Product bundles work well because they make shopping easier for your customers. Instead of having to decide which items to buy individually, they can get everything in one convenient package, often at a better price.

In this guide, we’ll show you exactly how to bundle products in WooCommerce, step by step. Whether you’re new to bundles or looking to optimize your existing offers, we’ve got you covered.

Do Product Bundles Increase Sales?

Looking to boost sales in your WooCommerce store? Product bundles might be exactly what you need. This simple strategy combines multiple products into a single purchase at a discounted price.

Don’t just take our word for it, though.

One study shows that the right discount percentage can hugely impact your bundle sales. While a small discount might not be enough to convince shoppers, a more significant price reduction can make the bundle the clear choice for your customers.

At that higher discount level, customers strongly prefer buying the bundle instead of separate items. It makes perfect sense – who doesn’t love getting more value for their money?

But there’s more to successful bundling than just picking a discount percentage. The number of products in your bundle plays an important role, too.

Smaller bundles are often more effective for higher-priced items.

For products with lower prices, larger bundles usually lead to a greater average order value (AOV).

    However, be aware that the free version has certain restrictions. For instance, adding variable products to bundles or defining precise purchase amounts for your bundled products won’t be possible.

    If you choose to upgrade to the premium version, you can buy the plugin directly from the YITH website for $89.99 annually. After buying, access the ‘Licenses & Downloads’ area after logging into your YITH account.

    Find the ‘Download Plugin’ button to acquire your copy. Leave this tab accessible, as you will require the license key displayed here for later activation.

    Next, you need to open up your WordPress admin dashboard and install the WordPress plugin as usual.

    Once the plugin is active, you’ll see an onboarding wizard. Here, enter the email address you used for your YITH purchase and paste your license key in the relevant field.

    Click ‘Activate License,’ and you’ll see a success message confirming the activation.

    After installation, select ‘Go to plugin dashboard’ to proceed.

    Step 2: Create a WooCommerce Product Bundle

    Now, let’s get to the exciting part: creating your first product bundle in WooCommerce.

    To speed things up, consider importing your WooCommerce products in bulk.

    When ready, navigate toProducts » Add Newin your WordPress dashboard. Provide a compelling product name and description for your bundle, as you would for any product.

    Next, scroll down to the ‘Product data’ section.

    From the dropdown menu, choose ‘Product Bundle’.

    Then, in the left-hand menu, select the ‘Bundle Options’ tab.

    Click the ‘Add product to the bundle’ button to begin constructing your bundle.

    Once you’ve selected all products, close the popup.

    Now, let’s customize each bundled product.

    For variable products, you can filter which variations to include. For example, if you’re bundling a t-shirt, this setting lets you decide if customers can choose their size and color right from the bundle page.

    Alternatively, leave this field empty to make all options available.

    You can set default variants, too.

    You can bypass this step if it’s not needed.

    Afterward, adjust the settings related to the product’s name and description.

    You can either use the default product details, create a custom product name and description, or hide them altogether.

    For the product name, sticking with the default is generally recommended for consistency and easier identification for customers.

    However, hiding the product description can help declutter the product page.

    The subsequent setting allows hiding product images, but it’s advisable to keep them visible, so customers clearly see the bundle’s contents.

    At this stage, you can also implement discounts on individual items. These discounts apply only if you choosePer-Item Pricing(where each product keeps its original price) instead ofFixed Bundle Pricing(a single price for the whole bundle) further down the line.

    For example, with Per-Item Pricing:

    • You might discount Product A by 15% off its standard price.
    • Product B at 20% off
    • Product C at 10% off

    The total bundle price is then automatically figured out based on the itemized discounts.

    If you plan to use this method, enable the ‘Apply a discount’ option and input the discount percentage you want.

    You can also assign specific quantity limits to products within the bundle, especially helpful if certain item’s stock is limited.

    Beyond that, you can define a product as optional, enabling users to choose whether to include it in the bundle, or you can hide the product from view within the bundle.

    Remember to repeat these customization steps for each item in your bundle.

    Now, navigate to the ‘Bundle Options’ section to define your preferred pricing approach.

    Selecting ‘Set a fixed price for this bundle’ allows you to assign a single, predetermined price for the entire bundle, irrespective of the prices of the individual products. Let’s refer to this asFixed Bundle Pricing.

    This option is suitable when you aim to present a straightforward and easily understandable price for your bundle, such as ‘$120 for the complete set.’

    When using this option, you have the ability to specify both a ‘Regular price’ and a ‘Sale price.’ This can create the perception that the bundle offers greater savings compared to purchasing each item separately.

    Activating the ‘Show saving amount’ setting can further emphasize the value of the bundle.

    For instance, if the combined regular price is $80 and the sale price is $60, a ‘Save $20’ label will be displayed. As shown in the image below, this can make the offer more appealing to potential buyers.

    Conversely, the ‘Use prices of bundled items’ option calculates the total bundle price by summing the prices of the individual products, including any discounts applied to them.

    This represents the Per-Item Pricing we discussed earlier.

    This approach is beneficial if you want customers to observe the price dynamically changing as they customize their bundle. However, it might make the final price appear less direct.

    For example, if your bundle includes a shirt priced at $30 with a 15% discount and pants priced at $40 with a 20% discount, customers will see these individual discounted prices, and the total will adjust automatically.

    This is particularly advantageous for:

    • Flexible bundles where customers can choose optional items
    • Product bundles are useful when you wish to emphasize discounts on individual products.
    • This is helpful when customers want detailed savings breakdowns for each item.

    Deciding on the Appropriate Pricing Structure

    • Use Fixed Bundle Pricing if you have pre-selected kits or packages and want to offer a straightforward, single price point. For instance, a “Beginner’s Photography Kit” including a camera, lens, and bag sold for a fixed $500.
    • Use Per-Item Pricing when you offer customizable bundles or ‘build-your-own’ options. This works well when you provide customer flexibility and want the price to adjust as they add or remove items.

    Next, navigate to the ‘Bundle Shipping’ area and select whether to ship the products separately or together.

    Individual shipping means each product carries its own shipping cost, whereas unique shipping applies one overall fee.

    Finally, consider activating the ‘Limit product selection for this bundle’ option. This works ideally for flexible bundles where customers choose items within certain limitations.

    For example, you might offer a ‘Build Your Own Gift Box’ where shoppers pick a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 items from your gourmet snack options; this setup is well-suited for subscription boxes.

    After configuring the settings, add final details like product tags, categories, and a captivating product image gallery.

    Although you’ve assembled your initial product bundle, save it as a draft first. This enables configuration of essential settings without data loss. You’ll return to finalize and publish it later.

    Click the ‘Save Draft’ button located at the screen’s upper right.

    Step 3: Configure Product Bundle Settings

    Now, let’s adjust some crucial settings that influence how your bundles function and appear to shoppers in your WooCommerce store.

    Navigate to YITH » Product Bundles and choose the ‘General Settings’ tab. The first notable setting addresses what happens when bundled products are out of stock.

    You have three options for managing out-of-stock items: conceal the entire bundle, designate the bundle as unavailable, or display the bundle but prevent purchases.

    The default setting, showing the bundle without enabling purchases, is generally advisable. This allows customers to view the bundle’s contents, even with some items unavailable, potentially informing future purchases.

    Following that, you’ll see the PhotoSwipe setting related to the bundled images.

    Activating this feature allows customers to view product images from the bundle in a full-screen lightbox gallery when clicked.

    The WooCommerce Cart & Checkout display settings come next.

    By default, both the bundle and its individual products appear on these pages. However, you can simplify the display by enabling ‘Hide bundled items in cart and checkout’ to show the bundle as a single product.

    You can also choose to display individual product prices within the bundle on your cart and checkout pages. This setting is especially helpful if you chose Per-Item Pricing earlier (where each product has its own discount) because it lets customers see the price breakdown of their bundle.

    For Fixed Bundle Pricing, you might want to keep this disabled to maintain a cleaner checkout experience.

    Now, you’ll need to decide how prices appear in the Order details page and Reports page in the admin area.

    You can select ‘Price of bundle,’ which will show the eCommerce price of the bundle as a whole. Or, you can choose ‘Price of bundled items’ to display the prices of each item in the bundle.

    By default, product bundles appear as a single item in your WooCommerce Reports page. If you enable ‘Show bundled items in WooCommerce Reports,’ you’ll see both the bundle and its individual products.

    Toward the bottom, you will see a button to sync prices for bundle products. This is a maintenance tool for older versions of the plugin and is not something you need to use.

    You can safely ignore this button and click ‘Save Options’ to store your changes.

    Step 4: Customize the Bundled Product’s Style and Labels

    Now that you have the basic settings in place, you can make your product bundles look and feel exactly right for your WooCommerce store pages.

    Switch to the ‘Customization’ tab to begin.

    First, you’ll see the ‘Bundle Price Style’ option, which controls how bundle prices appear on your shop pages. This setting becomes especially important if you plan to offer per-item discounts instead of fixed bundle pricing.

    There are four choices for showing bundle prices:

    • Min – max:This presents the full price range (e.g., “$100 – $150”).
    • Min only:This displays the lowest price point.
    • Min only higher than: Presents pricing in a “From $100” format.
    • Regular and discounted:This shows both the original and discounted prices, with the original price crossed out.

    After selecting a layout, you can change the labels on your product pages. The ‘Bundles’ title’ setting allows you to insert a heading above the list of bundled items.

    Many store owners use this to add engaging text.

    Common examples are: ‘What’s Included’ or ‘Bundle Contents.’ But you can leave it blank if you prefer.

    You can also personalize the ‘Add to cart’ button text to make it more compelling. Some effective examples we’ve seen include ‘Get the Bundle’ or ‘Claim Your Bundle.’

    For optional items in your bundles, you can customize two more labels. The ‘Add item to bundle’ text appears next to optional items.

    Meanwhile, ‘Add item to bundle for…’ shows up when you’re using Per-Item Pricing (where each product has its own price and discount). Here, you can use the ‘%s’ placeholder to automatically display the price.

    For example, entering ‘Add to bundle for %s’ will show customers ‘Add to bundle for $19.99’ next to each optional item, clearly indicating the cost of each addition.

    Click ‘Save Options’ after customizing these settings to fit your store’s brand.

    Step 5: Publish Your Product Bundle

    Now that we’ve configured all the necessary settings and customized how your bundle will look to customers, we can go ahead and make it live in your store.

    So, find the product bundle you saved as a draft earlier, and click on the ‘Publish’ button at the top right of your screen.
