provides minimal benefit to your primary domain.
  • Language parameter in the URLFor example, https://yourwebsite.com/?lang=en-gb. This method is not advisable as it complicates URL management and makes it unclear for users that they are viewing a version of the page targeted to a specific region.

In my view, using a subdirectory URL structure delivers the greatest SEO advantages for small businesses. It is also simpler to manage and allows for easier setup of redirects.

4. Conducting Keyword Research

Keyword research is a strategy employed by SEO professionals and marketers to identify the search terms that their target audience is using.

This is also applicable to international SEO.

For example, while your website may rank for ‘Sneakers’ in the United States, customers in the UK might search for ‘Trainers,’ and in Canada, they could be looking for ‘Runners.’

This is evident on the Nike website, which features highly optimized pages for ‘Trainers’ on the Nike U.K. store, ‘Sneakers’ on the Nike U.S. store, and ‘Shoes’ on Nike India.

During your keyword research, you can choose specific countries to discover their search volume.

I recommend using SEOBoost for keyword research, as it is a comprehensive tool for both on-page SEO and keyword analysis.

Simply input your primary keyword and select the target region.

It will provide a detailed analysis of search rankings, content evaluation, and strategies to surpass your competitors.

5. Optimizing Pages for Multi-Regional SEO

I have observed many businesses successfully outperforming their competitors through effective on-page optimization.

This becomes crucial when you offer multilingual content aimed at various regions.

This is where your WordPress SEO plugin proves to be invaluable.

You will need an SEO plugin like All in One SEO, which assists you in optimizing each page with unique SEO titles and descriptions.

In addition to the content on your pages, posts, or products, it’s crucial to focus on your SEO settings.

Depending on the translation plugin you use, you can modify the SEO settings within the translation editor. For instance, the WPML translation editor highlights the AIOSEO settings.

Make sure to optimize each page for the specific focus keyword you selected for that region.

Essentially, you’ll follow the same steps to enhance your blog posts for SEO, but tailored to a different locale and region.

Submit Multilingual Sitemaps

After translating your content into various languages, it’s important to inform search engines about the new translated content.

The most effective way to do this is by using XML sitemaps. These files provide search engines with a comprehensive overview of all the content on your website, facilitating easier crawling and ranking of your posts and pages.

If you’re utilizing All in One SEO for WordPress, navigate to the AIOSEO » Sitemaps section to set up your sitemaps.

All in One SEO enhances the standard WordPress XML sitemaps with advanced features. It automatically incorporates all your translated content into your sitemaps and supports RSS, video, news, and HTML sitemaps.

Next, submit your sitemap to Google Search Console to enhance your site’s visibility.

Develop Multilingual Landing Pages and Homepages

Many businesses tend to neglect their landing and home pages when focusing on regional user experience.

Incorporating cultural references and region-specific content can boost your conversion rates. Ignoring these aspects may result in less effective landing and home pages for different regions, making it harder to convert visitors into customers.

I suggest using a page builder like SeedProd. It’s a user-friendly WordPress page builder that features an easy drag-and-drop design interface.

This allows you to effortlessly create duplicate landing pages and translate them. You can also design distinct home pages tailored for various regions.

Overall, this method significantly streamlines the process while maintaining high conversion rates.

6. Redirecting Users to Region-Specific Content

From my experience, a tailored user experience greatly enhances conversions. Therefore, you might consider automatically directing users to content designed for their specific region and language.

That is not advisable!

Search engines like Google advise against using automatic redirects for translated versions of your website based on users’ IP addresses or cookies.

Automatic redirects can hinder search bots from indexing all versions of your site and may prevent users from accessing the content they initially discovered.

A more effective approach is to implement a language or region switcher for your multilingual and multi-regional content. This feature informs users that content is available in their preferred language or region and allows them to switch easily.

Important Note:All leading WordPress translation plugins include language switchers.

What About Manual Redirects?

In certain situations, you may need to create manual redirects, such as when changing your URL structure from a subdomain to a directory format.

These manual redirects are essential to avoid 404 errors resulting from the old URL structure.

You can utilize the All in One SEO redirection manager to set up these redirects, which allows you to create site redirects and use REGEX for efficiency.

Alternatively, the free Redirection plugin can be used to establish redirects. For guidance, refer to instructions on setting up redirects in WordPress.

7. Inform Google About Your Various Content Versions

Google effectively identifies content in various languages and presents it to users in those specific regions. However, it’s advisable to explicitly inform search engines about the language or region of your content.

You can achieve this by using the hreflang HTML tag. Most WordPress translation plugins will automatically include this tag in your site’s header. It appears as a small snippet like this:

Why Is This Important?

Imagine you have three versions of a page, all in English, but each displays prices in different regional currencies.

The content on these pages may seem very similar to search engines, which could lead to them being flagged as duplicate content.

By incorporating the hreflang tag into your HTML code, you inform search engines about the various versions of the page, helping to prevent duplicate content issues.
